I think they're both good, but if you're trying to get someone who's not into anime, into anime... Mushoku Tensei might not be a great starting point. Remember, these aren't Garnt's favorites in each genre, they're the anime that has the most appeal (which ends up just being the most popular, non-anime-BS-having show in that category cause those usually have the most fans for a reason).

good work on him recommending hathaway tbh. It's the best in the UC timeline to recommend to normies, and i've held this belief since i first saw the film. It's what's gotten me to dive into the whole UC timeline after all. There are better stories in the timeline for sure, but as a standalone film it really works well, from pacing to production it's really something i can play on the telly while having a beer with my normie mates and I wouldnt be anxious whether theyre going to like it or not because im sure they will.

A Silent Voice is an excellent movie. It is such an excellent movie that I find it hard to convince people to read the manga, which believe it or not, is even better. Not because Kyoto did a bad job in any way, but because they had the thankless job of adapting 64 chapters into a two hour long movie, and they pulled it off far better than I could have imagined. But I would still suggest people who are into reading manga to give this one a go, even though you have watched the movie.
@AzA609
@AzA609 5 ай бұрын
A Silent Voice is not only perfect, but it is also special to me. I cannot bring myself to give it a rating of 10/10 because that would be assigning it a number, and I feel like I'd be disrespecting the movie by quantifying what it means to me. A mere number won't do justice to properly explain its significance to me. 😅 Yes, it really is that special to me, haha. I've heard that the manga is supposedly better than the movie, but every time I hear people say this, they also put down the movie by calling it bad in an attempt to promote the manga. I, obviously, didn't appreciate them trashing my beloved anime. I thought anyone who didn't see the movie for the beautiful experience that it is, as I did, was just stupid. This made me automatically dismiss their sentiment about the manga being better. However, you praised the movie and convinced me that the manga could be even better. Thank you for that. I will read the manga. 👍

@@AzA609 you are welcome. Happy reading. Reading the manga in no way reduced my enjoyment of the movie. I have rewatched the movie and reread the manga multiple times, and enjoyed it each time. I guess it's because even though KyoAni had to scrap some plot points, they understood the characters and the atmosphere of the story really well. The core message of the story was just as powerful in both media. In manga you just get more of it, (and a bit more closure). I guess that is the reason I picked up the manga in the first place. I liked the movie so much that I wanted more of it. Usually in similar situations, I have to settle with different stories with some similar elements, but it just so happened that this particular story had a manga which wasn't fully adapted in the movie.
@AzA609
@AzA609 5 ай бұрын
@@uddaloknag1751 I didn't realise how much longer the manga is. I just assumed it was the same length as the movie because I didn't look into it, but now I will read it. I usually avoid going back to experience a story that I consider to be a masterpiece, so I never rewatch a good movie, show, or video game because they take a lot of energy for me to savour, so I only focus on spending my energy on newer experiences. It has been a long time since I last experienced A Silent Voice, so I am ready for the manga.

My recommendation I always send to my newer anime friends is Kaguya Sama, but specifically the dub. Because it keeps the heart of the show but is easier to consume as its in their home language. Also Sinclair knocks it out of the park and sets unrealistic expectations for dubs. It's also for the fact that it overexplains itself perfectly especially with japanese history and games.

Tbh I feel like Kimi Ni Todoke is the better entry-level romance, while still being one of the best romances if not THE best as of today. People that aren't into the genre kind of forgot of 2000s and early 2010s romances but they were SO GOOD (especially the former's) and Kimi Ni Todoke was just... God, when the announcement for the 3rd season got out, I just couldn't help smiling for a full week. For "for mum" I'd ALSO go with "Maquia", so good, beautiful tale of motherhood, just a different type of, I'd recommend them both in such a category, but I'm glad he at least got it as a backup title. ALSO!!! One important category is missing: spokon. And that spot goes to Haikyuu!! hands down. Perfect for a newbie, and still one of the best sports series ever created while also being not just about sports. Such an incredible series.

I think something like Megalobox is the perfect anime for a dad, more mature, still introducing them to the more anime kinda things like the side kick kids & sci-fi mechanical boxing stuff... But the themes and episode 1 cliffhanger will for sure get them to episode 2 and the rest I think... While season 2 can also immediately surprise them with the dramatic mature themes

As a youth worker, and someone who's been up to my elbows in anime/videogame culture for at least 30 years, I've spent a lot of time explaining the culture to people who aren't familiar with it, not just parents of young people, but even those in generations above my own who are in their 60's and 70's these days. There's a few I generally recommend to folks new to the genre, and its like you said, it depends on their tastes. One rule though, no highschool stuff. Most of these people don't want to see that, unless they want to know their teenage child is watching. For the more action-centred anime, I generally recommend Black Lagoon, its real-world setting and no superpowers means people unfamiliar with anime can relate it back to action tv/movies with just enough smart writing to keep them hooked. For the more feel-good stuff, I tend to recommend Watanabe's Carole & Tuesday, especially if they're familiar with shows like American Idol, have a disdain for modern mainstream music (which is most older audiences), and has a lot of themes going on in the background that a lot of uninitiated audiences can relate to, such as politics and issues within society. Its also a good way to transition them into more mainstream anime, as its set in the same universe as Cowboy Bebop. For those old enough to actually know who Alfred Hitchcock is, I tend to recommend Perfect Blue. Its a psychological thriller that is very much in the same vein as the old Alfred Hitchcock movies of old. Lastly, Hajime no Ippo. While the anime hasn't kept up with the manga, anything that's still going after 30 years is going to get the attention of older audiences and sports fans alike. Exploring the mechanics of the human body like anime does has big appeal to sports nuts, as well as that most of these people know what Rocky is, they can make that connection of the underdog rising through the ranks by boxing (with just the slightest touch of romance that they had often seen with Hong Kong cinema) is something uninitiated audiences tend to really relate to.

I think easiest way to get someone to watch an anime is to pick one that is available on a platfrom they are regular viewers of. Comedian Bill Burr watched One-Punch Man, because it was promoted on Netflix at the time and he enjoyed it big times, despite having no prior knowledge about anime. So good criterias for first anime should be: - Availability on popular streaming services - Good Dub - Easy to digest themes without in jokes

I love that the last slide is just SAO. Like most of us growing up in that day remember vivedly how we watched SAO, it was just the best out there at the time for becoming Isekai Trashheads. Pls make Part two, like an Advanced List for people that watch anime regularly but maybe never heard of some older shows that are top notch on their premis

Mushi shi is also a decent pick for certain audiences. Ergo proxy... Because it's awesome for intellectuals. I 100% agree with AoT, Your Name and Wolf Children

16:25 I had to do a double take. I thought this sounded so eerily familiar and then I realized I was just Rick Rolled in Japanese. I cannot believe that this exists. I love it!

Back in the day I watched Vampire Hunter D, Akira and Robot Carnival on SciFi channel with my mom. Usually it was on Saturday early mornings but we caught a few on a weekday evenings. She loved it. My mom loved story telling and I think she appreciated the uniqueness of those three. Our normal watch was Masterpiece Mystery since I was little and she read Redwall and LOTR to us annually so my sister and I were used to death and violence in story telling. As I look back my mom was amazing and I miss her dearly. I makes me happy to see Garnt with his mom.

Solid picks, to be honest. There are categories where I'd have a different pick, but picking ONE show is hard. and doesn't really make sense, outside of the context of a video. I think for recommending good starter animes, discussing what genre the person in front of you would be interested in first is indeed important, obviously, but then having a single pick is a bit too hit or miss in my opinion. Just have say 3 picks with different appeals, but have those differences be simple enough to be explained in a single sentence to not be overwhelming, and easy to remember. Like "Oh, so you want something that you feel could be released by HBO if it were live action, basically? Well, you have Attack on Titan, where the last bastion of humanity is threatened by man-eating titans, so if you want great world building and an amazing plot, way deeper than what you may expect rn, with a lot of twists and turns in the story, that's for you. The action's really cool, too. Though, if you feel more like watching some dramatic story about Vikings, you have Vinalnd Saga. That show knows how to do good action, but also have quieter moments, entire arcs even, where you have the characters questioning themselves, the world, their relationships, etc. And if you Want something more like a murder mystery drama, but from the point of view of the murderer, with a bit of supernatural, try Death Note, another classic whith a smart-ass student that has a notebook that's able to kill anyone whose name is written on it. He uses it to kill criminals only, and sinks deeper and deeper into madness, while playing 8D chess against a genius detective." That's just a random example, but that way I feel like you give more options. because people who don't know shit about anime don't know what a death note is. they just heard of Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Maybe Bleach? and if they're your parents maybe they heard about older shows you don't know of lmao, but that's it. And giving more diversified recommendations may spark interest in the other person like "damn vikings sound dope, but I think I feel like watching a show where you follow the bad guy right now. But I'll keep the other two in the back of my mind". Plus, if the person ends up dropping one, they may end up "Nah, In the end, I can't put up with having the bad guy as the Main character, I think I feel too forced to be sympathetic to him... Let's try this other one with the Titans, that sounds safer" (plot twist incoming lmao) Recommending your favourite anime is cool, recommending your own first anime is probably even better, but just adapt your suggestion to the person. I've seen friends recommend random seasonal anime bullshit to people that doesn't watch anime... it hurts. it actually physically hurt, please stop. At least give some "tamer" shows. the most important rule is probably the "no anime BS". unless you're recommending an anime for a middle/high schooler, i guess.

I agree with all of the list, but I'll really recommend Clannad for Romance / Highschool / Slice of Life. And of course, Your Lie in April is also a great pick.

I was literally making my picks as you went through this and almost everything was the same HAHAHA. For Drama I was in a mix with A Silent Voice and Wolf Children but after you got to for Mom, it made so much more sense to have it there.

I feel like a category that i would put is also "reflexive", that anime that you can vibe with and their themes are so compelling and beautiful that you constantly think about them, and none other anime fits that category for me than Mushishi. I showed Mushishi to my mother (keep in mind i also hadn't watched it at that time) and the vibes were something that i don't see ANY anime do. Yeah it's episodical, but every story is memorable, and the fact that it's told in such a calm and relaxing way, it's a breath of fresh air when most of what anime fans like about the medium is flashy colors and character fight goes zoom (and most of the more popular anime fits in these categories). Mushishi is unforgetable, man. And also has 0 anime bullshit! Both me and my mother loved the anime to pieces

If it's someone who has never watched anime, my default starter for them usually comes from the Studio Ghibli library. They have a magical feel to them, and since they aren't series, there is no stress for them to feel like having to commit to anything, and you can pick from a variety of themes from the fantastic and magical to the more realistic. I find that it helps ease them in without overwhelming them.

The thing to remember if you're trying to get someone into anime is that failure is always an option. Sometimes people are too stuck in their ways to see animation as anything other than for kids (even if that animation features explicit nudity and/or blood and gore, they'll just ask why they show this to kids in Japan) or maybe it's just not for them. Don't force the issue.
