Why does everyone massively increase their prices? I don't get why they think the average consumer would go out and buy a board that costs 30% more for the same feature set.

I think they want to be like GPU manufacturers and ride along. Or us to think so. Bleeding edge developers... but they just aren't. MB are like TVs. All using same or similar parts and technologies. Small nuances, design, connections designed by software and that's about it. Furthermore, looking at the temp differences, some aren't even that good at doing it. Sell something, sell now, think later. Business has been supply driven for at least half a century. There's a saying here, translates roughly "dumb people aren't dinosaurs, they won't go extinct". Dumb people have got money too.

They'd only raise prices if they were confident people will pay the new prices. And they often are.

But that's how it works, the 40 series was a failure, Nvidia is trying to mitigate the situation with a new version, the positive side is that it forces the current cards to lower their price while the new ones take the place of the current ones offering more performance for a similar price.

Thanks for doing roundups it seems like nobody else does these anymore and they're super helpful. edit: I'm not sure if it's accurate across the board for Gigabyte, but Buildzoid mentioned the cheaper Z790 refresh used an updated memory topology which was from a more expensive model original release.

Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite X is NOT just a "previous elite + wi-fi 7". It has ram overclocking SIGNIFICANTLY improved and some other quality of life improvements. It is in many ways a better product and is worth the extra 40$. These kind of videos make me question the expertise of this channel.

Also the new Elite X is 8 layer vs the old Elite AX being 6, and along with the other changes others have mentioned probably all adds to how it's supposedly better with memory OC. Backdrilling was another thing Buildzoid mentioned but I'm not familiar myself with what that is aside from supposedly being better for memory OC. Also the vrm is different, 16 90a phases vs 16 70a phases. The audio was also updated to the 1220, instead of the 897 on the old board. So yeah, actually pretty significantly a different board, more changes than what some others did for their refresh boards.

@@Hardwareunboxed Hey, while I'm here I got a question. Do you think you guys could do CPU+GPU bottleneck testing comparisons for a set budget? Let's say you're building a PC $1500 USD if I get a i3 13400, and a 4070Ti would I be better off than if I got a 14600k and I 4060 for example. Or, if I had an older PC how far could I spend on a GPU before I upgrade my CPU? All normal benchmarks separate this aspect for proper testing. But in the real world the limit is usually the budget. So seeing how low you can go on the CPU before you run into issues would be interesting. I'd guess the main issues would show up at 1080p. I think you technically did a video like this before (3600 + 3080), but an update would be nice. Hardware Canucks also did a video like this. If I explained what I meant horribly it was called "4090 trashes older ryzen cpus" I guess the easiest way to test would be to just run the all CPUs with different priced GPUs that way the data can be universal for anyone's budget. Would certainly be an insane amount of work though.

I've been surprised to see the Gigabyte board at such low price and with a 10G port. Usually, these ports are only available on 1000$+ boards but this one was only 530$USD. Again, imo, that's still super expensive. If you need 10G, I'd say pick a 200$-ish board and buy a separate 10G network card that'll run you an extra 100$USD. You'll save 200$ over a stupid network port where anybody wants your wallet _and_ a kidney to get this single 10G port.

Wow, firstly congratulations to 1 Million subscribers. Did you mean PL1 unlocked instead PL2? Because PL falls back to PL1 after 56 seconds. Some more ideas for testing: 1) DDR speeds possible 2) Boot speed with different options: Fast Boot & Windows Fast Boot + unchecking unnecessary boot devices (USB stick, SATA etc.) 3) M.2 speeds 4) USB speeds. Maybe also with multiple at once 5) WiFi/LAN speeds. I guess not all use Intel (?) First i used the 14900k on a Tomahawk DDR4 and the XTU stress tests were failing, now with Z790 Dark Hero no problems. Having PL1=PL2=253W lets run the CPU max at 210-220W with lower clock speeds, while having 288W limit (Tomahawk) it pulled up to 288W with higher clockspeeds. It is trange that it doesn’t hits at standard Intel limits the PL. I have a game that can push the CPU to over 200W. If the game performs better if i maybe set 300W PL1 & PL2 or unlimited? Because there is the invisible wall of 210-220W at Intel PL. Dark Hero has PL1 253W and PL2 unlimited.

Why does the 14900K loose so much frequency when run at 250W? It seems like there is an issue with the voltage curve of the 14900K and it always runs at the same VCore regardless of PL2. Expected behaviour would be that VCore is reduced and at 254W you should get something around 5.2GHz. At 3.75GHz you usually have around 100W power consumption, not 250W.

No, its because those board are running on Intel`s base power after the boost at a mere 125w. As Steve says, the messy part abt the Intel boards are there maybe 3 cofigurations out of the box, No Power Limit, 253w for both PL1 and PL2, and Intel Specs 125w and 253w.

@@user-ex6sh5fo1q 16:00 The chart shows 3750MHz and around 250W package power. I think Steve is experienced enough to know how to correctly record HWInfo data and it is the same for several boards, so obviously not a typo. Either there is something wrong with the CPU (bad voltage curve of some microcode mess) or he did the 1.3V VCore test before the regular one on ALL boards and forgot to set it back to default.

Something's up here. It doesn't seem right that running with 250-280W power limits vs letting it run unlimited/thermally limited at 308-330W would result in a 1.5-1.8GHz difference in clock speed. I'd expect a few hundred points difference in the score and around 100MHz lower clocks.

this, while I wont comment on 12+1+1 upgrades - many of the mid-range fresh boards got features that were previously only for high end like layers to 8 and top ram speeds, and as you said, better power delivery. or rather, many mid-range board that cost a good price are giving you the features they should, which 590 and 690 most certainly did not.

hurrr durr let me use "dead platform" talking points - hey news flash, Intel only lets two, maybe three cpu gens/"gens" per socket, so what are you even on about? Also, for anyone not buying 14t5h gen chips, wich is most people, this is not dead for them. you amd fanboys who sometimes pretend to be something else need new talking points - if intels actions in this regard mattered that much, they wouldnt have the market share they unfortiantly have.

@@xBINARYGODx I have the z690 formula my friend with a 13900k. So from my perspective, advising anyone on older silicon considering upgrading to z790, I would say to skip z790 and wait for z890 and arrow lake. Z890 will be a Newer platform with more pcie lanes directly attached to the cpu, with ability to run at least 1 nvme 5.0 drive and the GPU at 16x simultaneously, perhaps thunderbolt 5, WiFi 7, and most likely 1, if not cpu 2 upgrades. When arrow lake and nova lake arrive the ipc increases will be very attractive compared to raptor lake, and so I don’t think it’s wise for people to spend their money on these dead-end boards unless they absolutely have to. If these boards supported arrow lake, then my opinion would be different and I would say full steam ahead. But they’re dead end so, so it’s not wise to waste your time.

God, the price and selection of motherboards these days are insane. What an absolute shit show. I grabbed my Asus ROG Strix-F Z390 board when it was new for $249. This board was the second highest in the Strix lineup back then, only surpassed by the Strix-E. My 9700k was also only $330. Brand new. The (artificial) inflation on PC hardware is a god damn insult.

Personal recommendation: I have used manual OC with static voltage and clocks for over a decade now. While boosting is nice, I prefer to instead limit the maximum speed to avoid hitting thermal throttling. This ensures consistent performance. Also, while the system may not be as fast as possible, the room doesn’t get as hot. Intel’s boosting behavior will consume every last watt for greatly diminishing returns in power, performance, and heat generation. The final benefit is also noise, because the fans don’t need to spin up to keep the system cool.

z690 Aorus Master ($590-ish AUD) cuz MSI decided to bump their z690 Carbon to $700+. (I actually wanted MSI mobo to play with their bios as I have already have ASRock and Gigabyte Mobo.) - Can't convince myself to buy MSI after sudden price hike and Asus always $200+ more expensive. - Post code, USB real estate, physical buttons, fan hub, full audio, beefy heat sinks. (Quality of Life) - Similar/better feature set as MSI. (Except missing HDMI port on Master) - Bios easy to update with USB to 13th Gen. Why not z790 Aorus Master? - Absurd price premium for unreasonable upgrades/changes. - Quick release button is nice, not $300 nice. - Why pay for Gen 5 if Gen 4/3 is all you reasonably need? - Downgraded audio hub. - Looks almost the same mobo if you don't go into detail.

All the WiFi at so called Pro-Boards is total BS! If you are a Pro, you have a professional network in your work-/living-place and you don't need/want WiFi at your desktop-pc-mainboard. The same for audio at pro-mainboards; what you just need is a digital audio-output like HDMI. Everything else is BS, because if you are a Pro, you have a real professional or even high-end sound processor like an av-receiver for your audio. All these shenanigans you don't really need as a pro-user, are totally waste!

"richer" audio snobs will use dedicated streamers that are designed for clean audio output because pc usb audio is very noisy. Youll see people complain sometimes that their usb dongle dac buzzes when connected to a pc but not to their phone. Thats because most motherboards and pc's in general radiate insane amounts of emi/rfi and dont care about audio in general. There used to be motherboards with dedicated usb ports powered be their own seperate usb hub, but those have gone the way of the dodo cuz people use think "get a dedicated dac". You really shouldnt review vrms on temperature. Better voltage regulation comes with inherent efficiency loss so youre encouraging performance regression in the actual job of the vrm. You also dont seem to lock vrm switching or active phases do the more a vrm gimps those the better theyll look in reviews. There is also the fact that vrm temperature doesnt play any role besides vrm lifespan (of which theyll generally last over a decade at well over 100c at the mosfets where the temps are monitored snd derived from). Unlike a cpu or gpu which is using a pretty on edge voltage for a node where it'll degrade rapidly at a given temp and needs to throttle and that throttling means less data calculated, a vrm doesnt pass data or meet any of those reasons why throttling exists on the cpu or gpu.

Would you be interested in doing some full system power draw lineups? im very interested in some controlled data with the best possible tuning to tame idle power, single core load and all core load and see what cpu's and boardd com bos are the best. idle power costs a absolute fortune these days and can results in hundreds of bucks over the years so its very much interestring to see some controlled data. I'm really interestedin the 7800X3D but the idle draws i see compared to intel keep me from buying it. Im curious how much of a gain there is to be had when tuning and the same goes for intel rigs. my system is on 10 to 14 hours a day but i only game a few hours the rest is light loads and if i compare some random data from amd vs my 9900k my 9900k is absurdly efficient compared to amd options this gen. It is amazing to see such a big, 30C, difference in temperatures. I think if Cinebench scores were reported, the boards with the highest temperatures would have slightly higher performance. Also had you the ability to measure noise, the fan noise and temperature would correlate quite nicely. To really see the difference in quality of the boards, each of the boards would have to be set up exactly the same using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Using core frequency can be misleading because a thread on a high frequency core will cause that core to overheat and the thread will be moved to a cooler core. This movement of the thread takes time but does no useful work. Using the older version of the Aorus Master, I did an under frequency, under voltage, set the turbo boost time to 1 second, and set a power limit of 260 watts on a 13900K, and still got a 30 minute Cinebench 23 score of over 40000 while Furmark was running on a 4090 GPU.

It is sad that Gigabyte tries to hide all the features on their new boards and charge more for their white boards and give you less. It is the same with AMD x670e/B650 boards as they sell you the same name boards and add Ice and X and lower the PCB layers to 6. Gigabyte hides their features like ALC897 Codec audio and just call it High Def. and force you to find it somewhere in all their Docs. Gigabyte has no problem showing the ALC 1220 Codec in the main description. The Pro X would have been the perfect board if done the right way Like M.2 gen 5 and PCIe Gen 5 but they didn't and they still charge way to much just to get white. The Gigabyte Pro X looks great but they now kimit you to M.2 Gen 5 OR PCIe 16x but you don't get both and I don't call that a upgrade for the price. All the board Companies make the latest board and make them the same or cheaper and CHARGE YOU MORE. The sad part is they add WI Fi7 and you can buy and install it for $43 and they chatge $100's and you get nothing more.
