Harris did say that torture should be illegal. Than he said that the government should torture people anyway, because "sometimes it's moral to break the law."
@modelmajorpita

***** Not the point. When you say that it is moral to torture someone and moral to break the law in the same paragraph, you can't hide behind saying that torture should be illegal to avoid admitting you advocate human rights violations and war crimes.

Are you actually a Sam Harris multi? You not only repeat his failed argument in favor of war crimes, you even respond as if I was addressing you instead of him.
@modelmajorpita

***** "I've given you a great example of a thought experiment in which torture would be justified, and you have no counter-argument." You already responded to my counter argument: torture doesn't work, does not give useful info, and so is completely useless in a ticking time bomb scenario. "As a national policy? No, of course not. As a private actor? Yep." Oh, right, you're one of those nutjobs. It's wrong for the *government* to torture people, but individuals should be allowed to do whatever they want.

Alexander Rowe That's because thats what happens. These people either don't understand because they are so ridiculously inept (Ben Affleck) or they take the things he says and purposefully lie and distort his views (Reza Aslan). Then all the people in the media that want a nice juicy controversial piece about a famous person and bigotry, or want to push a certain kind of narrative, have those dishonest people and others on to repeat the bullshit.

As another commenter has said, if he was only doing a thought experiment and wasn't trying to purposely upset people then it would have been *very* easy. All he would have to do is say "Of course for us in the real world my actual position is ...". A simple caveat to explain his actual position right before or after his "thought" experiment could have helped prevent "misunderstandings". If a lot of people misinterpret your meaning then the burden falls on you to communicate more effectively.

+Richard Taylor Exactly my thought. That is why Neil deGrasse Tyson is such a celebrity and well viewed not because is the smartest one, is because he also knows to explain science in simple terms. He is a great communicator and a great help to real world. Harris on the other hand he might be smart but if people are misunderstanding your statements then you do more harm then good.

+Freenix I don't think that's true. There are many moderate new atheists, like Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett. I'm even hesitant to invoke the word "bigot" when describing Hitchens or Harris, though their fairly strong opinions on Islam undoubtedly contribute to prejudice against Muslims. The main problem is their support for a hawkish foreign policy and excessive state power at home.

Well, in all these definitions, "new atheist" still makes zero sense, unless you are literally a "new" atheist I suppose. I suggest you all read Sam Harris' quote on what atheism actually is, and then you will stop sticking all these extra things onto it. “In fact, "atheism" is a term that should not even exist. No one ever needs to identify himself as a "non-astrologer" or a "non-alchemist." We do not have words for people who doubt that Elvis is still alive or that aliens have traversed the galaxy only to molest ranchers and their cattle. Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make in the presence of unjustified religious beliefs.” In this case Freenix your definition of a "bigot" is an odd one to say the least xD

My problem with "New atheism" is this: what's wrong with atheism? Why do we need a "new" version? I'm an atheist. I don't believe in an existential god character. That's it. "New atheism" "atheism plus" etc. are just superfluous. It's just adding baggage to something that's currently very simple. Don't become denominational like religion has. It's simple, atheist = doesn't believe in a god. Period. End of sentence, full stop.

+Thiago Santos New atheists are interested in portraying the bad ideas associated with religion and how those ideas do more harm than good. New atheists are not interested in what you specifically believe in. You can believe in the sky daddy all you want, but they want to make clear of those ideas within in a specific religion that influences violence, hatred, ingnorance, etc., that in the world causes harm and intolerance of other people who do not believe just as they do. The objective of the New Atheist is to create more tolerance in the world. As an atheist myself I do not hate religion nor do I think you should give up your convictions, but if your convictions hold intolerant and/or harmful views/ideas toward others then those specific religious ideas are bad. We can all agree that many ideas within any specific text hold some rather good priniciples to live by. Those are good ideas. But again, there are some bad ideas within various religions that inspire hate and violence. It's important to recognize these differences and make people aware of them. We are not interested in taking your religion away.

"Some propositions have become so dangerous that it may even be ethical to kill those who have such beliefs. Prophet Harris advocate the genocide of Muslims here. "We are not interested in taking your religion away". Another strong bullshit here but I wonder what the prophets of New Atheist says. "If i have a magic wand, i'll ban religion over rape". "the only thing that currently stands between us and the roiling oceans of muslim unreason is a wall of tyranny and human rights abuses that we have helped to erect." (the end of faith, p.132) pretty much everything you need to know about the guy.
@jimmyart007
@jimmyart007 8 жыл бұрын
Perhaps one requires the rest of the statement in order to actually avoid ceaselessly beating a strawman: 'There is no doubt that out collusion with Muslim tyrants - in Iraq, Syria, Algeria, Iran, Egypt, and elsewhere - has been despicable. We have done nothing to discourage the mistreatment and outright slaughter of tens of thousands of Muslims by their own regimes - regimes that, in many cases, we helped bring to power. Our failure to support the Shiite uprising in southern Iraq in 1991, which we encouraged, surely ranks among the most unethical and consequential foreign policy blunders of recent decades. But our culpability on this front must be bracketed by the understanding that were democracy to suddenly come to these countries, it would be little more than a gangplank to theocracy. There does not seem to anything within the principles of Islam by which to resist the slide into sharia (Islamic law), while there is everything to encourage it. This is a terrible truth that we have to face: the only thing that currently stands between us and the roiling oceans of Muslim unreason is a wall of tyranny and human rights abuses that we have helped to erect. This situation must be remedied, but we cannot merely force Muslim dictators from power and open the polls. It would be like opening the polls to the Christians of the fourteenth century.' I would venture to suggest that both yourself and this Mr. Seder would rather mindlessly chide and denounce someone who is actually willing to think seriously about the topic at hand than actually contribute to the discussion in any meaningful way. I might also add that as far as intellectual honesty goes, I'm not so much questioning your collective integrity as denying its existence.

Zatzzo I find it difficult to believe that that is what you actually took from the statement, my apologies if English is not your first language, but allow me to elaborate. The above quote doesn't proffer a dogmatic solution in the way you might wish it to, but merely outlines an issue. If anything it suggests that 'forcing' the Muslim countries to adopt secular democracy _from the outside_ is doomed to failure, and recent history should indicate that this is true. Rather, what the West should be doing instead of invading countries on a whim is empowering the voices of moderation and rationality in the Muslim world so that they can achieve their own reformation, their own renaissance. By allowing the most extreme form of Islamism to be taken as the norm we are made guilty twice: firstly by succumbing to the racism of low expectations (the 'oh they can't do better so we must defend how they are now'), and secondly by throwing our own hard-fought freedoms in the gutter simply to not appear too critical, or god forbid, 'Islamophobic'. From what I gather you either do not care enough to see the distinction or are willfully maintaining your ignorance so as to malign those who do. In either instance, you do a disservice to your brothers and sisters on every side.

Ronin Dave I didn't get that impression at all. Sure he did it some times, but not really any more than Sam did. On top of that Sam uses a lot of mocking and power plays to bully the caller, which just leads to agression.

Its not that no one understands him. There are plenty of people who understand him and support him. However Harris himself is not someone who is willing to say under NO circumstances is military actions warranted. He is also quite critical of Islam. There are many on the left now whom somehow think that if you criticize Islam you somehow want to demonize all Muslims as well as support endless military involvement which a neo con would. Any threat is perceived with this irrational bias just like people who are right wing have their biases so do people on the left. But we can easily end this whole thing now by acknowledging Sam is pro intervention (of some kind) but not endless war Why not talk to Harris yourself. Everyone seems to be so good at interpreting him and "reading between the lines" You say one the one hand that he is misinterpreted by everyone. and on the other hand admit you are dismissing what he is ACTUALLY saying and insisting he must mean something else. That's a huge contradiction which I am sure will continue to be deliberately made no matter how many times he has clarified his position. Has it occurred to you that people on the left just like people in the right CAN be deliberately biased and can also have biased agendas even against other people on the left if they think that its the "right thing to do"

People who aren't familiar with Sam Harris should read his work and make their own judgments about him. As a progressive myself I'm personally very surprised by how he's being characterized by people on the left.

12:51 Sam Harris advocates conversation of ideas. I would link to a direct quote, but we all know Sam Seder would just ignore it. But when Sam Harris, or anyone for that matter, speaks up about religious ideologous that stem from Islam, he/we are called Islamophobes. Just looks at how red in the face Sam gets in this video. Just like Billy boy when his only arugement is to shout "Shut Up!"

It's actually quite fascinating to observe this phenomenon of people not getting Harris. I don't think he's perfect, but he's far from being a charlatan or a neoconservative. If you happen to be a rather cynical person and believe that people are really satisfied with being concerned exclusively with how things seem; having no real inclination to overcome their biases and get around their own egos to get closer to a more truthful mental model - well then I can understand why you would criticize Harris in this way and fundamentally mischaracterize his arguments. This would be a sensible response perhaps if most people were *actually* right wing religious demagogues or hawkish warmongers believing themselves to have the right of it without much self doubt (what a depressing state of affairs that would be...). On the other hand if you are the sort of person who reasons from first principles and is looking to reconcile inconsistencies in your model of reality first off and then inconsistencies with the models presented by others, Harris makes a lot of sense on the topics he discusses. Even in cases where he may actually come to the wrong conclusions given pragmatic grounds (he doesn't know everything, and in the foreign policy domain, he sometimes bites off more than he can chew) he is however seldom wrong in *principle*.... but perhaps that would seem meaninglessly abstract to this crew. The fact that they haven't even heard of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy was telling; they also didn't seem to know that the ticking time bomb scenario depicted there has happened before. If you think thought experiments have nothing to do with reality, you simply don't understand what they are or their utility for getting at ethical truth. The only decoder items you need to understand Harris are your ears, an brain, but patience and a respect for logic and its utility really help. You would benefit from taking a philosophy course or two instead of treating discursive thought with such derision; it would do both you and your listeners a lot of good.

Creationism and climate change are only correlated in the US. In Europe there's not much correlation between them at all and in general the Left wing deny more science in Europe than the Right do. (GMOs, vaccines, nuclear power safety, biological differences between sexes etc etc)

This Sam Seder acts very childishly in this phone interview. He doesn't actually address any of Harris's views seriously, and is obviously lying about having read the material in question, but expresses no hesitation in slamming Harris despite his ignorance of what was actually said. He treats his guest very rudely (and smugly). He then mocks Harris for complaining about the lack of journalistic integrity while he displays this very lack unambiguously. He didn't even address HOW calling Harris a "neocon" is "shorthand." We're sorry your brain is not big enough to apply philosophy to practical matters, Mr. Seder, but try to refrain from spouting nonsense and cheap jokes about a man who has devoted his life to serious moral philosophy. You are a) missing the point of the conversation, and b) spreading opinions without any basis in fact (due to the apparent lack of interest on your part of reading the body of work that you are dismissing as "huckster"-ism). It's incredible to me that you have viewers. The ones you do have...I feel sorry for them.
