New Balance SuperComp Trainer - Is This a Gimmick?

The New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer is a tall stack height shoe with premium foam and a carbon fiber plate. It's so tall that it's illegal for pros to race in, which some may say is a cheap way of generating buzz. Does it even matter that it's this tall? Or is there an advantage for this kind of stack height.

Trained up for my first marathon earlier in the year, these were released a week before race day. I was planning on running 3:30:00 and in my 1080s but these passed my wide foot test so I had to buy them. Took them for my taper run and loved them. Ended up going 3:19:00 for the marathon with a big negative split for the last 4kms @ low 4 min/kms. Safe to say I cannot recommend these enough and even for you tri-hards out there (takes one to know one 😉) very comfortable, durable and fast.

I love these shoes. I took them out for the first time on my long run last week, and the ride and energy return that these shoes provided me was amazing. Oh I love ur reviews i really do - Iv been looking at getting these for the last few days and I think uv done a great job of convincing me that these might actually be the ones for me - I suffer from weird knees not necessarily painful they feel weird if I don’t get the right shoe like there kinda lose and about to pop out of the socket weird ! I seem to respond better to a high stack and relatively low drop - i absolutely loved the Saucony endorphin shifts absolutely the shoe for me but when they updated to version 2 oh god there nowhere near the same I was soooo upset and I’m at abit of a loss as to what to do now but I think these with the high stack and same drop as the OG Shifts and a lovely bouncy feeling that I also love - I think these might do the job - especially if they kinda roll from the mid sole rather than the front - I need all the roll I can get - I can’t do a rigid shoe as this then travels up my shins to my knees and ewww I get that awful feeling in them - right thanks again - love u think ur gr8 🫶 Clair x

while I understand why the running shoes industry is pushing for taller stack height shoes since current running is mostly happening on hard surfaces i.e. pavement, tarmac, concrete - so cushioning resonates with lots of runners BUT nice cushioning does not mean taller stack height at all. In fact, many of us love shoes with a medium to low stack height shoes with nice cushioning so the contact with the ground is felt nicely.

I’m a member of the in-between camp I guess. I loved the Boston9 and the shoe in my current rotation that’s close to that is the Hyperion Tempo. I did my 1st marathon in the Brooks Launch6 even though the new “supershoes” had just hit the running world. Over the last couple of years as I’ve entered my 7th decade and been running Boston every year, I’m thinking I might benefit from more cushion than the Endorphin Speed 1 & 2 which I’ve used there so far. I have no interest in the likes of these off-the-chart stack heights as I’m 5’3”, 101 lbs and it’s overkill. However, I’m going to test the Endorphin Pro3 to see if it might save my legs next April with it’s increased midsole. For anything less than a marathon, I’m sticking with medium stack. I do like some ground feel too.

Thanks for all the great reviews. Love watching them even if many aren’t for me. The slow marathoner. I hate to ask questions as opposed to just commenting. Can’t imagine how you find time to answer. But no one really addresses the slow people. (All shoe reviewers are like that). So I’m guessing I speak for many who will be on a course for five hours or more while everyone else is finished and drinking beer. We probably all need max Cush. That will handle both run and walk intervals. Does this shoe qualify? And in your vast Kofuzi brain database - any other shoe suggestions for that crowd? (I think you’d be surprised how many of us follow you. Might even be worth an entire video someday). Thanks again for all the great stuff. Honestly. I watch running videos on KZfaq more than television by far. I am also a bit concerned about going from a 4 to a 8 drop. Especially as the fall race approaches. I know you did one on that topic - kinda - a good while back. But again - as it relates to someone (a whole segment of people) who might spend twice your time on course - probably another topic a lot of followers are interested in.

What kind of socks do you wear for the aesthetics that match SC Trainer look? I think it would be look best with “no-show” or ankle socks but worry about blistering. Has anyone experienced this?

Some people hate change, and anything that doesn’t match what they have is the worst thing ever, not just another option that might work for other people (which it should be). We’re not all the same shape and size and no 2 human bodies are the same. I’m glad shoes like this and the Prime X exist. Companies have to try stuff or we’d all still be running in flat plimsolls of 70 years ago and running a marathon would be out of the question for most people. Some ideas will fail, some will just be very niche but people shouldn’t get so attached to their beliefs about running shoes! Try something different, try it with an open mind, you never know

Seems like these super shoes already have more midsole foam than I need. The Endorphin Pro 3 for example.... overkill for my 136lbs. Though, I do enjoy how bouncy, resilient and efficient the hi-tech foam can be. Excellent review. Thanks

I’m training for a 24 hour race on pavement and I’m using this shoe for the 2nd day of back to back long runs as kind of a recovery shoe. It’s not nearly as fast as the alphafly which I use the for the first long run but that’s probably what makes it good for the 2nd day. Being a shorter guy, I really enjoy feeling tall in it 😂. To me it’s an easy, long run or recovery shoe. I can’t go that fast in it but have never done a comprehensive workout at a variety of paces in it like Kofuzi did. Nice job doing that and great analysis!

How would you compare this to he Nike Invincible? Same genre?
@kofuzi
@kofuzi 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure either shoe intended to be like the other, but they do share a lot of similarities. The Invincible is a lot more assertive in that you are almost required to strike mid foot for the shoe to make any sense. The knit from NB is also far superior to the fake knit of the Invincible
@jprelock
@jprelock 2 жыл бұрын
This shoe and the Invincible are two of the only modern shoes I've tried. I saw a review that said this shoe was softer than the Invincible and had to see for myself. It is not softer under foot. For walking I prefer the Invincible. For running that propulsive SC feel is remarkable. @kofuzi I experienced the heel pop like you described but not having experienced any other plated shoes I assumed the others would act like this one. Interesting info about plating acting differently in different implementations.
