A state of emergency on the islands has now been triggered as the reinforcements look to "regain control", according to French High Commissioner Louis Le Franc.
The unrest erupted this week after lawmakers in Paris backed and approved changes to voting rolls that the indigenous population say will dilute their political influence.
Hundreds of people have been injured, and officials say around 200 people have been arrested so far.

The indigenous population were the permitted voters, so they had more political power over their homeland. Population from settlers/colonisers were not allowed to vote. Goverment is changing this, the indigenous population are protesting about loosing their political influence, power.

In order to be able to vote in the local government elections you now are required of having been a permanent resident of the island for a minimum of 10 years. Beforehand you were only able to vote if you were a permanent resident of the island since before 1998.

They've had a few referendums that have rejected independence. One in 2018 rejected it by 57%, another in 2020 rejected by 53%, and one in 2021 by 97% but this was only because the independence parties boycotted the vote.

This is not a colony. But a province on equal footing with those in Europe. Besides they reject it the independence referendums on three recent occasions.

'Escaping state control' I mean now the first time that has happened to French colonies when France hasn't accepted the days of colonies is gone. At least the UK saw the writiing on the wall there and granted most of its Empire independence. Vietnam, Algeria, the African countries sick and tired of French interference, just let it go France.

Angry youth, the Influence of Azerbaijan sowing discord - elder Kanak leaders have admitted that they have lost control. It's easier to loot and burn than find a peaceful solution. Many Kanak owned and operated businesses were also destroyed in the unrest. The majority of Kanaks found reasons such as COVID and sorry business for boycotting the 2023 referendum.

This is a province equal to all others in France. Not a colony. Most of the people don’t even want independence. On three separate occasions they rejected it in a referendum.
