Welcome back to Critterland! Today I'm unboxing the NEW Sylvanian Families / Calico Critters 2022 Cozy Cottage (the "mailbox house") and comparing it to the other Starter Home.
I almost didn't buy this, but it was JUST different enough to not seem like a duplicate, so I went for it! Both of these starter home gift sets are currently available in the US (and many other countries); they are a great value for the money, and make wonderful gifts! So I thought I'd unbox and review the new one, and give you a side-by-side comparison with the previous version.
Which one do you like best? Would you get both, or not? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I just bought this house to customize it! I am disappointed with the lack of mattress, but since I’m going to completely paint and change most of it, I think it’s alright. My favorite part is the sink! It’s not the best play set, I’ve owned the oldest starter house and this one now, the oldest one is the best one in my opinion!

I ended up chosing the newer version (it hasn't arrived yet) on the account that the table is round and smaller, and as such takes less space which allows more freendom with the downstairs space. I hadn't noticed the round railings, nor the mailbox or the red detail painting in the upstairs before buying which makes it look so much nicer! The new one is definitely the stand out, I'm happy to conclude! With that said, I also wish they'd kept the old windows. I don't know how I feel about the pink furniture but I've acquired an bedroom set which comes with the tradicional bed so that's not gonna be a problem.

I LOVE the NEW version! Like the caramel color instead of brown, love the upstairs walls are now red, love the mailbox, and love the pastel pink bed and stove! I think it's a definite upgrade. I am definitely getting this one.😊

Thank you for this comparison. I am new to critters and I just bought this as my first starter home. It was interesting to see what the older one had. I am happy with it although I wish they had kept the cute window shutters. 😊

I don’t have any houses yet, but I’m limited on space. The Red Roof Cozy Cottage is the only house that will fit on my bookcase shelf. Now I just have to decide whether to get the new one because of the mailbox, or both so I have more living space for my critters. 😂

I was on the fence about this one so I’m glad you did the side by side comparison. I don’t know that it is enough of a difference for me to get it. I’m currently revamping older critter homes with paint to get some variety

Thank you very, very much for this video 😀😀😀 The comparison is really helpful. I think that they are reducing costs where possible. A trend I can see in several Playmobil sets and buildings as well, which I can understand to a certain point but I prefer quality toys to remain quality toys. Because that's the reason why I like them so much. Thanks again 🥰

As much as I love that mailbox, I'll probably give this one a miss as I already own 3 starter homes! 😆 One I received as a gift and the other two I picked up second hand which I've been considering painting. Not sure how that'll end up though as I've never painted a dolls house before! 🤔 Oh I wish they would release one with a different coloured roof! 😹

I really agree with you, as much as I like the mailbox, I prefer the previous one and I would love for the roof of the house to be a different color.

@Sam-yc2pb It can't be that hard to release a different coloured roof, they do it for other houses/models so why not a classic one like this house? 😆🥰

Thank you for the comparison! I was trying to decide, If the new one had the windows and bed covering from the old one it would be perfect, but since the new one is available cheaper for me I'll get that one 🙃

It have good and bad thinks on both the best would be to mix them up to have the perfect one. I hate the bed with no mattress I guess I will have to make one myself.

The table being round in the newer version instead of rectangular in the old version, doesn’t create the illusion of a bigger home. If that makes sense. I love the rectangular table and chairs, way better. You sold me on getting the older version. 💕💕

I Used to own one of the really old starter homes but it broke after a while im pretty sad that i gave it away but the only thing that wasn't broken was the bed the bench and the kitchen set

I didn’t know that, that’s very interesting! I have actually never seen any Russian Sylvanian sets before, at least not in the packaging, it would be very cool to see what they look like! Thanks for sharing ❤️

Also, I get the brand can't be Sylvanians in the US, but never understood why they use different critter names for US/UK? Maybe they decided to stop? (doubt it - I think it was for packaging efficiency LOL!) 😆

Thank you!! YESSS the Hamburger Restaurant, I don't, but I SO wish I did! I almost bought it a few times, but never pulled the trigger; I'm super particular with used sets, and cheap LOL! But I hope to add it one day! 😍

The mailbox looks so cool! 😍 I don't think I'll get it though as it's so similar. If there had been a bigger gap between the 2 red roof cosy cottages then maybe I would have. The door is really pretty though. Why can't they make a whole new house, change the layout/shape a little instead of just tweaking existing houses?

Does the lighter color of the walls of the 2022 version Cozy Cottage matches the Sweet Raspberry Home when put together? Btw, great video as always

Hello! Yes, the walls of the new cozy cottage are the same color is the other red roof homes, including the raspberry home. Except the railings are lighter on the new cozy cottage. But it still matches very well, I currently have the new cottage stacked on the red roof country home and it looks great. ❤️

@@AdventuresinCritterland I see! Thanks for answering me. I think I'll skip this one and hope for a re-release of the older houses, like they did with the riverside lodge (re-released this year as the Bluebell cottage gift set).

It was so interesting to see these compared side by side. I have the old, old version so haven't gotten either of these newer versions but the downgrade in quality of the furniture across each iteration is very obvious, that new metallic plastic is not very pleasing to the eye at all! The fact the bed doesn't come with pillow or mattress is also disheartening. The house itself has some cute additions, I love the ladder, curved railings and mailbox but losing the shutters is a downgrade, so mixed bag on that one. The fork with the handle makes me irrationally annoyed, just bring back the gripping hands and problem solved 😂 As for the Freya name on the box I saw a post (which I annoyingly now can't remember where) that linked to the new official US website where they have a post about assimilating all the names to be the same worldwide, so all the characters will adopt the Japanese/UK names going forward.

Yes, I agree, there are some upgrades but also some downgrades, but the furniture is definitely a downgrade. Just comparing the ovens side-by-side, or the beds, and you can really tell the difference. I had no idea they were going to combine the names, I think that is really smart, I never understood why they used separate ones! Thank you for sharing that! And yeah, seriously, the giant bulky handle for a fork is overkill, I would much rather have the gripping hands, it’s a shame they stopped that style. 😕

I seen that with the current red roof country home, you can stack this house on top with it so both sides of the country home have 3 stories right? I have the older country home that I got in 2017ish, can this house stack on it or would I have to buy the newer country home?? 🤔

I know this reply is late, but if you are referring to Beechwood Hall (the older folding red roof home with the wraparound terrace), I don’t think you can stack either of these cozy cottages. However, both of these stack on the red roof country home. I know they put out a newer red roof country home with the secret attic, both of these will also stack onto that. So if you have a home that the older cottage stacks onto, you will not need to get another one for the new cottage to fit it. I hope that helps!

Hi Minikoke! It's a tough call, but my favorite is the older one because of the windows (and I like the oven and bed better in the older one). I love the curved railings and mailbox in the newer one though. If it were me and I had neither, I'd probably decide after comparing the prices. LMK what you decide!

hey! the newer one is actually much cheaper and i cant decide either 😭😭im thinking to get the new one cuz of the price difference but i really wish the new one could have a more metal-ish oven and pan and a mattres for the bed. the window doesnt bother me THAT much. so should i get the new one? @@AdventuresinCritterland

Thanks so much for this side by side review! I loved the mailbox on this one but held off because of too many similarities and didn’t even pay attention to the lack of window shutters - that’s a downgrade. The new door is very pretty as are the curved railings. But what a disappointment they’re getting so cheap with the piping detail under the sink! And no mattress? Makes no sense. Ugh - when will they get the message that the furniture is going downhill! I treated myself to the red roof tower instead. I assume since this was a Japan release they kept the name Freya. As if we need more of that bunny in her red dress! Very helpful review!

Personally I think it’s a downgrade as each year the release sets they get cheaper and cheaper quality why cant we have flair quality again and get flair to take over Sylvanian families again like epoch is just getting cheaper and cheaper and I hate it.

Yes! They REALLY spoiled us with the Flair-level quality, and now they're trying to unscramble that egg, but people notice that. Like the cheaper silver plastic, not including mattresses and doing cheap thin blankets, less painted/printed detail, little corners being cut here and there. I'm glad the figures are still amazing (and some sets and some parts of other sets are still good) but as a whole I agree with you. I get excited when they do a "re-release" of an older set, like the carport, or when they use items from older sets in new ones, but it seems like anything "new new" is sub-par.

That is ketchup on the egg! It's a Japanese dish called omurice. It's basically an omelet with fried rice inside and ketchup on top. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omurice
