This deck is so cool! I have a few tiny quibbles about how some of the creatures were translated into Magic, but overall the flavor is great. It does a good job of capturing how the Tyranids are a constantly-growing threat that can go wide with swarms of little bugs or tall with giant monsters, backed up with a surprising array of clever tricks. I especially love how ramp is themed as the Genestealer Cults infecting new recruits and as the Tyranids physically spreading across a planet. Also the reprints are amazing; its super cool to see existing cards we're used to playing with reimagined in the context of another universe.

There’s a lot of nutty cards in these precons, man. It’s nice honestly even if I couldn’t care less for Warhammer. Pyrohemia still seems bonkers with the red terror, yeah you only get 1 counter but that's enough to offset the damage it takes.
@TravvyBear262
@TravvyBear262 Жыл бұрын
I think the best way to get the red terror pumped is sadly just number of sources that ping, so it is not super efficient. Basically a big beater of a commander for a group slug deck, might be more of a 99 card with Kellermorph as the commander with an spell slinger/storm/slug shell.
@Servbot40
@Servbot40 Жыл бұрын
@@TravvyBear262 I'm not saying it would be good, but if Red Terror was in your command zone pyrohemia would be the best card in your 99. Pyrohemia is on the edge of being playable anyway, I have seen it keep the board clear in Norin decks and other than non synergy with that commander it basically kept my token deck out of the game.
@StevenTLawson
@StevenTLawson Жыл бұрын
Pyrohemia + Ghyrson Starn = I pay 1 red mana, everything takes one damage, Starn does 2 more. I pay 1 red mana, everything takes one damage, Starn does two. Repeat until everything is dead so long as Starn has indestructible for the turn, easy enough to do and you have more life than your opponents you win.
@Servbot40
@Servbot40 Жыл бұрын
@@StevenTLawson so you can do the same thing with the red terror and you won't need to get a third card to give it indestructible which is a hard effect to come by in red/blue. The point with the red terror is he will most likely be the only creature to survive your constant board whipes and he can clean up the opponents one by one. Not overpowered but probably good enough in metas that rely on combat to win rather than combo.

argentum armour. stack triggers so genestealer patriarch attacks and puts an infection counter on their biggest/bestest thing, then argentum armour trigger resolves and you kill it, making one for you. I am sure there are more efficient ways of doing it, but thats the first that came to my mind.

I think you're slightly underestimating the Ravenous mechanic, the flexibility of creatures that scale with the game and provide a modest amount of card draw seem very solid for casual play - you can also pivot your strategy. If you have a hand full of these creatures and a way to incrementally grow them like Proliferate then just dump your hand and go wide. If you're close to top decking, your opponents have decent blockers or you're playing against some low power decks you can just play battle-cruiser magic.

I actually really love the X spell defender that grabs lands. I feel people are getting caught up on how expensive it gets later on but missing that its baseline is Farhaven Elf, a card that is still very playable in mid power commander. If you don't have blink synergies it's better since it's a farhaven with upside and in decks like Zaxara and Lucea Kane it's gonna be powerful ramp

Sporocyst seems great. At 3 mana you get a 1/1 and a land ramped out - same rate as Farhaven Elf, a staple. Sure, you can't blink it or reanimate it, but you're not playing it in a blink or reanimate deck, you're playing it in a counters deck, where it does have synergies. And that's just the base rate. It scales perfectly, every extra 2 mana is an extra Rampant Growth - perfectly reasonable rate - that grows your creature as a bonus. Then, as a bonus, it might end up drawing you a card, but that's not really why we're here. It is definitely a shame, though, that The First Tyrannic War couldn't have been worded so that it could interact with the keyword created for the deck, not to mention effects like this that look at the value of X.

Ghyrson Starn in Nekusar is just ridiculous. Each player is taking 3 damage for every card they draw instead of 1. Edit: The Red Terror also seems very strong in Nekusar, since each draw is an instance of one damage which would be a trigger. You would only get the trigger from one player, so a wheel effect would net you around 7 counters instead of 21. Still seems good.

It don’t clone things…. Just imagine the maternity ward scene from alien vs predator with the queen. Only the women survive the experience and are brainwashed into willing going back for more and the patriarch isn’t to picky about age… But ya with games workshop trying to tone down some of the lore to make it more kid friendly… fat chance of that ever happening…. I’m surprised they included this card or that wotc even let them what with the whole mass banning of other problematic cards….

GW aren't really toning down anything, it's always been this way - marketable on the surface with the base grimdark stuff under that and the real nasty stuff elsewhere. It's been that way pretty much since RT, and GW aren't really mellowing out recently, it's just that nowadays a lot of people don't spend the time to actually dig beyond the surface level.

@@BW-CZ they nuked slaannesh from the age of sigmar lore until just very recently cause people were pissed at one faction being wiped out. Or the war hammer adventure books. The books marketed directly to kids that just trampled over 40k lore. Then there was a dry spell where patriarchs and brood lords just wouldn’t appear in 40k lore. All you’d ever get would be basic gene stealers and cultists without any mention of the two actual leaders of the faction. There’s been a few novels where the outright leaders of the infection have just been basic cult psykers…
@BW-CZ
@BW-CZ Жыл бұрын
@@micheal5973 Lol. Yeah, thought this would be the case. This is the problem when you get your information from salty internet discussions rather than the actual sources. Slaanesh wasn't canned from AoS at all in the way you think. The God itself was imprisoned but Slaanesh daemons and followers were all around, actively fighting. They had active roles to play and lore (which now resolved around them saving their god). There wasn't a Slaanesh army book (but then again, it was years before anyone except Khorne got a mono-god book, in typical GW Khorne-favorism), but Slaanesh was still playable in the generic Chaos army. It wasn't people complaining about Slaanesh being gone that caused new Slaanesh, because those people were playing Slaanesh (and the Slaanesh book came out before Cities of Sigmar for example, another faction that was present in lore and playable under a different name). That is pretty much the same cause Imperial Guard has in 40k rn - it's been so many years since they got their last book, but they're still around in the lore, and playable with the older versions. Well that, and the narrative (AoS has actually ongoing narratives) didn't reach that point yet. Slaanesh' plotline was present and set up as early as the original release date of AoS. The Warhammer Adventure books don't trample over anything. You know in the kid book, the Ultramarines all die, the kids spend the entire book running away from a single Necron, and one of them dies? It didn't disrespect any lore in any way. In fact it probably treats it better than most. Yeah, there is very few Patriarch/Broodlord stories. Just like there is very few Xenos stories in general. Or anything that wasn't marines shooting bolters at mindless hordes. Or how even in Horus Heresy the factions don't get equal spotlight. That is a problem, but a different one (40k being Imperium centric). Their lore was still getting reprinted and was/is fully canon. The majority of 40k lore isn't in the novels, it's in the codices and especially campaign books. And after the big Tyranid redesign way back in the day (when the Patriarch/Broodlord stopped being a fat mafia boss as Nids got their proper identity), very few things have changed for our hungry boys. I see this all the time. People are like "Where's my Daemonculaba?! 40k is going soft!!!" but don't realise that was one book (that they usually can't even name), they completely forget we've always had waves and waves of braindead action stories and marketing without any nuance, and then they say things have gotten soft because they refuse to read any codex or campaign books lore. Because people are like "what happened in X" and internet tells them "Y fought Z, pyrrhic victory" but it doesn't mention the rivers of blood or daemons spilling out of everywhere or the sheer horror of some of the stuff. I can guarantee you, 40k is just as grimdark as it has always been. Arguably more, as it takes itself more seriously, and there's more stuff (compare something like the Heroes of the Space Marines stories of old with let's say The Lords of Silence). And yes, of course 40k appeals to kids - vast majority of people involved in 40k, especially us fans and players, got into 40k as kids. That has always been the case and never was an obstacle for the grimdark. In fact, GW was aware of this since day 1, as they already knew kids were a portion of their customers before they even started making 40k.

@@BW-CZ do you honestly think looking back at the first edition of aos that gw had any intention of putting slaanesh back into the game in any meaningful way??? Do I need to list off the childish kid rules that that cluster f of a game had? From trying to make your opponent smile to shouting for the lady and taking a swig from a goblet those were all mechanics in the original aos and just the tip of them. Now is there a reason slaanesh was in a time out cause gw didn’t want to think of any rules for her army that would be like bend your opponent over the table. And now are only bringing her back fully after the game got the massive rework? Warhammer adventures. The one ten whatever year old modifying and tinkering with Xenos tech and not getting a bolt round to the skull sure not against the lore. Or the one person with guns are bad! In the middle of a post apocalyptic galactic war…. And ya Tyranid and gene stealer books are few and far between. Hell the last one that came out had a young teen being a genestealer being escorted off planet while smiling and rubbing her tummy to start up a new brood as the planet was falling. But the big bad action astartes arriving and shooting everything up you’d think that any book with them arriving on an infected world would have to end with them somehow dealing with the patriarch. And you know big action scene of taking down the final boss or just nuking it without getting into the nitty gritty of what the patriarch actually does. But no most of the time it never shows up in a war where to end the infection it has to die or it will just go to ground somewhere els and start up a new brood. Now I’m not saying they have to make wh a hard r rating, and it has gotten better over the last few years, but there was a point where they wouldn’t mention certain charecters just cause they didn’t want the baggage that their lore came with. Just the fact that gene stealer cults now have so many named charecters when they are just essentially zombies that as soon as the hive fleet arrives are all going to get eaten and turned into proper Tyranids and will never appear on more than one planet should be ample proof of that.

@@micheal5973 GW didn't need to have the intention of bringing back Slaanesh in first edition... because Slaanesh WAS THERE. Slaanesh was playable in first edition, just how other armies that didn't have their own battletomes (you know... everyone, at first) were playable. Now, sure, 1st edition was a mess ruleswise, but that's not relevant to this. As a side note, "bend over" is the least Slaanesh rule ever. It's not a god of sex, it's a god of excess, and there's an important difference. Because there wasn't anyone to put that bolt through the head? And you do realise that working with xenotech is possible, there's several Imperial factions that do so, inluding AdMech itself. And more importantly, most people can't even tell something is of xenos origin. So, is it illegal? Yes. Is it possible to get away with? Also yes. Many characters have done so, imperial security against heresy is not great (as all the various cults might give away), that's a core story element of 40k. Yes, that's exactly what I expect a Patriarch to do? Why would it EVER engage in open combat outside a Hive Fleet invasion? That's like expecting a sniper to charge a tank. Patriarch's sole role is to establish and lead Cults. There's a reason it originally was a fat dude and even nowadays they work from the background. That's their entire point. Cult falls? Get away and found a new one. A Patriarch story ending with a fight would be incredibly silly. Their danger is in them being insidious and hard to root out, you'd be making them look like idiots, the exact opposite of what they're supposed to be doing. Also, GSC are not zombies and never were. That would once again make them pointless for the Hive Mind. They had characters in the background (going as far as the.. infamous first 40k novel ever), they're a cult. The Brood Mind "mindcontrol" does not supress individuality or skill, just secures loyalty. Otherwise the cultists would be useless, the Hive Mind doesn't need mindless grunts, it needs efficient asymmetrical warfare combatants. I really struggle to find or remember a period when 40k was getting less dark. There are periods when some things didn't get mentioned but not because it'd be forbidden (well Squats were an exception to thus on the forums a bit) but because 40k didn't always release all faction codices every edition. But just because something doesn't get reprinted/updated doesn't mean it stops being canon. Lot of 40k fundamentals on which the setting stands on haven't got updated since like 3rd edition. And sometimes they come back - like how Malice (not to confuse with Malal) wasn't talked about for ages and then got rules in Horus Heresy, for example. You touched on many serious criticisms. AoS 1st edition being an awful rule system, GW Space Marine favoritism, long release schedules, etc. Those are indeed all problems. But 40k "going soft" or "catering to children nowadays" or anything of that sort is just not true and never was.
