New Chickens given a better life

Today we got 5 Barred Rocks from a Mennonite family and we were given 2 for free that were deemed unfit to sell. We thought we could give them a better life than the state of what they were living in.
We use Apple Cider Vinegar in the water and added garlic to help boost immune systems. The food we use now is organic with increased calcium and protein.

Little brother.....mom would be so proud of you and I just know she’s smiling while watching all you’ve done with the land. Those chickens have hit the jackpot with you! Lauren told us you had some new videos up so KAREEM and I made a cup of coffee and got caught up. We had such a blast on our visit and are already making plans to come back. 🥰🥰🥰 and I am loving seeing dad in your videos. 😘🥰

Lily Mac I hope so. It is hard to tel from the video because I had to use my phone, but their last place was so dirty and the smell almost unbearable. They’re still working out the pecking order with our golden comets but it’ll work out. Cheers

Holy shit dude. That music is haunting. This was like the chicken version of the shelter dog commercial with the Sarah McLachlan song. Good on you for blessing those hens. Seeing them take their first steps on grass broke me

Thank you. They have all settled down and seem to really enjoy it. They aren't running for their lives when I go out there anymore and they seem to really like the coop. Getting eggs on day two and now all are laying. Either way, I just want them to have an awesome place to live. Now I just want more!

I have seen a other farmer having a goose with the Chickens he had said it helps to protect them from preditors

I am totally and seriously looking into that RIGHT NOW! I think it would be great to have a goose running around, and especially one that has a job. That may be an addition this summer. Cheers!

Your roost bar should be higher it’s down by the nest boxes where they will learn to sleep and poop in the nest boxes

Thank you for the advice. I have changed out the roosts and made them much higher and added multiples so they can spread out and enjoy that pecking order. Ended up using natural thick branches I cleaned and installed with blocks on the walls. They seem to like those much much better. Cheers!

thanks for helping out those chickens. It's sad when animals are not taken care of. Shouldn't they have been quarantined for a month before introduction to your flock tho? I worry about diseases.

How are the chickens making out? Did the two hens start laying once they acclimated to a better life?

One of the Hens ended up doing very well but, unfortunately the really small hen had already acquired a respiratory infection and couldn't be resolved with medication or treatment of any kind and She didn't survive more than a few weeks. It wasn't an easy experience but We did everything we could to make Her as comfortable as possible. Animal husbandry can be an emotional process sometimes. Cheers
