Great vid. Just a little bit of advise on when you're trying to put a mini into the holder. Try putting one side of the mini's base into the required lip first and using the mini to pull that side open, and your other hand to pull the opposite side (if that makes sense). It makes mounting the mini much easier as you only have to worry about one side popping into the holder. That's the best way I found to do it anyway.

Ignoring the questionable shape, the new painting handle seems to have a better weight distribution, so that it is no longer prone to falling over. Also, the miniatures on the handle are more accessible because top top part is much smaller now. Maybe i will get one, but i wont replace all the ones i already have.

Lower centre of mass, reduced materials so it's lighter, less of the handle in the way when you're painting from a lower angle. It looks like an improvement on paper, I'd have to hold it to know how it feels to use though since that's really 90% of what matters. The reason it may be difficult to get the larger bases in is that because it's new, so the spring may be stiffer. Getting 40mm bases in my painting handle is still a nightmare since I rarely use it.

Best painting handle I ever used, a couple of bits of stuff wire with crocodile clips on the end, twist them together and if you're feeling fancy stick the non clippy ends into a cork and jobs a good'un (I made that ages ago because I find paining models in their bases annoying so I just glue a bit of sprue across between the fit and clip on to that, or if they're on slotter bases, just clip on to the bar!)
@power_SERG3 жыл бұрын
This is the kind of thing that you gotta explain to people what it does before you show them.
Looks a lot cheaper to make, which is probably why they made it. I can't speak though, as I use old camera film canisters with ballast in the bottom.
@stephenkerr97023 жыл бұрын
It is just a cost saving on GW's part. From an engineering point of view less material is less production cost. It is essentially just value engineering on the production.
@sadlerbw93 жыл бұрын
Agreed. This is absolutely a cost-reduced version. When she unscrewed the ‘old’ one, you could see the embedded screw and nut, plus two metal guide bars (that appeared to be chrome plated) and springs. The ‘new’ one appears to have gotten rid of virtually all the metal parts. The jaws appear to slide on plastic rails and use a rubber band for tension. I did see one screw inside when the jaws were pulled apart, but it may very well just drive into the plastic, and not have a nut embedded in the stem. Also, this one goes up your butt way easier.

I feel it's too small for comfort during longer painting sessions. I like the stability improvements. The overall shape is unfortunate; I feel GW should have known better.
@EasilyDistractedPlanner3 жыл бұрын
It's not just the shape itself, but in some of the early promotional material, they had some 'smoke' swirling around it and if you saw just a glimpse of it quickly, it would appear that it didn't have a flat bottom but would come to a point because of the swirling smoke... that was... very unfortunate and also seemed to be the idea at the same time?
@tristanellis-mascoll11713 жыл бұрын
Nice video you made there. Since its more based than the older one seems to be a very good improvement. But the new shape might be designed for smaller hands to grab it. I have larger hands myself, so I dont have any trouble. But seeing my son holding the handle, it seems to be "to big". Maybe I get him one of these. As for the removeable top: Well they never put it to use to sell different tops for your handle, that made it obsolete and they removed it. (if you hadnt told me I still would not know about it)

For oval bases I've been sticking the miniature to a 40mm round base with a tiny spot of superglue. Once painted the model can be rebased to the oval one. If you use polystyrene cement rather than superglue it's going to be a pain to remove as the plastics melt to fuse together.

It seems like you are trying to make loading the handle way more difficult by trying to balance the model on top of the handle and then have it fall into place. Surely it would be easier to keep even one finger on the model so that you could apply a little downward pressure to keep contact with the handle and then push the model into the wedge. Small hands doesn't seem to be the issue, because there isn't room for all ten fingers to be involved in opening the handle top. And in most shots your index fingers are not being used, so you could use those to help steady and guide the model.

@CoenusOfPolemocrates3 жыл бұрын
I notice you appear to mainly hold the figures near the top while painting, which means the handle's shape will have a limited impact, and the reduced weight will make the new one preferable. I wonder how well the grip of the smaller, rounder design will impact holding it lower down however, and the slimness may well lead to cramped up hands during longer painting sessions. Maybe. Not sure if the new one is an improvement in that sense, although it's good to see the balance is actually better. Maybe the reduced width at the top will occasionally help reach some places, though the mini's base probably gets in the way before the handle.
