Hi Marc, the gradient map trick at around 5:42 don't work for me. When making gradient maps go from for example: Deep, midtones, highlights... And i pick for these black, blue and orange respectively, it just turns the image a perfect blend between them.

1:43 to 3:19 is just magic. I don’t understand how it happens. I watch it happen but definitely magic. It just goes from 2D to 3D. I can never get to that painting stage. My art needs the lineart to keep the form but shading like this is the goal!! Gotta find your class on it and keep practicing

My two tips are 1) learn basic human anatomy so you know where most prominent muscles are and where they go. 2) Try using half brush(idk what's better name for it but notice the shape of brush he's using from 1:39 onnward). You can create your own brush like this from just creating a dot with soft brush and cut it in half. Trust me, this shape of brush helps IMMENSELY in shading

For months i watched asian illustrators doing this but only timelapses Now i finally understand. Thank you a lot I will learn this. I always struggle with coloring with brushes and texture but i consider i'm good on grayscale. Some artits say that this method split the color stage from the composition and this is unnatural but i love to watch these method. Thanks for contributing to the community. Your work is amazing.

Your previous videos about grayscale to color helped so much that I stick to that method until today. It made my process super easy. Without having to focus too much on color and values at the same time, instead I start with values and followed the other steps along the way. Always so helpful, sir Marc!!

Thanks this helped a lot! I immediately followed the tutorial and the coloring just really *popped*. As a comic artist, this method was pretty new to me, but I certainly learned a lot! Some parts of this process I'll apply to future Illustrations, that's for sure. It'd be difficult for my comic, though. What I found out about gradient maps through this tutorial is that they almost instantly add a customizable primary light and secondary light- which will cut a good bit of time out of the rendering process for me. I'll have to experiment with this method a bit more because some parts of the process felt awkward for my workflow, but yeah other than that, thanks again! your 1st coloring tutorial helped immensely, and this one helped all the same!

I love this process. I actually learned it during the full course in cubebrush from Marc, this video simply streamlines and simplifies the explanation of the whole process really well. If there is anything to add, is that personally I do the basic tones BEFORE adding the grayscales shadows. Quite simply because it allows me to "select areas" by selecting the gamut color, allowing me to "switch" between character areas and shade them more easily. That's using CSP though, and i've yet to master saving and locking mask selections, which would probably help me further. Either way the process is kind of the same, and very effective!

Super cool to see an update on this. I had used an older video of yours that utilized gradient maps, and while they're finicky to work with when you're not great with color or not used to using them, once you do they're so handy for fixing colors and trying out different colors. As someone that is better at grayscale than colors, it's an indispensable tool for messing with and learning to work with colors. So yeah, thanks for the update on this method.

Goldmine tutorial! Also I just purchased the full ART School program and I was surprised to find how much core content Marc has already released on his YT completely free. I say this not to deter others from purchasing, but to point out how extremely generous this man is with sharing his knowledge and making digital art accessible! The program is great for beginners to develop fundamentals. I probably didn't need to buy the whole package, as I jumped straight into Term 8. But I don't mind considering my purchase as a tip to thank Marc for helping me (and so many others) over the years. TY sensei ^0^
