We welcome writer and Marxist thinker Richard Seymour back onto the show for a spirited discussion on new currents in Marxist thinking. In this wide-ranging conversation, we discuss the contradictions and tensions between the concept of "degrowth communism", coined by eco-socialist thinker Kohei Saito, to another trend in Marxist and socialist thinking which is encapsulated by the name of "neo-Kautskyism", or the general tendency for a more productivist and working-class organized direction of socialist politics. We also discuss the legacy of Althusserian Marxism, class politics, the PMC debate and quagmire as well as Richard's intellectual trajectory, idealism and materialism and faith and spirituality.

This was fantastic. More of the Daniel and Richard Show please. These overviews of philosophical and left intersections, problems, and lines of enquiry are essential.

Richard's insight that the idea of communism is a form of idealism is really insightful, and jolted me back in my chair when he said that. I'm not sure what to think about that.

I haven't finished watching yet, but I didn't want to lose this point: The inherently idealist orientation of dialectical materialism(DM). Having been a lover of virtue ethics, mostly through the Stoic lense, before encountering DM, and recognizing that the very study of ethics is a utopian one, it was the Virtue ethicists who said "the best way to improve the world is to show up better in thought and deed", and how to develop the tools for such inward growth becomes the primary goal with which the public can find redemption in themselves that helps them mold the physical world and its game dynamics in a way that is helpful to everyone. "The ideal" is a north star, the route there an infinite goal, flexible to the obstacles in its path with a horizonal goal that can rally people. Much of the desire to strip utopian thinking comes in two forms: the breaking of the "flowers covering the chains", and the failings of emotivism, which captured moral arguments in the 20th century as "real politik" turned moral discussions into egoistic manipulation, and how that soured the pool which moral utopian teleologies grew out of--and how what previously nurtured our sense of justice became viewed as a manipulation itself. The Stoic Musonius Rufus said we're all born with a seed of virtue, a conception of Justice that can be nurtured, or not. Darcia Narvaez's work on "The Evolved Human Nest theory" (her presentation on youtube about this is great) shows that humans raised in a tribe, with lower cortisol during development from being constantly worn on the body, fed by multiple nursing mothers, safe, raised in an environment of people and nature who are all raised that way, creates a social animal nest that we as humans today are far removed of. She says its like only knowing a red cedar as a potted plant, disconnected from what brings about our prosocial creative powers and mutual trust. That this is an ideal we'd find naturally with material conditions necessary to us, shows a naturally born teleology towards virtue and justice that we will have to be harbingers of if we want to win a cultural narrative that leads to the healthiest humans. The fact that systems win or lose public opinion by the merits of the individuals involved, speaks not to hero worship or "great man" theories and worship, but to our natural human disposition to hold virtue in rational and prosocial thinking and action as what is most natural to us. It is the call of The Nest, and it is a school of love and care. It is more interested in care than stuff. And we will need it before we can replace the "stuff" as a fill in goal in our disconnection and alienation.

Why can’t consciousness be immanent to matter? In the manner similar to Ilyenkov’s cosmology of spirit? It appears that at around 49:00 Richard falls victim to something that Feuerbach would respond, “Ok, show me the emergence of matter from spirit.” Other than that, his criticisms of Althusser is spot on

Well, Richard can respond to Feuerbach that matter is nothing that energy and energy can´t be destroyed. If conciousness then is inmanent to matter, when matter disolves the only thing left is conciousness. That is, matter is accidental while conciousness is not

20:13 This is Isabel Millar's *Patipolitics* _A suffering which in psychoanalytic terms appears as jouissance. A deadly enjoyment that demands satisfaction yet cannot be sated-from the Latin patior- to suffer. Which for psychoanalysis, as we know, is also to enjoy._

Growth of humanity is the key empathy love for your fellow human beings. The eliminating of greed and materialistic accumulation of objects (big car big house 2,000 dollar suits all the latest gadgets)etc. We need to save our planet,we live in a planet with finite resources that need to disturbed in a equitable manner that will be benefit us all not only the rich and powerful. This can happen only with a highten class conscience that will result in the seizing of the means of production. Then the surplus value to used for our benefit, investi g in green technologies immediately if your home is clean then we can tackle all other issues.Cooperatives at work participating in the decision making that relies less on the bottom line more on our community needs educating our children with the values of giving back to the society less on the culture of greed.

Bernie Sanders has collapsed in the USA? I don't think he has ever been more popular, especially among the young. Progressives have always been a minority within in the Democratic Party. New stars like AOC make me optimistic about the progressive movement in the USA.

all marxists lean heavily on over complicating everyday language to confuse people. They speak with exoteric and esoteric meanings all the time, ...beware of these jokers as the end goal for them is the opposite of what they speak of, the end goal for them is the liquidation of all those who do not agree with them. Please listen to New Discourses with James Lindsay Good luck
