I'm testing the NEW DeWalt 60V Chainsaw DCCS677 - the good, the bad and comparisons against two Stihl gas chainsaws, one entry model and one professional mid-range model.
Btw: there are two Oregon saw chains which fit the ORIGINAL 20" bar the saw comes with. CONFIRMED: 91PX068G (AdvanceCut low kickback) and 91VXL068G (NOT a low kickback chain but cuts a little faster).

Overall: a great electric chainsaw with great safety features, awesome performance and amazing torque. I used mine last week to cut up a large walnut tree over 3 days. I have the 20" and the 16" saws, as well as 10 of the 9ah batteries and 1 of the 15ah batteries. The 20" has a lot of power, but it constantly overheats the batteries where you don't even get a chance to use all the charge. My 16" Dewalt clearly spins at a much faster rpm and doesn't have any of the overheating issues and it also noticeably cut through the walnut much faster. I also noticed the 20" saw uses about half as much oil as my 16" and was clearly a problem as the bar and chain became very hot to the point the chain would stretch. Also, yes the chain was sharp, the oil passages were not plugged, and neither saw ran out of oil. It definitely needs to pump bar oil much faster or it won't last very long under heavy use. I almost bet they used the same pump as the 16", but due to the lower RPM of the 20" saw it pumps proportionally less oil because of it.
@CascadesHomestead
@CascadesHomestead 11 ай бұрын
Hi MQ - have you tried using a thinner oil which might pump easier? During the winter when it gets cold up in the mountains our regular bar oil (Oregon 54-059) gets super thick and won't pump - then we switch to Stihl Winter Grade oil which is a lot thinner. You may want to try a lighter oil, maybe just experiment with a quart of lighter engine oil before buying a big gallon of bar oil.

The 91VXL068G and 91PX068G chains will work. Oregon 91 is a 3/8"LP .050 gauge, which is what the OE chain is as well. The PX is the AdvanceCut line, safety chain with chamfer chisel cutters. The VXL is their VersaCut line, NON-safety and larger blued semi-chisel cutters. The VXL is going to give you a bump in performance and longevity, but not being a low-kickback safety chain, I would not recommend for the average user. So go with the 91PX068G.

@bryantitus6634

The ms250/251 comes with a .325 chain setup because it really doesn't have the stones to pull full size 3/8. With a .325 bar and chain setup, it would have been far closer to the DeWalt. I'm not saying it would beat it because it very likely still would have been a few seconds slower, but not 20 seconds slower.

Not unless you replace the drive sprocket which is geared for 3/8 low profile (LP), since there are no 3/8 LP chains longer than 20". I don't think DeWalt (or anybody else) makes replacement sprockets that work with say .325 chains etc. But the supply chain situation with the 20" 3/8 low profile chains is getting better, there are two working replacement chains, please check out this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mNdmY8Kqm9fZiWw.html

@CascadesHomestead

I think it would cut faster but you can't run the larger chains on that sprocket. And I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement sprocket. So for now I use the 91VXL068G chain, works great and the kickback is manageable. YMMV :)

Strictly personal opinion: the 15 amp battery adds another 1/2 HP or so but I don't think it's worth it. I mostly use my 12 amp batteries and they are just fine in this saw. Depending on wood hardness, log diameter etc. I get anywhere from 15 - 35 full log cuts out of the 12 amps. So with three of these batts I go all afternoon.

The reason for not transporting batteries in the saw, or any Flex Volt tool is the voltage and ability to short and start a fire. DeWalt FlexVolt batteries should always be transported with the red transport covers on the batteries as when the cover is locked on the 60V connectors are interrupted limiting the voltage to the 3P5S, or 6P5S configuration, thus about 20V. 60V wouldn’t seem that dangerous but it is enough to start a fire of there is a collision or even with quick/sudden movements as the connections are quit.e close relative to other 40v+ batteries; this is needed to ensure the batteries can function in 20V as well as 60V tools.

I bought this saw after seeing your review. It is the DCCS677Y1 that came with the 12 AH flexvolt. I found on the Dewalt website that the 15 amp hour battery it will increase the horsepower by just a little but thinking that extra power will reduce the run time on the 15 AH to make it feel like a 12AH but alittle more zip. Does it seem to last about as long with the 15 amp hour compared to the 12 amp hour? After a few days of good luck with usability of this saw I am deciding whether or not to buy (2) more 12 AH Flexvolts for $245 each or if I should Spend the $375 for (1) 15 AH battery.
@CascadesHomestead
@CascadesHomestead Жыл бұрын
Strictly my personal opinion: I would go for the two 12 AH batteries (24 AH total) instead of one 15 AH battery. Plus the 15 AH overheats after heavy sawing, with the two 12 AH you can always pop in another one. Of course it depends on your usage patterns as well.
@marcowens3522
@marcowens3522 Жыл бұрын
I would get the kit with the 15amp battery why because the saw alone is $380 with the 15ah battery you only pay an extra $165. Which is a deal that's a $380 battery. With that said if you got another 15ah battery for$380 you would be had $545 in 2 15ah batterys.

@CascadesHomestead
@CascadesHomestead Жыл бұрын
@@experienceprecision5406 have you tried the $99 gas saws? They are TERRIBLE! Now I do like my Stihls but a nice professional model will set you back $700-$800 (worth it though). My main reasons for a battery saw are: it's ready when you need it, no mixing gas, no "won't start" in the middle of a storm, no gas smell inside the truck (we always carry a saw in the truck in the winter since we live out in the woods) and we re-use the batteries with our other DeWalt tools. I've also used the battery saws quite a bit in construction work, mostly inside - you wouldn't want to use a gas saw there. I agree, battery saws aren't for everybody but there are some good use cases. We have a mix of both: a large Stihl gas saw for the big trunks and some DeWalt battery saws for the medium-sized stuff and the clean-up work.
