Hi Marcel & Libby. Another excellent video, thanks for this. I recently acquired the X6, and I want to love it, but it ate through 3 pairs of double A batteries in the first 2 hours of use. I wasn't even recording anything, just browsing menus and getting a feel for it. No plugin power was on or phantom power in use either. I ensured that the correct battery type was selected In the menu, and this didn't improve things particularly either. I've also noted that, even when fresh batteries or freshly recharged batteries are added, it never says I have 100% battery power on the icon at the top right of the screen. As someone with a bit of OCD, this drives me absolutely insane. The most power I ever had on the unit was around two thirds of the power bar, irrespective of the type of battery used. I've found it to drain batteries like nothing I have ever encountered before. I seem to have been able to mitigate this by lowering screen brightness to its absolute lowest setting and removing absolutely everything and anything that could impact power usage. This seems to have improved the draining issue, but I still never have 100% battery power according to the icon. Have you experienced any of these issues at all with this unit? I'd love to try and establish if this is just me or potentially a faulty unit, or if this is something that is fairly common? Reviews I've seen say the battery life is good. I wasn't expecting anything sensational, but compared to my other 3 recorders (Sony A10, Roland R05 & Tascam DR100mkiii) it is falling waaaayyy behind on power.

Hi there! That's quite interesting to hear, especially since you're now the second person to mention something about the battery life. Personally, I've been able to run the unit on a full battery for an entire night during my overnight recordings, using Ladda batteries from IKEA. So far, I haven't encountered any issues with battery drainage. However, it definitely sounds like something worth looking into further on your end. I'd recommend reaching out to TASCAM or the retailer where you purchased the unit. A good approach could be to do a time-lapse test with a visible clock. Record both with and without phantom power (pp), and monitor the battery drain rate. If you notice an unusually rapid battery drain, like in your case, it might be a sign that your unit needs to be replaced. Hope this helps, and you get to the bottom of the issue soon!

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking into the last few days, what a coincidence. What’s your thought on buying a zoom f3 over the Tascam x6? I it worth for better preamps? There are fairly compact kits for the f3 like the pluggy em 272 for example, for not much more money (or something like the line audio cm4, with higher budget then) So I’m wondering which one to choose, futureproofing in mind. Would be nice to hear you’re thoughts :)
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 8 ай бұрын
The end decision is of course yours but from my experience I would go for the Tascam X6 over the F3, especially considering they're similarly priced. With the X6, you're set to start recording right away, though it's true that you'll need to purchase wind protection separately, which is a bit of a downside. If you opt for the F3 and plan to use external microphones like the Line Audios, remember it's not just about the mics. You'll also need to invest in additional equipment such as either a tripod, a light stand with an AB bar, extra wind protection, and additional XLR cables. While the Clippy microphones are decent, they'll add at least another $150 to your expenses, plus wind protection. In terms of cost-effectiveness, starting with the X6 could make more sense. Plus, for just $100 more, you could get the X8.

Wow, thank you so much for the detailed response! You‘re right, that makes more sense! I was somehow put off the X8 due too the issues at launch, but I heard they maybe fixed it. If they are fixed it would definitely be worth buying it because of the detachable microphone and two more xlr inputs alone. Did you hear from newer units if there are still problems? And do you think there is an audible difference between the x6 and x8? Thanks again for you’re help, appreciate it a lot!

Two comments: 1. Never heard sheep eat before. hehe. Incredible! The breathing and chewing, right? 2. The DJI Mic 2 sounds great but absolutely no substitute when it come to non voice audio. The Tascam X6 brings everything to life. That was beautiful. :) This is exactly why I bought the Pocket 3. Simple/easy/no worry beautiful video..to pair with my Sony PCM-M10 and PCM-A10. Thanks for the video #freetousesounds

Thank you for bringing this up! Good point about lavalier mics, however their main strength lies in being close enough to record clear voice audio while keeping that background ambience at bay. Imagine dealing with all the ambient sounds in challenging environments, like bustling city scenes or dense rainforests. It would be quite a task for sound engineers to clean that up, wouldn’t it? In film and documentary work, ADR is often the go-to technique to fix audio issues, but I have to say, the directional recordings of the DJI Mic has left us quite impressed. It's incredibly useful for getting that focused audio on location. This kind of tech advancement in this price range can be a real game-changer for creators who want reliable audio in the midst of complex sound environments.

@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 7 ай бұрын
Let's break this down because there's a lot to consider. First and foremost, I'm curious about your mode of travel. Are you planning to travel by plane, or will it be a different mode of transportation? Also, it's important to discuss the gear you'll be bringing. Are we talking about a simple handheld recorder, or do you have a full setup in mind? It would be helpful if you could specify the equipment you intend to use for recording audio. Moreover, choosing backpacks is a highly personal decision. While I could suggest some options, it’s important to remember that factors like strap comfort and design vary greatly from person to person. If you’re planning a visit to a store like REI, your personal preference will play a big role in your choice. However, once you let me know about the gear you're planning to bring, I might be able to offer some more tailored suggestions.

@@FreeToUseSounds thanks for the reply, as for myself, I have an REI backpack that I am using but I feel it’s too flimsy and not ridged enough to care for my equipment. Right now I want to carry my M5 matched pair, my zoom H6, my Zoom F3, my new rode NTG 4, cables , headphones, tripod, an if possible my MacBook. I could put them all in the cases I have for them and load up the backpack but what sparked my search is my new Rode Blimp.. very cool piece of gear but very fragile.. so I’m looking for a backpack to get to my recording locations, it could be walking around town. Or hopefully small hikes to some remote locations. But my biggest concern is the blimp… any recommendations? On a serious side note.. you are my inspiration for getting into this hobby, I have been so very inspired by your work. I bought a zoom H1n about 2 years ago.. then found your video on how you got started.. I don’t think I have been more inspired by a KZfaq video in my life. So thank you!! @@The-OutdoorDad First off, thank you so much for your kind words! It's incredibly rewarding to hear that our work has inspired your journey into field recording. Knowing that our videos have had such a positive impact is truly heartwarming. Regarding the backpack issue, I completely understand your concern. About two years ago, I walked the Camino Francés, a 28-day through-hike in Spain. I carried a lot of gear, including the Rycote Cyclone and Schoeps Microphone, essentially a DMS kit with the MixPre, cables, headphones, etc. We even made a video titled "Packing for Camino Francés: What's Left in My Backpack After the Walk," and the backpack I used was amazing. I always packed the Cyclone last, on top of my clothing and gear, to avoid creating any pressure on it. Sometimes, I strapped it outside for easier access. If you're not using the microphones, you could even fill the blimp with socks and underwear to protect it from external pressure, though this is only practical if you know you won't be recording for hours. Having the right backpack is really challenging because of the weight distribution and limited space. For shorter day hikes, a photography bag works well because of the separation options. However, considering the skyrocketing prices for such bags, it's quite a decision. I bought a Minaal bag, but it's a bit too thin, albeit super lightweight. I might opt for the Peak Design Travel Bag with a 35-liter capacity and see how that goes.

Hello Marcel and Libby. I have a question about the Tascam X6. I am currently using Zoom H6 (XY capsule and external condenser microphones in ORTF configuration). How do you rate the built-in Tascam XY microphones compared to the Zoom H6 XY? Are they more sensitive than zoom? And are the Tascam preamps are less noisy than the Zoom H6 preamps? In short, is replacing the zoom h6 with a tascam x6 or x8 a good idea? Great video, best regards!
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 8 ай бұрын
Hi! If you're recording for personal use and aren't overly concerned about a bit of noise, the Zoom H6 is still a great recorder. However, if you're looking for the benefits of 32-bit and want a lower noise floor in general upgrading from the H6 can make a significant difference for your recordings. I do remember the capsules on the H6 are much more robust compared to the X6 or X8.

Do you think the built-in mics of the Tascam X6 (or X8) sound as good or better than the D100's? In terms of both noise performance and frequency response/general sonic quality. It's very hard to find an answer on this topic, and I know you own both recorders! Thanks 🙏🏻
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 8 ай бұрын
Hi Matthew! Oh, the microphones on the Sony PCM D100 are truly superior, and I haven't yet come across another handheld recorder that matches its quality. Perhaps the Marantz is a contender? It's also a bit of a dinosaur but a classic among handheld field recording devices. That said, the noise performance and preamps of the Tascam recorder are quite good, especially considering its price point. We're actually heading to Taiwan soon and plan to make a side-by-side comparison video with the PCM D100. We've been waiting for the right opportunity to film in an exciting new location, and Taipei seems like the perfect place for this. Stay tuned!

Hi, I’m new to microphone and recording gear. With your vast experience across many manufacturers, can you recommend a microphone for nature recordings that can be mounted on a camera but doesn’t pick up the noise from the camera’s built-in fan?
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 7 ай бұрын
Hi! Which camera are you using that produces fan noise? Most modern cameras use passive cooling systems, so we've never encountered this issue with our cameras. However, no microphone can completely ignore noise when it's audible. We recommend a directional microphone to minimize sounds from the rear. Also, when recording nature sounds, are you looking to capture the overall ambiance, or do you want to focus on more directional sounds, like those from a cicada or a bird? A soft hum can often be removed in post-production, but this can reduce audio quality. If you're truly concerned about sound quality, an external recorder is a better choice to avoid these issues.
@abavariannormiepleb9470
@abavariannormiepleb9470 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for responding to me. The mic would be for a first revision Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k where a fan is unfortunately always on. Animals don’t mind the noise but obviously the camera’s internal mics pick it up. Got a cage for the camera so mounting options can vary. The mic should be highly directional for “targeting”, maybe even two for a real stereo experience. Ambient sound is done with a separate audio recorder (the Tascam x8, got a great deal recently and am kind of curious if the high-frequency noise you mentioned is actually gone in a recent model)..
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 7 ай бұрын
@@abavariannormiepleb9470 Ohhh, this is a classic. Hmm, I would say the Sennheiser MKH 416 is your go-to mic, but it's expensive, so any directional shotgun microphone with the capsule far away from the camera housing could work. A cheaper alternative is the MKE 600. Keep in mind you want wind protection too. Using two microphones might look a bit odd, so you might consider the Audio-Technica BP4027 and BP4029 Stereo Shotgun Microphones, or the Sennheiser MKE 440, which we've used. However, it might not be long enough for your needs. Another amazing option is the Sennheiser MKH 418-S, but again, this one will cost you a lot. I got a second X8 unit without the noise issue.

If I had the dji mic 2 with deadcat attached, what would be the main difference between using it vs the tascam?

Hi! Are you talking about the X6 or any other Tascam Lavalier Mic.

@FreeToUseSounds ah sorry yes, I meant the x6. Does it record differently spatially than the dji mic 2 (or similar such as rode wireless)
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 8 ай бұрын
@@BMadPhoto That's a really interesting question and something worth trying out. I just looked at the polar pattern, and it indicates that it's omnidirectional. Using two and separating them in an AB format could be an intriguing experiment. However, if you use only one mic compared to stereo recordings, the sound and ambiance are quite different and audible. For instance, if you watch the scene where I'm in the rice field, the separation of the DJI Mic is really good, and that's without any work on the audio. Then, switching to the stereo format of the X6, the difference is quite significant. We will be waiting and purchase the new pair of transmitters as soon as they are released and try this out.

Hi I have a question. I tried connecting my tascam x8 using line-out cable to Pocket 3 because I have the sonic presence sp15pro connected to Tascam X8 xlr connections. I found that the audio is not separated, like they combined the stereo sounds into both channels so it doesn't have the surround effects at all. I tried doing same thing with my Sony A7s3 and it works great. Can you please try to see if it's the same for you, I would love to know if it's my fault or not? Thanks you for always making great contents🙏
@FreeToUseSounds

So, if I understand you correctly, you attached the DJI to the Tascam and your binaural microphones to the transmitter? The transmitter itself is only mono, and now you feed a stereo signal from the microphones into the transmitter, which then sends the mono signal to the Tascam. Is this what you do or did I miss something?

@@FreeToUseSounds Hi Thank you so much for taking the time to reply 🙏. I used the USB-C to trs dongle (I tried both trrs and trs dongle) to connect the line-out from Tascam x8 to Pocket 3 directly. The sound signal on Pocket 3 is stereo but it's not separate channel stereo. If I were to connect the Tascam x8 line out to my Sony A7s3 the stereo sounds works as it should no problem unlike the Pocket 3. So I was wondering if you can pls tried to connect the Tascam directly the Pocket 3 see if it gives you separate channels stereo sounds? Thank you in advance 🙏

@@MettameowChannel I hope it works for you too :) I just tested using the USB-C cable that comes with the Osmo, connecting it to the USB-C ports of both the Tascam and the Osmo. Did you notice that when you do this, the option for directional audio disappears, and you're able to adjust the gain on the Osmo? You can also see the audio levels on the Osmo's screen. So, if you're looking to record audio directly from the Tascam to the Osmo, it definitely works with a USB-C to USB-C cable. Oh I used the X6. I don't have the X8 right now.

I have the Osmo pocket one, so decent quality only downfall is that I can’t zoom in or out with it. Something unrelated, but we’re your videos about motion array taken down? I’ve been trying to find them to see how you inserted silence between sound effects.
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 8 ай бұрын
Hello Peter, Yes, we decided to take those videos down as they weren't performing as well as our other content on the channel. But no worries, I'm here to help you out with that. Do you use Reaper? If not, I recommend downloading the Reaper DAW along with the Reaper SWS / S&M Extension. Once you have these, navigate to the Action List within Reaper and look for the Xenakios/SWS extension that allows for 'Reposition items'. It's a super handy tool. By selecting all sound effects, you can easily create a one-second silence between all files in no time. I hope this tip is useful to you!

@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks for the reply, yes I’ve been using reaper for a few years now. I like it for its flexibility and it’s simplicity. Ever since I saw your videos on motions array I’ve kind of been tossing the idea back and forth. I can do everything else with my sounds, I just needed to know the extension or shortcut you used. Again thanks!

I’m new to the world of sound so forgive me if this is an obvious question. If someone wanted to do city walks, would this combo work? Im looking to use the Osmo Pocket 3 with binaural audio, which I was looking at the SonicPresence sp15c in ear microphone to do so. Do I need the Tashcam x6? Looking for the best possible sound. I hope you could answer my question. Thank you for the video!

Hi! Yes this combo would work if you opt in for the XLR version. Do they have a 3.5 plugin power version too?
@TPHxAgeofpage
@TPHxAgeofpage 4 ай бұрын
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks for the response! They actually have a USB-C version, so I guess I don’t need the Tascam potentially. With your sound experience, would you recommend that I go with the USB-C version and just plug straight into the Osmo? Or get the XLR version and get the Tascam? Im looking to get the best possible audio, and as a novice Im not sure if the sound would be better by using the Tascam or using the USB-C. What do you think?
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 4 ай бұрын
@@TPHxAgeofpage Oh that's right they have that. You should look if the USB-C port has enough plugin power for these microphones. Remember they need power in order to work. With the XLR connecter they have phantom power. But if you can plug it into the OSMO right away, it will save you editing time. However, when working with separated sound files, recorded in a higher format, you have more possibilities in post but you could also sell these sounds if you want.
