Despite being thrown into the public eye for most of her marriage to a country music star, Johnny Cash's first wife was all but forgotten by Hollywood. But in a new documentary available for a limited time on Amazon, her daughters set the record straight. "My Darling Vivian" filmmakers Matt Riddlehoover and Dustin Tittle (the grandson of Johnny Cash) tell CBSN's Reena Ninan the untold story of Vivian Liberto.

I watched the documentary. My heart broke when at Johnny Cash's tribute, nothing was mentioned about Vivian. She sat in the audience listening to people share their fond memories of Johnny and his devotion to June. At that moment, Vivian was a mere audience member. How does one get erased from history? This is how.

Vivian Liberto Cash Distin Was one of the most amazing examples of matriarchal America. There was a whole era of women that raised families and we’re homemakers and active in their churches who were so powerful and it’s just an iconography that no longer exists. Especially Sicilian Italian matriarchs it’s a very unique part of 20th century history you don’t hear much about. She’s the personification of a Sicilian American. Just amazing

I never saw Vivian as an awful person in “Walk the Line.” It was evident what was happening to her within the marriage was not on her, but the tornado of John’s rising popularity, drug addiction and growing affection for June. Especially when one listens to the director’s cut version of “Walk the Line,” they understand that both John and June know they are in the wrong when they begin the affair. The director also talks about John’s love for Vivian and highlights the Elvis performance of the song John wrote for Vivian. He emphasizes John’s selfishness and callousness to Vivian by treating her as though she was nothing at the awards show - pursuing June and displaying public jealousy over her recent marriage to that one race car driver dude

Loosing a husband is already hard and its embarrassing to deal with that under the spotlight for everyone to see. Vivian suffered a lot but overcame it. Whether or not Walk the Line was accurate, Ginnifer did a profound job of playing the wife who was doing her best to hold her family together, and had every right to hold her husband accountable for his (at best) detached behaviour.

I doubt Ginnifer went into the film with a preconceived idea of how Vivian really was as a person. Her job was to interpret the script given to her and follow the directions set forth by the production team. She was getting paid to be an ACTRESS, not a historian. 90% of what you see on film is determined by the director because he's the one who calls "CUT!", not the actors. Put your blame somewhere other than Ginnifer and don't make her your personal scapegoat.

I am always appreciative when corrections are made to a false historical narrative. I enjoy the work of all the actors who played in this movie but it is disappointing that they either didn't take the time to get it right or they purposely made a production based on lies for the sake of drama. Feminism doesn't mean tearing one woman down to build another one up. Glad Vivian's story is being told by people who loved her and knew her well.

I just finished watching this doc and it was truly sad! I'm very disappointed that Johnny left his family the way he did and had an affair! I wish he never was discovered by Hollywood. I bet if he never moved to Cali - the entire family would've been fine! Just shows that choices DO have consequences! Truly Vivian loved this man so deeply. I'm so grateful that their daughters came forward! Lastly, the Nashville ceremony was garbage! How dare they EXCLUDE HER!!!!!! UGH!!!! anyways! Viviane you made it! So, after watching this documentary my heart is extremely broken for Vivian. She suffered a heart break that lasted the duration of her life. She didn't deserve the treatment she got. The never ending heartbreak she endured caused her to make a decision that inflicted that same heartbreak on another innocent woman. It seems she lived in a constant state of despair but tried to push it deep, deep down. It just goes to show how destructive a selfish mentality is. I can't say this enough but men need to be held accountable for these types of actions. There is no way that his "love" with June should have been celebrated the way that it was. What a strong woman Vivian truly was. I take great pleasure in knowing she's earned her place in heaven now. Edit: All love stories are not created equally. To celebrate the "love story" of a married man and his MISTRESS is morally repulsive! And the way EVERYONE tried to write Vivian out was absolutely insane. Imagine giving your everything to a man, having his babies, sticking with him through the tough times, trusting him with everything and then one day he stops loving you and starts chasing someone else?? He was so wrapped up in his own happiness that he basically had no part in raising his 4 children that were at home! June taunted Vivian all because she wanted Jhonny to herself. A man SHE KNEW BEFOREHAND WAS MARRIED! Any woman or man defending that type of behavior must have been a mistress themselves and gets zero respect from me. So please, keep those growing apart comments to yourself. When you grow apart and decide not to work on the relationship: GET A DIVORCE!! PREFERABLY before you get involved with someone else. #selfishandselfcentered

Why shouldn't his love for June Carter have been celebrated? They went about it wrong with cheating, but Johnny Cash loved June Carter. Johnny and Vivian's marriage was doomed. He grew apart from her and did not love her anymore. It happens all of the time. She may have loved him until the day she died, but it was not the same for him. He loved June like that. I don't think it had anything to do with her being black or mixed or whatever. He had eyes. Her being dark did not seem to bother him. He still was a young boy who fell in love with her. What happened to them happens to many young couples.

I’ll say what I do about all infidelity: when a spouse cheats, that’s who deserves the primary blame and the emotions that go along with it. Does the other man or woman share some blame? Certainly. But for me, I wasn’t married to the woman who chose to sleep with my husband. Yes it was wrong that she knew he was married and had children at home. But I didn’t have a relationship with her so she didn’t betray me. My husband did. He shattered our family and abandoned our 4 children in the process. And in my case he did so the same week I learned I had stage 3 ovarian cancer. The fact she knew I had cancer reflected poorly on her character, but again, she was not my concern. I leave her to karma. That there was another, random woman involved was of little concern to me because she could’ve been anyone. And would have been someone else most likely. The old adage is true - if they’ll cheat with you, they’ll cheat on you.

I remember that country song, I want a love like Johnny and June. Back then, I really liked it because i didn't know the real story behind it and growing up my mon would talk about watching Johnny Cash making appearances on TV with June and their son Johnny Jr. And how the audience loved seeing little Johnny. But a few years back I saw Vivian's book at Walmart and bought it and read It and I was really surprised how different her story was compared to the ones I heard most my life. Now as an adult, watching I walk the Line makes me realize how messed up and toxic Johnny and June's relationship was. So for someone to sing, I want a love like Johnny and June. Is basically encouraging people that it's ok to stay in toxic relationships and Ok to cheat and condone abusive behavior.

Hey, I’m Italian. I was born in America. I had my DNA done. I have Greek, Turkish, other Middle Eastern and North African DNA. You couldn’t marry your sister or cousin so men traveled (fishermen for example), and while working looked for wives. On the other side of the mediterranean from the bottom of Italy, and in this woman’s case Sicily, is north Africa! Therefore you can see how you could have a grandmother of African descent. It’s not that big a deal. Unfortunately this woman was so exotic looking that Southerners started rumors and really drove her into the ground. That is a whole other, horrible, subject. She was mostly Sicilian! Love to all!

Having a bout of insomnia tonight and going down a KZfaq rabbit hole starting with a Roseanne Cash video from the 1980's. It seems that all of Jonny Cash's progeny are intelligent, caring, and articulate people. That's a legacy he left behind that's just as important as his music and lyrics.
