Considdering that Mr. Gordon basicly helped me finish my montlong tials at the end of my apprenticship out of pure spite and raw powerfull anger and that Doom 1 helped me cool down afterwards, I will say that both are nice.

The original's soundtrack took a lot of inspiration from Metallica so I wouldn't exactly call it "unique". Still great, of course.

The originals are Metal through and through, but while I don't think the term's been adopted by people at large, I'd refer to the new Doom soundtracks as "Metalstep," which makes the most sense to me. Name any other genre that can get away with using a *_chainsaw_* as the lead instrument and you win an Internet.

It's just 'cause the old music is limited by the sound capabilities of the time. It's an unfair comparison, really. More fair would be pitting the new music against some modern metal covers of the old soundtrack. (Though, most covers slow it way down for some God-forsaken reason.)

Playing the old DooM nowadays it is also a more chill game. You dont jump around erraticly, switching through 4 weapons in 2 seconds, glory kill to refill your health and ammo. It is a nice sunday afternoon game, there are tons of WADs to play through, so many that you cant play all of them in your whole life.

doom 3's main menu theme is great but then in the gameplay it's just omnious sounds. i wouldn't even call it a real soundtrack. same goes for doom 64.

Doom 3 was like a really long tech demo, still fun but definitely didn't feel finished. That's just a byproduct of the time it came out though, ID software wasn't doing so good.

It‘s definitely one of the few franchises that fit that criteria, but definitely not the only one. One of the most obvious choices just have to be Resident Evil, which has changed way more often and far more drastically and every entry, except that railshooter and Umbrella Corps is great.

They've gotta get inventive to make something great with something so limited in it's capabilities. Basically the NieR games are the orchestral and sad music equivalent of dooms metal music. You get free games with both. Dooms a masterpiece of gameplay loop and combat, NieR games are masterpieces of emotional storytelling and characters.

@noc omment yeah its a beautiful ending but a depressing game. Even more depressing if you read the side materials. And overall, it's actually not that happy of an ending when compared to actual happy endings. They get to stay alive, in an already shitty world full of pain death and suffering. What a happy ending that is. The happiest part about it is that it's less sad and depressing than the previous endings which either end with 1 or all people dying. It's bittersweet at best, and the meaning behind it is hopeful, but the overall game won't provide someone with that same feeling. It's a depression roller coaster with a glimpse of hope at the end.

@noc omment and whether it's even bittersweet or not is still up to the player since there are 2 possible endings to ending E thanks to a script reading taro made after the game released. Either 1 of them wakes up but the other never does, the other waits over their corpse until the end of their days. The other ending is happier because they both wake up. But both could be considered Canon since there's no sequel that's confirmed what exactly happened. Similar to how the infamous games have good karma and bad karma endings, but both could be Canon until a sequel confirms which ending we actually got.
