New Driftwood often gets a growth of white fungus on it if it's from the store, but will break out with algae if collected from a stream or river.

The instructions on my spider wood said this would happen. I got 3 shrimps to help eat the bloom. My betta doesn’t seem to mind it, although it’s spreading to her plants. Week 1 down. Maybe 2 or 3 to go before it should improve.

@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly the interesting thing was, I had an established tank with a piece of cholla wood. I made a new tank and idk if it's because it's still cycling, but the "cotton candy" appeared almost overnight! I was shocked. But glad to hear it's not a problem. Lol I went ahead and brushed it off with a toothbrush for the most part anyway 😉😊

My new piece of spider wood was soaked for a week and went into my tank two days ago. That thing is producing biofilm like that's its job. I know it's harmless and even useful, though, I'm just going to wait it out.

My white film didn’t go away and just turned into black fluffy algae that would break apart. I only had an axolotl in that tank so maybe that was that.

That white fuzzy slimy stuff grew on my mopani wood, and it got too much for me so I pulled it out and it stunk to high heaven. So gross I almost got sick. I tried treating it with peroxide, that didn't help, so I removed it from the tank again, and put it in a bucket of General Cure and then added Flourish Excel by Seachem. It is now back in the tank, and by the AM I will know if that treatment worked. If it didn't work I will resort to a Fungal medication and see if that will work. If it wasn't that it makes the tank stinky I would just leave it, but the smell is gross if you leave it in with that stuff on it. Any other suggestions?

Shrimos are good at removing and eating white fungus on driftwood. Not all of it is fungus thught but micro crustaceans, biofilm, auf wuchs, and infusoria.

What type of flood lights do you use. I'm setting up a 20 long, and just curious of type and wattage. Thanks.
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly 4 жыл бұрын
Those are CREE flood lights from Home Depot. I think they're 15 watts or thereabouts. Look for the ones that say CRI 90+. They have a full spectrum light that's beautiful. These are 5000K color temp. I think they call it "daylight". They also have 3000K (maybe 2700) so look at the box carefully.
