It always fascinates me that whole cities can disappear and be forgotten. For a thousand years people lived in Vlochos and everyone around knew the city. And then it died out, got robbed to its foundations, became ruins, storytelling by one's grandfather, and then just some rubble along the mountainside. And it can happen with our cities as well, no matter how hard it is to imagine.

That happened to Viroconium (The Town of the Werewolf), a major city of Roman Britain which was abandoned and never resettled by the Angles or Saxons. Some of its stones were used to build the parish church of the village of Wroxeter. We don't even know what the story of the werewolf (wolfman?) was.

Great to see Derek and Lawrence in the spotlight! They're the best thing during the daily dig watches but don't seem to get much coverage in the final shows. I knew of Derek's Greek connection from their podcast, but it's great to see archeology in such an usual landscape. And I REALLY like the reworked theme music- is it using Greek instruments? It adds a counter-melody which makes the usual theme even better.

Excellent! You have preserved the original ethos and style of this great programme well! I wonder how often snow thaw is used to indicate the presence of archaeological finds? It must be such a thrill to be flying over an area and spot the outline of some ancient building.. Nice one team! 🌟👍

Now that almost anyone can afford a drone, it should be a lot easier to record transient effects like how the snow thaws over a field. Along with how grass and cereal crops grow, that's a whole new kind of topographic surveying that's even less invasive or hands-on than the various kinds of geophysics. You don't even need permission from the land owner or public authorities!

It's been so interesting to see Near Eastern archaeologists move off of the mounds and down into the "lower cities", away from the elites of society. The most famous of these being the lower city of Troy, which has changed our perspective on how the city fits into the descriptions of it we find in the Iliad. And just recently we had the discovery of a "pub" in Lagash, one of the earliest cities in history.

Really looking forward to followup episode/s! Super-grateful for the accurate captioning also (albeit slightly mis-cued) as I found the audio pretty challenging to follow on this one, I'm sorry...? (Sounded almost like outside conversations had been picked up via boom mike rather than individual lav mikes, leading to very patchy pickup depending on which way speakers faced, although that seems unlikely for a pro production? Even some of of the voiceover sounded really 'fuzzy' to me.)
