If NRS used MKX as a canvas and took the 2 best variations of each character and combined them for example Scorpion Hellfire + Ninjistu and add a special move from Inferno (demon summons) Kung Lao Tempest + Buzzsaw and a special from hat trick (Hatrap) And what's even more insane is that NRS could keep the characters strings the same since they were universal in each variation they can also add those unique ones like scorpions ninjustu strings to the list above. Imagine the Characters in this example right now compared to what we got in MK1. THIS I what i expected from MK11 and more so MK1... This is what Mortal Kombat's trajectory should've been. When you find success you don't deviate from it you build upon it. This is called Legacy. Capcom and Namco know this and thats why they're at the top.

What no one is saying is that MKX started the conservatism regarding character movesets. MKX introduced the variation system. Everyone seems to praise MKX but I only used 1 version of each character I used on that game. The best part about MKX was the fact I could use more characters than I’ve ever used in any fighting game.

Something happened to where for some reason we have seen regression from NRS. MK9 to injustice, MKX is where NRS were at the peak of their powers It all came to a head with injustice 2, quite possibly the last great game from NRS despite it's reputation and its not even close when compared to mk11 and MK1 We need to ask the question why NRS took 20 steps back after having the success formula with their 1st 3 games?

Start streaming weekly MKX! This might help MK way more that anything else. Max loves Marvel as much as you love MK. But instead of crying, he keeps the games he loves alive more or less. I'm sure this influenced Capcom in a positive way.

If NRS shocks the world and actually improves the game, I can imagine it being in the form of Ultimate MK1 where everything is given a shot of steroids, the characters, the kameos, etc. The only thing is that they will probably make it a separate game meaning you’d have to pay full price to get it unless for people who already own MK1 it’ll be an update that may or may not be free of charge.

Yea all the MKs after X are watered down. Fatalitys, X rays, the appearance of the characters and gameplay is mid. The balance patch decisions from Nrs also are what turned me off from MK1.

Great podcast! I don't know why there's so many nerfs for MK1 . They reduced all playable characters' kombo potential with the exception of 2 characters. And with the kameo gymmicks, they are constantly nerfing them in every patch. What's the point of creating a kameo system if the Kameos are going to slow the game down instead of complimenting the characters. 😢

As broken as 3s is, player expression is amazing. You can literally tell from ANY top 8 who's playing the chun. yun, urien or ken etc without reading the player names. Games struggle with that nowadays I feel, they pigeon hole you into playing a certain way.

Glad I’m not the only one who noticed how NRS shifted their music composition from unique grungey high paced BGMs that fit the stages into a more generic super hero/ action movie style soundtrack since MKX. It’s jarring as hell.

Movement being useless seems to be one of the biggest problems with modern mk. Mk has the combos but you can't even space or whiff counter. Movement needs to be rewarding for a competitive fighting game in my opinion. Mk9 had movement that everyone loved

A bit late on watching this but so much in this video I agree with, I pretty much share most of the opinions my brother has. I miss the days of higher power levels and find the older NRS games to be more fun

Hi guys I can’t agree more with all being said and laid to bear with this review. Fact I also hated MK 11 then when they put out this waste of money of a game I realized the same thing you guys have immediately made clear MK1 is boring! I hate the cameo system it didn’t add to the game it finished killing it. They made a roaster of incomplete characters simply because Johnny doesn’t have projectiles. Really? There main most fun to play characters have been so castrated they aren’t even viable anymore. I haven’t played the game again.

MK1 was simply a downgrade to mkX and MK11, they put that half assed kameo system, terrible grind, NRS has no ideas how to balance this roster. Every patch something is either broken, one or two characters are so op, not to mention the fatigue of playing the same character and Kameos.

The context of Tracking throws in T8 was something added in Tekken 8 and people felt it made the game less interesting as it removed one of the defensive options in the strike throw mix-up game and was largely disliked at a high level not just a low level.

NRS needs to take notes from DBFZ patches. Those patches always gave almost every character new power besides the top offenders. Some changes were* questionable and had* to be tuned back but it makes for a happy community where everyone can hop on for the patch and learn somthing new.

Yh the problem is mks system mechanics have always been lacking When u take away the characters and evaluate the system mechanics what do you have? Breaker Fatal blow Up block Wake up armor That's About it.. And mind you this is a tag game.. There's nothing wrong with power as long as the game can compensate for it.. A character is only broken when they excede the games system mechanics. ( which is funny considering peace maker being broken is hilarious it shows how shallow the game is) So there needs be an answer for everything that's the only way to balance something. A nerf should only be warranted when there is no counter play.

People like Dave complained about 50-50, MK one has long combos, it has plus frames, what it's missing is high low mixups, the thing that dudes like Dave whined about, got what you asked for

SF6 and T8 just outshine MK1 from the online quality to the different modes and even the menus, MK1 for whatever reason seemed like rushed out cash grab the visuals are nice but no actual substance to be found, hopefully NRS actually takes time to put quality in the game.

Buff the characters not kameos. Ambush abilities should just be given to specific characters not the kameos, because ambush on kameos r controlling the meta of the entire game in a very yolo n repetitive way. Don't think kameos should be given the same attention as characters, because the characters should outshine their kameos not the other around. The current level of kameos outshine characters so much it feels like ur playing against the kameos more than the characters.

Actually, Tom, I found MKX a bit dull when Mileena and Alien were dominating for a while but the game got a late balance patch that helped. It might have been my fave’ MK game cos it was fun and seemed the most balanced of all. MK11 was fun for me cos Fujin is my fave’ MK character and was my main, but even HE got boring to watch in tournies eventually. I used to LOVE SF: 3S for years but the game was dominated by 2 characters and had fewer than 20 characters. It was mostly fun cos I had a lot of local comp against good players and friends and they mostly used a variety of decent characters so it didn’t get as frustrating and boring as it otherwise could have been 😂 I didn’t play competitively so that helped. For MK1, Johnny and PM were BORING characters to me, and I have had a character crisis. Takeda might become my main alongside Li Mei. I’m praying that more buffs will come and that the expansion and newer DLCs will help but I’m not getting my hopes too high. The meta seems different now, at least.

To be fair guilty gear also watered down there game by a lot but the kept it fresh and Mk just feels like they got lazy and money hungry idk how to explain the difference between the to but Mk11 and mk1 are boring and suck aside from graphics

the brutalities in mk1 suck ass. most of them are for grab and 90% of them don't even work unless the opponent is grounded so most characters only have 1-2 brutality kombos. lame

From a purely watcher's perspective: + boring to watch because always same characters with the same attacks + personally I don't like the aesthetics & animations (except for Mei Ling almost nobody does real logical martial arts movements). no impact on strikes. characters are too small on the screen, too much focus on backgrounds + cameos just suck in every aspect + attitude/atmosphere/story: firstly in Liu Kang's world 'nobody has ever died or even been injured during MK. What??!?'. Then those over the top fighters need help from a cameo-buddy and can't handle stuff on their own? and too much weapon usage in normal moves + they are almost all the same body type and almost all have this strange mouth where the upper lip is too wide/broad and makes these little 'wings' on the side when the teeth are shown + story is weak, but that is of course also subjective. but Liu Kang's tourney is the worst: he gives Raiden special powers and prepares him specifically for the Outworlders.. also just one fighter from Earthrealm. No Fatalities :D
