Hello everyone. It has been a while since we highlighted the old Schuylkill and Susquehanna Railroad. This weekend gave us the opportunity to do so. With my weekend being spent at the Schuylkill County fairgrounds, who's entrance way is built on the railbed, It was a no brainer to look for something cool.
Originally built as the Dauphin and Susquehanna Railroad in 1854, this was built to haul coal from Lebanon County PA to the PRR at Rockville PA. It would be reorganized as the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Railroad in 1859 and would run from the Rockville PA area east to the Philadelphia and Reading at Auburn PA. The Philadelphia and Reading would take over operation of the line in 1872 and it would become the Schuylkill and Susquehanna branch of the Reading. After a bridge fire near Pine Grove PA the road would be abandoned by the Reading. This was in 1939. Let's take a walk and I'll fill in the gaps. Thank you for watching. 7/7/24

I have found that during the late Fall, after a 1.0" or less snowfall is the favored time of year to spot these features w / summer being the worst conditions to ID.

Agreed. A fresh snow highlights the grades perfectly. Lack of foliage is even better. The tradeoffs I find to be 70/30 in favor of fall and winter. What I like most about the summer exploring is the ability to get into the water ways. Sometimes it's the only way to circumvent private property. I'm actually planning my first kayak trip down the Schuylkill river. There will be some incredible things to see!

@@kevinsalsbury2118 Morning Kevin. I live in the Hudson Valley just north of New York City. My RR I follow is the New York Ontario & Western, New York Central, the Ulster & Delaware and some of the semi extinct short lines in the hood. There is a considerable network of rail trails in the area and my wife and I enjoy biking these pathways.

Wonderful area you live in. I follow the lost railbeds channel. Russ is really good at documenting the area up there. Would love to visit up there one day. Tons down here to keep me busy for a while though. Have a wonderful day.

There is a nice old rail bed on the ridge behind the Shenandoah no 5 water dam. Don't know much about it.

I have a bad habit of spotting old RR beds and their vegetated infested ROW and bridge abutments. The vestiges of 19th century equivalent of the interstate. The US version of the Apian Way and the Silk Road.

You and I share the same quality. I'm constantly looking for grades everywhere I drive. Even on roads I've traveled hundreds of times. Always looking for that one thing I missed. I spend a lot of time looking on Google maps, find a grade, then try to match it up maps on Wikipedia. It has been paying off. Problem is that there is so much to see that I never know which direction to go lol.

Tires are recycled now to use in asphalt. I don't know if there are collection places for them. The state DOT should have collection places at the DOT yards. They have one at Exit 44 of 476 and another one just south of Quakertown on 309. There are lots of DOT yards and they could easily have a truck or roll off container for collecting them. I still remember when they started using tires in asphalt in the late 90s. The sound changed on the highways and they were louder and had a deeper bass sound that traveled a lot further than the old concrete or old asphalt. But they say the new asphalt lasts longer and is easier on tires. So, the trade off is worth it.

Good evening Bill. That is great they are recycling tires for asphalt. I had no idea. I could spend the rest of my life collecting discarded tires and still not get them all. And that's just in our area. There are spots along the Lehigh Canal that have so many. It's really a bummer to see.

You have a total disrespect for private property. No Trespassing means No Trespassing. It doesn’t matter if it’s farm land or industrial, stay the hell out.
@kevinsalsbury2118
@kevinsalsbury2118 5 күн бұрын
More a curiosity than disrespect. There is a ton that I will never get to see because I respect the property. I weigh my options and then move forward. Don't spray paint or steal, just like history. If that means trespassing on some abandoned quarry property then so be it. By the way do you own this land?
