It is cheaper to put every function behind a screen than physical buttons. Imagine having buttons for every app on your smartphone. You should have 100s of buttons. But software functionality is cheaper since it requires only one component- the screen. Software is light work

Was really excited about this right up until you showed the centre console. I will never understand how companies can think it's safe to replace physical buttons with a touchscreen - it's so dangerous, especially when, like on this car, it forces you to look all the way down to see what's happening!

Car designers seem to be in their own bubble, and don't care what customers actually want. We're seeing it across industries, so this is hardly an automotive problem. Square Enix and their NFT games, or Meta and their dumbass Metaverse decisions. We can just add Ford to that list now too.

The problem with the screen is even in the upper position the screen is still too low as it causes your eyes to look down. It should have a twist feature to put the screen in landscape position and the top of the screen should be right at the bottom of the dash so you would only have to slightly look down away from the road to use the screen

It's ironic that these companies gather together to make a single platform that'll make cars cheaper. Then they seemingly share different knobs and buttons in the car. All for the sake of saving money. So now I'm thinking, _"If these companies are saving all this money by joining forces and generally speaking EV motors are cheaper to build than "engines" and that all these electronics are cheaper to make that the old style push buttons and pull knobs... How come EV's are do damn well more expensive when compared to "engine" powered vehicles?"_ 8-\\...

I much prefer it over an ID3 or 4 but it's really frustrating they haven't put some physical HVAC controls in, which they could have still done on the sliding screen thingy, and also kept the maddening sign of cost cutting which is 3 window switches for 4 windows. But overall looks like it could be good if the range and pricing are competitive.

@TejaPeela

If you're going to have a screen regardless, 100% aligned with you it's a cost savings from a materials perspective. If you are just implementing a screen for the first time though, you are going to get killed developing the software and make everything work through the screen.

Interesting looking SUV, well styled. Some minor criticisms and comments: I like the adjustable sat nav screen, which would be even better if it could also tilt towards the driver. Because of the borrowed VW platform it’s unfortunate that it hasn’t got a front trunk, particularly given the average sized boot. In Tesla this is a genuinely useful innovation. Again, because of the VW platform, it’s also a wide car, which doesn’t help with parking and narrow streets and country lanes. 250 miles actual range is the minimum acceptable in a modern electric family car. I would hope that the bigger battery version can manage 300 miles plus.

From an aesthetic p-o-v, I think it's a winner. Ride comfort, range and price will ultimately determine its success or failure. The starting price of the Mach-E has risen 9k, and its ride is unacceptable. IMO, Ford needs to reign in its prices to appeal to its traditional customer base and demographic. Ford has repeatedly failed to go upmarket by rebranding or purchasing prestige brands. Now it seems it thinks it can take the Ford brand upmarket and have the likes of the Mach-E branded as Mustang. IMO, Ford needs therapy to accept itself for what it is and be happy and proud. And also to accept its traditional customer base and demographic and be happy and proud to serve them. However, it is probably a smart move to collaborate with VW to share some platforms. I hope this starts sub-40k!

VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat are all part of the VW Group. The MEB platform will eventually be replaced by SSP - the scalable system platform. It would be unwise for all these companies to develop seperate platforms when you can focus your ressources on one project, especially when you're playing in the same team anyways. Audi and Porsche for example are developing the PPE platform for their high end premium cars and have already joined efforts to develop the J1 used for the taycan and e-tron gt. Ford's move to help scale VW's technology does come to a surprise, however they will only use the MEB for about two Ford Models until they have their own platform.(edit: spelling)

Having done over 10k km in id3/born, I can confidently tell you that the VW window control panel does not in any way stop you from accidentally opening the rear windows; as the switch between rear and front is capacitive, you hit it accidentally when you're trying to find the rockers, meaning you have to do the same process you do now (return windows up) THEN look down, find the capacitive F/R switch, hit it, then try again. I promise, this is not a solution to anything.

Excellent presentation. For me, the lack of a front trunk isn't a complete dealbreaker, but it's a significant deficiency. I've driven the U.S. spec VW id.4. In my opinion it's a second class EV. Another consideration is the reputation of the local dealer. In our case, the Ford dealer is excellent and the VW dealer is not well established.

Love the interior styling, looks very futuristic and nice. This is the only EV car I've seen that also makes me like the non-grill front end. I am a sucker for the Ford Explorer in general though. Shame they aren't introducing it in the US for now.

So, this is the new "estate," aka "wagon." A car that's taller than need be. I'd say it's stylish and the interior is fine. They didn't overdo the ambient lighting and while it isn't distinctive, it's pleasant.

We used to get the Explorer back in late 90s and early 00s. Chewed Petrol for fun...It was a class above this and was seen as a cheap Range Rover competitor. It was also infamous for the Firestone Tyre debacle. They used to fail the elk rollover test and the tyres where also prone to failing. Firestone blamed the Explorer and Ford blamed Firestone. This was the reason Ford stopped using Firestone as a Tyre supplier..

Hey Rory great video, but sadly as good as this looks it’s more likely to be fighting against the rivals from the likes of Kia and Hyundai with the Niro and Kona as that’s more the size it sounds, if that’s the case with a range of around 250 miles it’s going to hard for people to say that the Ford is where the money should go to, with both the Korean rivals able to to do far more range and the Tesla model Y being even better on range again, I can’t see this selling well if it’s priced near the £30K-£50K especially if they skimp on range and tech in the lower trim variants. It’s a shame as like the EV5 I love the look of the Explorer but, there are better sounding EVs either out there or coming out soon, it will also be competing against the likes of the Fisher Ocean which is due for UK shores in July as the right hand drive models are already in production.

@WEZ4136
@WEZ4136 Жыл бұрын
@@_TrueDesire_ that depends on the user, those that home charge don’t care about ccs charge speed being as most would have a break from driving just as long as it would take to charge at a ccs. The range to battery size is more important to users than how fast the battery can charge if they’re just going to have to stop again because the car doesn’t have the range.
@WEZ4136
@WEZ4136 Жыл бұрын
@@marijnmolenaar2848 yeah at least the Fiesta had a specific sector and fans that would choose it over the next new hatchback trying to take its place. I just don’t get the point of making the Mach-e and the F150 lightening in house and being successful to then basically rebadge an id4 that shows nothing under the skin that makes the other Ford EVs as good as they are, the impressive frunk and range of the F150 and the dynamic driving feel of the Mach-e, for me the Explorer is a good looking failure that should have been the fiesta EV

@@WEZ4136 VAG offers almost 2X the speed and Kia/Hyundai's flagships offer 800V charging. If the cars would cost €35-40K sure but when they are close to 55-60K it's a big no no. Everyone I know demands minimum 100kW, preferably faster. Even if you had ~500kW charging capability doesn't mean YOU need to pick the fastest charger available. I'm one of those that can't charge at home so I want minimum 300 kW and 80-100 kWh before even thinking about buying one, and solid state tech.
