This video - an exploration of the site that was RAF Calshot - is the second part of a series of short videos where I visit the site of former RAF Airfields that were in existence during World War Two.
Having visited three former WW2 RAF Airfields - at RAF Beaulieu, RAF Holmsley South & RAF Ibsley - during my series on "New Forest Walk" videos, I was keen to visit the sites of the other nine RAF airfields that were also in operation during World War Two.
My objective was to visit each site & see what evidence was still there (if any) of it's former existence and to find out a little bit of the history behind the airfield.
Rather than just stand by the side of a busy road & point the camera at an empty field (or industrial estate) and give a bland narration, I decided to produce the clips (between 2 to 5 minutes on each site) with a mixture of video footage interspersed with text, photos & background music.
I must stress that I am not an expert or historian and so I apologise if I have made any mistakes with the facts (please do correct any incorrect information by adding a comment). Indeed if you have any other information regarding the sites that you feel may be of interest to other viewers, then please feel free to comment.
I really wanted to see what was still there at each site, after 75+ years, and to record it for the future. Please do check out all of the videos in the series.

Thank you Dave, very fitting as we have just passed ‘Rememberence Day’. I have a keen interest in ,Lawrence of Arabia. He were heavily involved in the ‘Schneider Trophy ‘races’, preparing , repairing aircraft on race ocassions & trials, helping the UK to retain this trophy. if my memory serves there is a trophy or a replica on the bookcase in Lawrence’s cottage at Cloud’s Hill? Lawrence were also responsible for the design/ construction of the Air/ Sea Rescue RAF Motor Launches at Calshot, in his last 4 years of his Service.

Re the view of the former guard hut and searchlight base, my parents owned the chalet with the skylights you can to the left of the hut from 1958. At that time it was a café and the guard hut to the eastern RAF base bas was around 400 yards further down the road towards the base. I have memories of the airman swimming from the beach, there was a raft moored in the sea, from which we all swam. My sister married one of the airman.

My mum was stationed there for a while towards the end of the war. She was a flight mechanic.

@@DaveFord yes I did watch it. I have a small framed picture that my mum "liberated" from Calshot at the end of the war. She was a waaf trained flight mechanic but always said that she was "misemployed" at Calshot as a marine mechanic involved in sea rescue.

Great job Dave but where’s Logan? 😀

Thank you. These "mini" videos were not really walks as such (mainly me pointing the camera at a field or building, often by a road) and I don't think Logan will have been too impressed with all the "standing about" … so he stayed at home! He continues to join me, of course, in the "New Forest Walk" series!
