This video - an exploration of the site that was RAF NEEDS OAR POINT - is the third part of a series of short videos where I visit the site of former RAF Airfields that were in existence during World War Two.
Having visited three former WW2 RAF Airfields - at RAF Beaulieu, RAF Holmsley South & RAF Ibsley - during my series on "New Forest Walk" videos, I was keen to visit the sites of the other nine RAF airfields that were also in operation during World War Two.
My objective was to visit each site & see what evidence was still there (if any) of it's former existence and to find out a little bit of the history behind the airfield.
Rather than just stand by the side of a busy road & point the camera at an empty field (or industrial estate) and give a bland narration, I decided to produce the clips (between 2 to 5 minutes on each site) with a mixture of video footage interspersed with text, photos & background music.
I must stress that I am not an expert or historian and so I apologise if I have made any mistakes with the facts (please do correct any incorrect information by adding a comment). Indeed if you have any other information regarding the sites that you feel may be of interest to other viewers, then please feel free to comment.
I really wanted to see what was still there at each site, after 75+ years, and to record it for the future. Please do check out all of the videos in the series.

Lovely video. A lot of hard work went into building the airfield for it only to be used for a short time.

Thanks Ann. You would never give those fields a second look just driving by and yet they have their own story to tell!

Hi Dave, Awesome videos! I saw you on the Bald Explorers videos about the Ashley walk bombing range. A real font of knowledge I find it/you very interesting. Im a local lad, used to live in ferndown now im in southampton. I was wondering if you ever take people with you on your walks? Id love to come and hear some of this local history first hand.

Thanks for your kind comments. All my walks are just me & Logan (my dog). Hopefully folk will be able to follow the directions of my walks (I always try and put up a Google Map that can be cross referenced with an OS map) and be able to look out for some of the aspects that I point out in the videos. You might be interested in the Friends Of New Forest Airfields (they have a website) as they sometimes put on talks / walks etc. The book "Ashley Walk - Its bombing range, landscape & history" by A Pasmore & N Parker is certainly well worth getting & reading - you will find it very interesting. Cheers. Dave.
