This video - an exploration of the two sites that were RAF LYMINGTON and RAF HURN- is the fourth part of a series of short videos where I visit the sites of former RAF Airfields that were in existence during World War Two.
Having visited three former WW2 RAF Airfields - at RAF Beaulieu, RAF Holmsley South & RAF Ibsley - during my series on "New Forest Walk" videos, I was keen to visit the sites of the other nine RAF airfields that were also in operation during World War Two.
My objective was to visit each site & see what evidence was still there (if any) of it's former existence and to find out a little bit of the history behind the airfield.
Rather than just stand by the side of a busy road & point the camera at an empty field (or industrial estate) and give a bland narration, I decided to produce the clips (between 2 to 5 minutes on each site) with a mixture of video footage interspersed with text, photos & background music.
The site at RAF HURN is now Bournemouth International Airport and so I was restricted as to what I could actually see - hence the reason why all I am doing is just standing on the outside perimeter fence and filming ! However I didn't want to leave the site out of the series!
I must stress that I am not an expert or historian and so I apologise if I have made any mistakes with the facts (please do correct any incorrect information by adding a comment). Indeed if you have any other information regarding the sites that you feel may be of interest to other viewers, then please feel free to comment.
I really wanted to see what was still there at each site, after 75+ years, and to record it for the future. Please do check out all of the videos in the series.

Interesting video as always and a little bit of history as well. Hurn as you may well know became a aircraft manufacturing site post war when Vickers Armstrong became involved manufacturing Varsities for the RAF and Viscounts for commercial use especially by what was then British European Airways BEA. Later, as our aero industries consolidated and the British Aircraft Corp was formed, they manufactured the only other (the Comet being the first) true commercial British passenger jet, the BAC 111of which over 200 were built.

Thanks Dave - really interesting. I used to travel through the New Forest regularly, and have spent some time looking for the old airfields. There is very little left of most of them.

Yes indeed. Sad that in some cases, so little remains of them....yet for a short while they played such an important part in the defence of our country

Interesting - but I had to mute the video. If you go onto the industial areas either side of Hurn Airport, you can still find buildings which date back to the 1940s.

Thank you. It was one of my "earlier" videos & not being a "countryside walk" as such, I was struggling with the editing somewhat! As you correctly mention, there are still a few old buildings at Hurn - some on private land - it would be great to go back and film there some time, with permission.
