This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the Pylewell Park Estate (2 miles East of Lymington) and explore the surrounding area.
I park my car in Tanners Lane (just of Sowley Lane) and start my walk on the shore with super views over the Solent to the Isle of Wight. I head West following a permissive footpath with the Pylewell Park Estate on my right and the Boldre Foreshore Nature Reserve on my left. I cross a bridge over Plummers Water and head slightly inland along a path that takes me through woods then over meadows as far as Shotts Lane at which point I head North.
I get the chance to check out the location of RAF Lymington an Advanced Landing Ground (basically a temporary airfield) in WW2. There is an information board and indeed still one of the original hangars on the site.
I follow the Solent Way (Long Distance Path) Eastwards through the estate with sightings of Pylewell House itself and past a pretty cricket ground & edge of a lake towards Sowley Road before heading back to my car in Tanners Lane.
The video includes a clip of a quick look at St Marys Church at South Baddesley (just North of the estate) with it's distinct slender West Tower.
I should point out that there is a muddy section (even in the Summer months) on the path that goes through the woods from the shore to the camping field so good waterproof boots are essential.
Corrections: The Pylewell Cricket pitch is to the North EAST of Pylewell House (and not the North West as indicated in the video). The brick building that I highlight at the end of a field is a fuel pumping station - from WW2 - rather than a fuel store.

HI Dave. Enjoyed that video. I used to work on a plant nursery situated in the old walled garden of Pylewell House. On the map it's an oval shape just to the North East. There were old, overgrown wall-trained fruit trees laden with fruit that fell on the ground and attracted swarms of hornets. They would get drunk on the fermenting plums and drone around at low level, very alarming!

Another cracking video, Dave. Really found the RAF Lymington stuff very interesting. Great to see Logan adding a bit of slapstick to proceedings, too. As always, now looking forward to the next on. Best wishes - Ric

Thanks Ric. Thankfully I was able to give Logan a "clean" in the sea before getting back into the car! Thank you for watching.

Hello Dave. How did Logan get in that state? Running through the mud? Tanners Lane was the only public access to the beach if I recall. Not easy to park the car down there, due to lack of space. I lived at Sowley from 1995 to 1999 and the estate actually had their own private little beach for the farm staff. It was opposite Sowley pond. I’ve visited the grounds of Pyewell house. When I was a member of the camera club , we asked the owners if we could come in and take photographs. That crop with the blue flowers was linseed (flax). There is quite a lot being grown this year. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Lionel. We were going through a shaded wood and Logan managed to find a deep muddy part of the track!

Thank you Dave and Logan, I remember my father talking about the airfield, he was contracted to help clear the tracking from the site. So I found your walk very interesting. Take care.

Nice walk Dave, one of my favourite places along the north Solent shore. The muddy spot is very important, it keeps that area a bit quieter. Good bit of history I must have a look at that memorial gate by the church. Thanks Dave.

Thanks Peter. Although it really wasn't on the walk route itself, I thought that it was worth having a look at as there were a few interesting aspects to it - particularly the gate.
