Join me and my dog, Logan (the Whippet) as we continue our series of walks in the New Forest with a gentle stroll around the area at Beaulieu Road.
NB: For some reason, since this video was uploaded, the music has become slightly "out of sync" in a couple of sections. I hope that it doesn't affect your viewing of the video. It was one of my earlier videos and both the editing, production and indeed presenting was a little "rough around the edges"!
NB: Early on in the video, I meant to say that Commoners have a right to graze their animals (and not their land!) on the Forest.
As well as viewing some stunning heathland & woodland we explore the New Forest Pony Sales Yard, the site of a Charcoal Burner's Pit, the crater caused by a WWII German Parachute Mine and - right at the end - experience the famous New Forest Drift (round - up of ponies) happening right in front of us! I should point out that it is "best advice" from the New Forest Park Authorities not to be in the vicinity whilst a Drift / Pony round up is taking place but in this situation I was "under the supervision" of a couple of helpful stewards and indeed I was filming from what was deemed a "safe area" by them both.
Do check out the other "New Forest Video Walks" that I have produced on my channel at

I film using an AKASO V50Pro with an ISteady Gimball and a Canon SX400 IS.

Hello Dave,an Excellent & very informative film. I like to learn something everyday Dave, and you taught me about the ‘New Forest Drift’. Thank you how interesting, I expect all that sudden noise & frenzy startled poor ‘Logan’ that day…….

Thank you Peter. Luckily Logan is fairly "laid back" & calm with most things and indeed is quite used to seeing ponies "on the move" on his regular walks in the New Forest (albeit they were moving rather fast that day!). Thanks for watching.

Nice to see the pony pens as they were before recent events. That’s the first time I’ve actually seen one of the Drifts in operation. You were almost in the firing line there Dave.

Good morning Mr Ford! Having watched your videos, it's crossed my mind if you ever see any Adders in the New Forest?
@DaveFord
@DaveFord 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. Good question. The New Forest National Park website states that "Adders are common & widespread in open areas of the Forest". I have to say however, from my own experiences (I walk my dogs on the Forest - that includes heathland -every day & early in the morning), I very rarely see them - maybe one every 3 years or so. You are most likely to see them on sunny mornings, early Spring, on open heath when they can still be a bit sleepy & slow to move out of they way but in general they keep themselves to themselves. I have probably seen more Grass Snakes than Adders. I never wear shorts (always long trousers) when out on the Forest - even on very hot days - but that is more as a precaution against Ticks than Adders! Thanks for watching.

Another most enjoyable, (even rather exciting!) video Dave. Thanks! BTW. Could that bomb crater not have been the charcoal burning pit? It looked to be about 20m from the tree/bush you mentioned ...

Thanks Nigel - yes, meeting the Drift certainly got the heart racing! The "guide book" that I was using was certain that the charcoal burning pit was in the area that I was looking - but it was so overgrown it was tricky to actually make out any obvious "earth rim". The mine crater was easy to find as it was directly by the path (!) and I did have the advantage of seeing a picture of it on the internet so I had a rough idea of what to look out for. As the years go by and more of these sites become eroded, I guess they will be harder to find!

Thanks Ann. Logan is three and a half years old. He competes at Obedience Shows which is good training for "hanging around" whilst I stop during the walks to film etc!
