Join me & my dog, Logan, as we continue our series of walks in the New Forest. In this episode we go on a circular route to the North of Beaulieu Road, Hampshire and explore Matley Wood & Matley Ridge. We explore the site of a WW1 Trench Mortar School, a War Dog Training Camp (!) & the impressive Park Pale Embankment. As well as coming across some amazing fungi, I explain about the various types of Deer that can be found on the New Forest.

Thanks Dave, that was delightful and informative as usual. I had no idea about the pollarding ban in the 17thC. Makes perfect sense for ship building.

Interesting to see what the well dressed whippet is wearing this season. Quite an extensive wardrobe Logan has Dave!

Ah yes..... the "lightweight" raincoat - ideal for just keeping the wind chill off!

Thanks Dave this looks like a great walk with beautiful scenery, hope to try it next year when I visit again. Really missing the place, I haven't been in 5 years and couldn't make it again this year due to Covid so thanks for posting these videos; I'm working my way through all of them!

Thanks Joey. Glad that you are enjoying the series. It was a misty day at the start of the "Matley Wood" walk but it lifted towards the end!

Talking about pollarding oak trees. I understand what you say was the reason, but I prefer trees to be left to grow as nature intended. Spiders are such busy creatures. All those webs seem to appear overnight, so they must work furiously to get them finished by morning. I remember a field we were going to sow back in the 60s. It was completely covered with strands of web. There must have been tens of thousands of spiders out there in order to achieve that in one night. Lovely video Dave, if a trifle wet underfoot.

Thank you Dave, that was good to hear about all the different types of deer. Quite a squelchy walk.

Yes I enjoyed that walk. Matley Wood itself is very pretty. The heathland and the Kings Passage area might be a little wet at the moment with all the rain but it makes for a great Summer / Autumn walk.

Hope you don’t mind me asking Dave , But what Gimbal head do you use? It seems to work very well or have you a steady arm?.

Hi Leslie. For that particular video I was using an AKASO V50 action camera with a Hohem IStreadyPro2 Gimbal. The Akaso is a super little camera but I find it's image stabilization is vastly improved with a gimbal. These days I now use a Gopro Hero 7 Black action camera and find that the image stabilization is so good that I rarely need the gimbal. Having said that, I was filming a "virtual forest walk" today (no commentary / music...just forest sounds & pictures) and I did use the gimbal with the Gopro to ensure really steady footage.
