In this episode of my series “Walks in Hampshire”, I take a 5 mile “figure-of-eight” walk from the Farley Mount Monument - which is located 8 miles West of Winchester & 8 miles North of Romsey. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car at the free car park (called Juniper), which is just off a minor road by the Farley Mount Country Park, and made my way to the Farley Mount Monument (only a few yards to the West). Sadly the monument was covered in scaffolding as there were refurbishments taking place.
After enjoying the views from the Mount, I headed West along a section of the Clarendon Way. The path gradually took me downhill, off Beacon Hill, to a country road. At this point, I followed the road (once a Roman Road) Eastwards towards Forest of Bere Farm.
At the farm, I joined a byway that headed North and this took me along the bottom of a small valley. At a junction with a small road, I headed West before picking up a footpath, South, across fields towards the village of Ashley.
After visiting the Church of St Mary at Ashley and looking at the remains of Gains Castle nearby, I followed a footpath East that eventually took me back to the bottom end of the byway near Forest of Bere Farm.
My final leg took me along a country road, uphill, back to my car.

Thank you for taking us on your lovely walk. Ashley looks idyllic and beautiful views of the countryside. My whippet’s not able to walk that far now but he still pricks his ears up when Logan does his zoomies 😃

Thank you Vicky. Logan is keeping up his speed, at the moment, at the age of 8 but I suspect that soon he will be taking things a little slower!

I’ve been in Scotland for so long I have a tendency to forget how interesting and beautiful my native Hampshire is in places. I haven’t been up to Farley Mount in years though. Lovely walk.

Hi Dave. You really have become exceptionally good at what you do. Video and audio quality also make your films even more interesting to watch, and you obviously spend a lot of time preparing your routes and content. Looking forward to the next one….Paul

Thanks for another lovely walk, Dave. Certainly very green after all the earlier rain. I hope you've had that throat problem properly checked out - it seems to have gone on for a long time.

Thanks Jim. Pleased to report that I am fully recovered now. I had the laryngitis for about 3 weeks or so which was a nuisance because it coincided with good weather and a period when I filmed about 5 videos!

Thank you Mike. There wasn't a great deal of it that you could see but the ditch & banks are still easy to make out.

Nice bit of trig bagging there and stunning open countryside with various things of interest along the way. No pubs though - you are slipping - and no treats for poor Logan after all those zoomies!

I'd love to know what goes through Logan's mind when you're putting him up on those trig points! What a lucky boy he is to go on such lovely walks.

He did so many "sit stays" in his competitive obedience career that I think he is just used to sitting still now! I probably won't ask him to do any more now as he is getting a bit older now (8 years old) & so we will have to "bag" them with him just sitting beside them rather than on top of them!

Trust your voice gets better Dave, must be due to the lack of beer and crisps at the end of an enjoyable walk 🍺🍺👍👍

Thanks Barry.Fully recovered now but, just in case, I will try my best to finish each walk with a beer - purely for research AND medicinal purposes!
