We said YES to one foster teen girl for "only" 2 weeks and now 2 months later, we still have her AND now another teen girl too :)
There is definitely a NEED in every state for foster parents. I hope this encourages you to take the first step to get licensed yourself or help a foster parent local to you :)

I LOVE that she can call her parents in the middle of the night. I know you would handle the situation but it's great that she has that close bond with her parents even though she is in care.

I think the nice thing about them being older teens is that if/when they want to visit in the future and you are open to it, they can. It will be up to you and them and not the parents or the system.

Wow Lisa! What a crazy twist God threw at you! I think you are a great foster mom no matter the age you have placed with you. Thank you for having the courage to follow where God leads and providing a safe place for these girls. You are doing an awesome job!😊❤

Give yourself grace. Parenting biological teens is super hard, so I can only imagine how hard it must be for foster teens. I’ve learned that even though teens make you feel like they don’t want your opinion and they think you don’t know anything, they still hear you and some of it may stick with them. You may hear them say something months later that will let you know that they did consider the advice you gave. And that’s heartwarming.🥰

Thank you for taking in teens! Group homes are not a place of love and security. Unfortunately that seems to be where most age out and it's so sad. Glad your area had other school options. I had a CASA once that was placed as a freshman and had not been to school since 2nd grade. We fought and fought for some kind of help for her as she was of course failing every class. Unfortunately she ran and I was removed from her case. Not sure what ever happened to her 😞

Oh wow! Yeah, we can do everything possible, but it’s up to them to have the motivation.

Foster kids always feel in limbo, but 17 is the worst because they are already close to aging out and all the fear that entails.

Graduating high school on time is important for 17 year old foster kids a friend of mine aged out in 11th grade and he was 32 before he finally got his GED

Thanks for sharing. I can relate to grieving the childhood they may not have had or at least certain experiences that we associate with our childhoods.

You are doing a great job. By just being there for them. They just need someone to be there.

Depending on how close they are to 18 it may be better to wait until they turn 18 to just get their license instead of getting their permit and then having to wait a year to get their licenses. In my state once you turn 18 you can go in and get a full license. Might be something to look into. The only thing is the potential issue of practicing driving before they take the drivers test.

In Nebraska, a learner's permit means you are in the car with them. With you being right there you can, in most cases prevent an accident from happening. I can see your apprehension about them driving your car without you there but I wouldn't be too worried about it if you are in the car with them.

Accidents can happen even if I’m in the car with them. By them or even other people. It’s still something I need to figure out as far as insurance.

When accepting new placements, do you consult the kids already in the house or do and Peter just make the decision you think is best and then tell the kids?
@HappyHoppe
@HappyHoppe 9 ай бұрын
That’s what I’ve always wanted to do, but so far that’s not been what’s happened. I said yes to the second 17 year old we already knew without even talking to Peter 😂 There’s not always a lot of time to make a decision and if kids are in school, you’re not with them, etc… decisions have to be made. I’ve always told the current placement before someone else comes and get some “buy in” from them before the next placement comes.

I find the 17 year old thing interesting for coming into care cause in my state you are an adult at 17 u might age out at 18 but I'm pretty sure you would not go into foster care unless you are like special needs at 17. My state is kind of weird the difference because some federal laws override the state laws but you can for instance leave home and your parents can't stop you at 17
