It's not everyday we get new Google Home features and updates, and in the past couple of weeks they've given us 6 new routine features! All of these work with your Google Home app and Google Nest speakers and smart displays. They range from new starters in Google Home routines, to a whole new type of Google Home routine that will give you many ideas.
These are the latest updates for your Google Home system, and I will show you how to setup these Google Home routines for maximum effect in your smart home.
I think the new Daylong Routines for Google Home are very useful, and I'm enjoying setting up and running my day with them. I am even using a few new actions that work with Google Assistant routines, like the new news item feature that sends you up to 5 topics' worth of news.
Google home routines have always needed a wait command, but Google calls this Delays. You'll find delays at the bottom of the new routine page once you're picking an action. I think this works really well with Google Assistant's sunrise and sunset routines because now I can delay for 30 minutes (or more...or less) after Sunset to turn on my lighting. I just find that works out better.
I can also delay a routine as I leave my home now and have my door lock 5 minutes after I've left. All of these are good #GoogleHome tips and tricks now that #routines has been seriously updated!

Think it would be a complete game changer if the routines would integrate with Google Calendar. Not having the typical M-F schedule, it would be amazing to have routines based on calendar events.

I think you may do well with a voice activated routine. So on certain days you say certain things and give you a routine. I’m not Monday to Friday and my days are not always the same as well.

The thing is, routines should be able to refer to the calendar for setting up routine. Having to remember to enable/disable routine is as bad as having to remember to do things in the first place in many cases... Still that's progress, and I salute it.

Great video! Thanks Brian. I see detail actions in the routines, but I didn't see details in the routines about the trigger events. Does Google now support third-party door sensor, motion sensors,.. as trigger events in the routines?

Hi, thanks for the video, the big question is when Google will allow virtual switch to start a routine, for example, virtual switch on Smartthings to start a routine

a very helpful tutorial, I was hoping to find a way to run a routine on a period of every second month, or every 60 days, but the only option appears to be a minimum of once per week.

Hey Brian great video This confirms that Google really is striving to be in the background in terms of a smartphone. And that's something I likeMy family has switched completely over to Google and smartthings and we definitely like it that way A lot of these routines are things that smartthings can do but it's nice that they have them on a more consumer friendly level

Great video Brian! One thing I haven't been able to sort out yet is how to make a routine where lights are set to a certain brightness. It seems as the action only allow "On", "Off", "No change". Am I missing something here? Thanks.

Brian, Great videos... I have a workday routine where I want my PHONE to say certain things to me... such as "time for lunch. Lets go get something healthy." However, I have a message at the bottom of the workday routine that says, "No Device for Audio is Available." I do have have an alexa or a google home speaker. It's just my android pixel 4 xl phone and a few chromecast 2 Audios with speakers around my house. I'm I out of luck? Can I change a setting to force my phone to run my workday routine on my phone and speak through my phone... or even better... through my chromcast audios ?

Sadly, your phone can't speak things like this...so you'd need to go about things a bit differently here. You could set a reminder. Chromecasts don't do it either. It's just the speakers that can say things to us for now.

I think you just need to run it twice :) So make a duplicate and maybe offset it by a minute to get higher reliability?

Nice to see Google finally added usefully options BUT still cannot even do the basics like, running a routine from another routine & on radio & alarms incremental volume increases to a set level like the Google clock had been able to do for well over 4 years.

Hey, great vídeos. Can you show us how to make a action (turn light on) in a period of time (between 7pm to 6am ? How do you do periods of time? Also how to just turn one light off IF plug is activated or turns on!

I remember months ago you could start a routine from a google home app and chose in which device run. I used to trigger some routines from my phone but now I can't find a way to do it. Basically I want to be able to initialize a routine from my phone and run in a specific device. Any ideas? If I said "run name_routine on name_device" the routine run on my phone 😔

You can pick the device it runs on when creating the routine, so your best option may be to create 3-4 versions of the same routine with that kind of a name on it. This is likely being lost due to the Sonos vs Google stuff going on, which you can see on our channel.

Hi Brian - Happy New Year, and thanks for your videos. As a beginner within Google Home, I have tried Alarms, Reminders, but it will not work as I whish it did. I need to take some medicin at 8am; sometimes I'm in the bedroom (with a Nest hub 2), but sometimes I'm in the kitchen, the living room or the home office (all rooms with Nest Audio). What can I do, to get an audio alarm on my Home devices, that I can deactive using my voice, when the alarm goes off, no matter where I am in the house?

I would suggest that you enable Google Assistant notifications on your phone and get it there. Or you could set a routine that just plays a certain song on your whole group of speakers.

I feel like with all these features coming to routines family bell is becoming less useful if they could add play pre made sound effect to routines it then could be removed?

I agree...and that break apart of these new alarm dismissal and the Good morning routines really messes with things in a few ways. By the way, there is an action for sound effects. :) Check it out.

I like your video but here is some stuff I like to see and it’s on topic here. What I like to see is why can’t they use the google calendar for creating these routines, my wife works in public school system and when the kids are of school for teacher conferences, teacher meetings, spring break….. I want to create routines for those that would override my scheduler on the thermostat. How can some of that be done?

Sadly, it can't at the moment. There's a way through what's called Home Assistant, but not with Google Home.

There is a base Good Morning Routine available usually in the app. You just add those in if they're not already there Andre. Add Actions to that routine.

Can I set a "Routine" that turns off our Nest Thermostat every day at 3:55-pm? We have electric time of use requirements in our area, and we need to remember to do this daily. A Routine would make it so much better. Thanks

I've done chat with Nest tech support (known for being wrong) and they say it can't be done, not from the thermostat settings, nor using the Google Home app. Not a daily automated routine or schedule. Seems like such a basic feature / function, yet they can't do it. Technology, the ultimate modern day love/hate relationship. Thanks for your help. If you figure out a way please share it. There are many in our area trying to do the same thing.

Ok so... Add a custom action, then type in whatever you normally say to the Nest Speaker Ie. Set Thermostat to 21 Then the routine is executing at the time and is saying what we already know works

@@AutomateYourLife Thank you. Yes, you are correct and that process worked like a charm. It was easier than I expected. At first I was unsure how to do it, so I called the Google Nest support phone number, and they were very helpful and made it easy. Thanks again for al the education.

How do you change the name of a routine? I assume I click on the little edit "wand" thing, but nothing happens.

The wand does nothing. Change the "starter" below it, or the words you use to trigger the routine.

I can't...because it's not possible. Unless you use Alexa to say "Hey Google"....and then you might as well use Alexa.

Amazon Alexa is the best for home automation, it has the most skills,. Also, Google can't add a device to more than 1 room or group; example: kitchen and family room are adjacent to each other and I want the lights in both room to turn off if I say all, as well as independently turning off either room. Alexa is inexpensive so I bought 8 to equip every room with Amazon Alexa for voice control so that I can just ask 'turn off the lights' and the echo in that room knows to turn off those lights and not other lights in the house.

I cannot find the routines option on my Home screen, why is that? Language is set to English and i live in Sweden. Shouldn't Routine be enabled?

That's odd. I'd chat with support.google.com about it and ask them what they think is the problem. There's not much I can point to here, though some people complain every so often about routines not working right. Could be connectivity to your phone being a problem...but that's only if you're using your phone to set the alarm

Just useless that this will not set audio device to phone. I see you have "Kitchen Max" The routines will not autofire at all if you don't have an external audio device and it is in range. Every routine I have tried fails and says "No audio device available" I see no way to delete my good morning routine or any other routine I have created. I have gone to my google account and deleted rountines in the settings but good morning still persists along with the rest. there seems to be no way to disable them. A work day routine can be disabled but I still cannot get it to work for the audio device error I only once saw the option to start when an alarm is dismissed but it never appeared again. I read in the google forums a user's question contained reference to this as well so I know I did not imagine it on my phone.

Right now, there are lots of changes going on with Google's routines in general. Could be that, or could be that your action just isn't working because it's not an action Google Assistant can handle. Make sure you can say the same action to Google Assistant and have it work, or that's why you're getting the notice. After that, talk to support.google.com

How do you share Google Home routines? You can invite householders to your 'home' but they can't use your routines. So now we're in a situation where other householders need to create the same routines for themselves. So daft.

Best you can do is create a shortcut for their phone, but that requires them to be logged into the account.

This is actually what I was searching when I found this video, ha. I'm the only one that can start my routine and it's annoying. Everyone in my household should be able to. And my Google CONSTANTLY thinks I'm my daughter, so I have to say it 3 times 🤦♀️

So here's something that stinks about this. The Lenovo clocks can't trigger a custom routine. Only a Good Morning Routine.
