Can't speak to their cuben tarps (running a superfly tarp myself, dreaming of the day I can justify a cuben tarp or two :P). I've gotten a few quilts from hammockgear though and love them all. I initially got a 20 degree incubator and 20 degree burrow(no overstuff for either) and they've taken me down to the rated temperatures comfortably, once I'd fiddled a bit to get the UQ adjusted up properly to me. A few months ago I got a custom -20 F pair of quilts from them, a short incubator and a regular burrow. Deeper baffles than the normal model and loads of extra down. I've had them out in the back yard and they've been overkill there, no chances yet to take them anywhere near their rated temps. Superb workmanship though and I have no doubts they'll serve me well this winter.

ValeofAldur Thanks for the information. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

neo57611 It's a great option.

For a tarp with doors, you can't go wrong with a superfly. I've been through some crazy winds and snowstorms with it and its proven itself time and time again. Not sure if you've bought a tarp yet at this point, being months after you posted the video. Haha.

i have the xlc with incubator and burrow under and top quilt by hammockgear. excellent combo. fits perfect and love it coupled with my superfly and optional top cover for xlc. works for 4 season just perfectly. enjoy your new gear

Hammock gear makes some very nice gear. I went with in Incubator 40 under quilt. And use A sleeping bag unzipped for the top quilt.

A couple thoughts. I have been using the XLC for a little over a year and still like it! It may take you a few trips to get the angle filed in, once you do try to remember it! It seems to me that it always takes a few adjustments each time I set it up. Guess I'm not getting out enough. Tarps, the HG CF tarps are great Summer tarps, but the sides are only about 4' 6" so there is not a lot of coverage on the sides in the winter to deal with the wind and snow or rain. For winter conditions I suggest getting a large wide tarp, or make your own. Even a 12x10 blue tarp would work, if you can find it, 12x12 works great. Granted these are not real light or super nice looking, but for starting out in the winter it works with out spending a lot of money. Under quilts, I am still working on this, way to much spent on quilts, but thats the learning process. A good insulated pad and some 3' wide reflex or something like that should get you to about 30 degrees with the right sleeping bag. If that's something that you already have I would suggest trying that out first. Winter hammock camping can be something of an acquired taste. Before spending a bunch of cash on new gear, try it out and see how you like it, of course if you got a tone of cash burning a hole in your pocket, go for it! :-D Best of the hang! Wolfman

Wolfgang Greystoke Good point on the tarp. I've looked on the hammock gear website, maybe a custom trap with longer sides will help. I've camped in as low as 10 degrees so I'm not concerned if I'll like it or not. Besides isn't any day in the woods better then work!

You can't go wrong with Hammockgear stuff! Underground quilts.com makes nice UQ. Z-packs has a new UQ (I have not seen any reviews on these yet though and they are expensive)
@EasternMountainHiker9 жыл бұрын
KuntryRD Zpacks stuff is expensive because they use cuben fiber on everything. I haven't heard anything bad about their packs or tarp so they could be an option.

We are looking at going to the hammock setup. The Dream Hammock or Warbonnet Blackbird is our top 2 at this time. We have been trying to find a true 2 person hammock, but the weight ends up more than a tent. Most likely one for each. Bob
@EasternMountainHiker9 жыл бұрын
+uptrail71 A true two person hammock is not that comfortable for two people for very long. I've relaxed in one in our back yard for about an hour with the wife then it's becomes uncomfortable. I couldn't imagine trying to sleep two to a hammock. If your looking for extra room there are a few hammocks that are designed for two but not necessarily camping hammocks. etc. ENO, Grand Trunks, Byer of Maine. Some of the more luxurious hammocks will weigh more then an ultra light tent. As for the Warbonnet XLC I can say it's plenty big enough for me at 6' 3' 230 lbs. And when just sitting in it there is room for two. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

+EasternMountainHiker Thanks for the video and input! I just ordered the Warbonnet Blackbird with the Edge Tarp. Bob
@Detman1018 жыл бұрын
+uptrail71 Aye, hanging in a hammock is an experience where you want your room and space to spread out and get comfortable. Not the time to be scrunched up next to someone getting hit with elbows and knees...lol. My Blackbird is my peaceful fortress away from everyone and everything.
@uptrail71698 жыл бұрын
I bought a Warbonnet Blackbird and a Dutchware Half-Wit hammock. Both are very good hammocks.

uptrail71 Awesome! Good buys! I bought a WBBB when I gave my wife my skeeter beater pro.

Love these videos I'm considering starting hammock camping I haven't before but I live on a woods basically so what would you recommend as a starter hammock and equipment I'll need?
@matthewdumas53425 жыл бұрын
I just got this hammock. How do you prevent “shoulder squeeze?” When I get in and kick over diagonal my shoulders are rolled like I’m in a taco!
@michaelhorn91144 жыл бұрын
I don't have this hammock, but I do have a 30.00 FIELD AND STREAM double hammock. I found it to be the most comfortable when I have a good sag to it. If you hang it to look like it is smiling, you too will be comfortable. Also, you don't want to lay on too much of an angle. You just have to fiddle around with it. You will find the sweet spot. Happy hangings!

I get absolutely no shoulder squeeze or calf ridge either.

great vid! is the ridgeline permanent attached or is it necessary to string a new one everytime

+X BACKCOUNTRY X The ridgeline is attached to the hammock. It is removable but takes some work and is not recommended.

If your handy with a sowing machine you can go the DIY route. Underquilts.com you can buy a shell. Wildernesslogics.com you can its goose down by the ounce I did it and never used a sowing machine prior.

treywilly431 I'm so so with the automatic there injector. I'd like a quality under quilt to start with. Thanks for the info.

Buy an insulted air mattress it will help you on the near or sub 0 trips. I hung in -6* toasty!!

Never insult the air mattress. It can be a deflating experience for the mattress.

If i had a double layer hammock i wouldnt even bother with a underquilt. I would just use the sleeping pad
@EasternMountainHiker8 жыл бұрын
+ethantube98 Underquilts are much warmer. I've purchased one from Hammock Gear and I'm very happy with it.
@blacksunapocalypse7 жыл бұрын
For me the best thing about the pad is that for traveling to unknown areas you can use it for sleeping on the ground, and sitting near a fire or on wet ground during a break.
@d1ppaz7 жыл бұрын
Underquilt all the way when it comes to hammocks! I understand having the pad for versatility but lets be honest, we all do our research before travelling out
