Great review I just got and tested out my Blackbird XLC. I'm 6'4" and can lay straight and flat. Sleeping on my side is also very comfortable. Watching you videos played a big part in helping me sort through all the hammock options out there. Also your Hennessy review helped my girlfriend out that is the hammock she went with.

being a big person at 6'6" i love my blackbird xlc. i also got quilts from arrowhead, the KAW 3 season and with a thermarest zlite i have slept warm to 15 so far. i also have the winter top cover which aids in keeping me warm at night. the craftsmanship on the hammock cottage venders like warbonnet, arrowhead, dutch ect. is second to none. i paired my xlc with a mamjama tarp and again awesome quality.

Excellent review! You answered a lot of my questions on the Blackbird vs the Hennessy Expedition Asym which I have. I also have the Warbonnet Ridgerunner which is super comfy but there are times when the poles and the big tarp are a pain. I like the Hennessy for its fast setup and compact size but I have the same issues with it that you mentioned. Maybe its time to sell it and get a Blackbird. Nice review. I'm a tent guy, but I also have the NeoAir X-Therm pad. It's the most expensive piece of camping gear I own, and it's worth every penny. I can't sleep on the ground without it.

Fantastic info. I have similar gear purchased, but have not had a chance to use it other than day use. It's great to see how it's all going to come together - Warbonnet, Enlightened quilt, and Thermarest. Brand new to hammocks and as someone who is 5'7" I felt like I was not sitting in it correctly, but you've demonstrated just what it should look like. Appreciate you showing how the cinch buckles attach too.

Yup very detailed. Works very well with a big agnes air pad as well and they are almost 4" thick. I'm a big dude at 6'10". Mine is perfect. Double layer. I ordered a single layer. Some mix up. Waiting for my underquilt. Great review. 😊

Thanks for a great review. There are dozens out there about the Blackbird and this is one of the most useful and thorough. No need to sell me though. I've had a Blackbird for 5 years. and just upgraded to the XLC.

Jason, great review. You cover details not in other videos. I have always used tents when backpacking but used a small netless hammock this summer and liked it. The Blackbird XLC was one I considered but today ordered a Hennessy Explorer Ultralite Asym Zip because it was a demo and $101 off the regular price, plus it comes with a rainfly. Hope it will still be comfortable enough. Thanks for all your hammock videos.

So I've watched more reviews and this is still my fav. I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison with the Blackbird XLC. Especially from someone else on the smaller side. I'm a 5'8" 115lb woman. I'm sure the regular BB would be fine, but I wonder if the XLC would keep the bug netting farther from my face at night, and give me more space under the net to sit & read (I live in the southeast so skeeters are a problem at camp). P.S. Shug showed a trick for raising the ridgeline while sitting in the hammock by wrapping it around a carabiner a few times. Then, just remove it when you go to lie down.

I started with the Hennessy and it was a good hammock but I really love my Warbonnet. My Hennessy was one of the old “birth canal” models. The side entry is so much better. I have found it to be a solid 4 season hammock. The convenience or that gear shelf can not be stated enough. Great review, thanks for sharing!

Wooh, my hammock just arrived last night! Ironically, for SoCal, it actually started sprinkling as I set it up in my yard -_- lol. My rainfly is in the mail, so I jerri-rigged my tent fly over it... because I had to try it!

I still use a tent, but Warbonnet Blackbird is on the top of my list. I have been looking around for about 3 months now in no hurry.

I enjoyed your review and basically do the same but with a few minor changes. I leave the carabiners attached to the straps all the time , this way they are there and ready to be used. This is the biggest benefit for me ...Camping in the swamps of Florida and the 10,000 islands ( Everglades ) area. I can vouch for the Warbonnet Blackbird being mosquito proof. Out of all the hammocks I have only two are totally bug proof the Warbonnet Blackbird and the Clark Tropical hammock. Not just talking about just the netting over the top of the two but all the material that makes up the hammocks. Both have been my go to hammocks , for a long time , when camping in buggy areas.Both are side entry hammocks , The Blackbird only on one side and the Clark Tropical , either side. During the night when Mosquitoes on the outside of the hammock look like someone is dumping black pepper past your hammock it is great when you know they can not get to you. My old model of the Hennessy Safari Del. is a bottom entry and the bottom is not bug proof , the would bite threw the bottom material. Back then I wanted to switch to a bug proof side entry. Today Hennessy has a choice of either a bottom or side entry. Plus I understand they have one hammock that is bug proof all the way around. When I am not using the under quilts and use the Therm-A-Rest in a hammock I inflate it about half way so it forms to my body better. For pack-ability in my backpack my Blackbird is the smallest package of my totally bug proof hammocks. The main reason for that is that the rain fly is not attached to the hammock. You have a wide choice of the rain flays since they are purchased separately.

I ordered the Warbonnet Blackbird and Edge tarp today. I'm not sure what I will need for lines and hardware yet, but I'll check around after it comes. I'll check for Black Friday sales for the underquilt . Your video is why I ordered the Warbonnet over the Dream Hammock. I also see that Sintax bought a Dutch Hammock. That also makes me question the Dream Hammock if he switched. Thanks! Bob

Just ordered a XLC based on your review and others. Went with the Mamajamba tarp. Gonna pick up a UQ and hopefully stick the MSR tent in the back of the closet for good. Thanks for the helpful reviews Jason

For $125 you can get the Warbonnet Eldorado. It is the same thing as the Blackbird XLC minus the shelf built into the mosquito net. The Eldorado has the full zip off bugnet that I will eventually upgrade to the XLC winter top with storage shelf. I went for the lighter weight and cheaper entry price for the Eldorado. I haven’t ever had a bunch of stuff in my hammock to store on a shelf so having one without a shelf for now won’t make me feel like I’m missing out on a feature. When I get the winter cover, I figure the shelf will be nice to store extra layers of clothing and/or bedding in. You can also get an Eldorado winter cover without a shelf but I can imagine a shelf in the winter would be very useful. The Eldorado does still have the mosquito net pullout on the one side that your head is near. And the Eldorado has a one ended stuffsack with two loops that clip onto two prusiks that are installed on the ridgeline when you get it. It would surprise me if the Blackbird stuffsack doesn’t also have two loops to connect to the ridgeline if you chose to remove it from the hammock as you hang it. If the Blackbird bag doesn’t have loops, you could just use the cords on either end to tie it up to the ridgeline keeping one end tight and the end facing you a little looser. Without even laying in mine I know it is well worth the $125. And I can upgrade it into a winter Blackbird. After I upgrade to a Blackbird winter cover and use the shelf I might decide I want the shelf in the summer and I can buy that too.

Self inflating sleeping pads work very well in the Hennessy. They do not move around like air pads.

Thanks for mentioning the longer model, at 6'3" most things end up begin little short... this will be my first hammock and that was my major concern. Packed it looks a little larger than I would have guessed, how flexible / compressible is it when in the stuff sack... thinking it will have to bend and conform to my bicycle frame shape a fair amount

been using by xlc all summer for the bug net and decided to shave a little weight this weekend and use my old netless dutch hammock with the whoopies.. I feel like i gave up my tempurpedic for a Costco mattress lol. I cannot get to sleep.. I think I'm gonna have to justify carrying the weight next time lol

I really liked your video of the Zeleski State Forest. Since the epidemic, I've been researching backpacking and plan to splurge on some tougher gear for a long-term hobby. I love to walk. I've hiked 10 miles day hikes my entire life, a year ago I day-hiked 20 miles of the Maumee River in a single day, and recently I've done a shorter overnight hike with my wife along the Manistee River in MI. I would like to try pushing myself in someplace rough like Zeleski. I have an older Field and Stream frame pack and a couple of simple $30 Field and Stream hammocks with tree straps and 'biners. Having a large family to take care of, I don't have endless amounts of $$$ to throw at a hobby, so being a guy of 6' tall exactly, I want to know if I need the Blackbird XLC or if the original Blackbird will be just fine. Buckles sounds great. I like simple. Just not sure about that length...how tall are you? Do you have any 6' friends who use the original? What do they do?

It was funny to go back and watch your Hennessy review. You thought it was so comfortable at the time. Besides the fly, what did you end up not liking? Also what we are thoughts on the Ultralight Backpacker? That’s the one I have but I have my own issues with that. So I’m looking at the Blackbird.

Great review! I have 3 questions: Does the underquilt covers your footbox completly? Whats best: underquilt or pad? Regarding the ridge line in the way of your head when you put out the bug net to seat during the day, it is possible to put a gap breaking it (the ridgeline) in two sections and put a fastener buckler or small hooks? I have been thinking about the blackbird but I have never slept in a hammock but I hear great things about this hammock. I have also been looking at the Amok hammock. None the less a great review. By the way what under quilt did you use.

Great review. Glad to hear the comparisons. I've never done hammocks but I'm thinking about it. but I'm 6' and 250, plus I have a Pit-bull. I was going to ask about the size of the rain fly but it sounds like that is a separate purchase. Maybe just use a tarp from Aqua-Quest? Or do they sell a large rain fly that will cover a bit of a camp area? This may be a dumb question, but can hammocks be done with a dog?

Just wondering if you kept your ENO and Hennessy? And if so, do you still use them from time to time or let friends try them to get them into hammock camping.. This hammock is definitely my next purchase, the XLC. I like the looks of that flat lie you're getting- and that shelf. So far I started with the doublenest onelink, went to the Hennessy Deluxe Asym Zip.. (Seems everyone goes this same route!) And now want this one. I plan on keeping them all- and drag friends out to hopefully get them into this addiction as well. I felt both the ENO and the Hennessy were comfortable laying in- but I'm still not getting the best night sleep out there yet. Still experimenting-and just got an underquilt.. So still learning. I'm a tent backpacker but I have been doing some research into hammocks. I have mostly been looking at bridge hammocks like the Ridgerunner, but after watching your video, I was impressed by some of the features on this one. But comparing them, I'm confused because I expected the price on the Blackbird to be lower than the Ridgerunner. Do you have any explanation as to why that might be?

So what tarp do you use with this hammock? Great review. If I had a butt load of money, I would be replacing my Hennessey with this for myself and my wife.
