After many thousands of kms and a few trips around the world it's time to upgrade my Evade road helmet helmet to the new edition as the sun comes out again for the LONG Aussie summer! The Evade II now comes with MIPS protection and comes with an ANGi sensor as an option. Unfortunately it doesn't repel magpies.....
Wahoo ELEMNT / Specialized ANGi Crash Sensor Integration: • Wahoo ELEMNT Cycling G...
Specs from the Specialized Site:
● Through extensive Win Tunnel development, the Evade is the fastest road helmet Specialized have tested.
● 4th Dimension Cooling System with deep internal channels, large vents, and aligned exhaust ports make it the best combination of aerodynamics and ventilation.
● Patented Energy Optimized Multi-Density EPS construction helps to manage impact energy.
● Patented Aramid-Reinforced Skeleton provides internal EPS support to help manage impact energy.
● Ultra-light Mindset HairPort II micro-dial fit system with height adjustability for the perfect fit.
● Gutter Action brow pad design for increased comfort and sweat management.
● Thin, soft, and lightweight 4X DryLite webbing won’t stretch out with sweat or water.
● Tri-Fix web splitter for improved comfort and ease of strap adjustments.
● Instrap webbing system for ultra-light construction and security.
● MIPS-equipped.
● Integrated ANGi crash sensor.
● Magnetic buckle is simple and secure.

hahah! You're not wrong. Things on this ride that had firmware: Di2 Battery. FD, RD, Levers x2, Di2 climbing switch, helmet sensor, pedals x2, left crank, Varia RTL515, Elemnt Roam, GoPro Hero 8, iPhoneX, HR strap, CORE body temp monitor. And I'm yet to add the Di2 wireless module to this setup. It's all a bit much.... but it's all good fun. :)

It should be noted that for those dudes who think stealth black would be awesome... my first Evade was that - except noticeably too hot any time in the sun above 75F (22.5C?). I switched to a version with a white top/center section which made a huge difference - so much cooler on the head, maybe not as cool looking. End of story... the white version is far more useful. One other point, the Evade is way quieter on a ride than any of the wide open hole Specialized helmets - Prevail, Prospero, etc. Long term usage has been something of a problem for me with any helmet. Usually the brim pad falls apart far too frequently. I've gone through at least 6 brim pads for the Evade. Just once I had success getting the pads warrantied, then the next time Specialized simply said they didn't have any, afterwhich I had to scrounge up some from my LBS. Now I've given up on the brow pads in leau of using random headbands under the helmet - not so great for ventilation though.

Wish I could share your positivity on the Angi sensor. I’ve had mine a year or more now. I think I liked it without the Bolt integration, the nagging that it’s not connected doesn’t instil much confidence. Also tried to recreate your emergency trigger. I had to give the sensor 3 very hard whacks to get it to register an incident. If you have to hit the sensor directly that hard to get it to register I hate to think how hard id have to jolt my head to do the same in the real world.

Might be worth doing a "zwift quick tip" about the oddball categories in this weekends zwift Haute Route event. Very different in that it's a race, but each category isn't wkg based. Simply a way to deal with too many riders in each event.... personally I like the larger ride numbers.

Great review Shane 👍. One question about the pads in the Evade 2. They look a lot more robust/thicker than the ones in the original Evade. Is that the case? It looks like the pads in your old evade did the same thing as mine, i. e. where the outer part detaches from the foam. I'm trying to source replacement pads but nowhere seams to stock them, including Specialized 🙁

As my Garmin 520 got older, it would fire off crash detection notifications on rough roads, especially when I stopped quickly to take a picture or chat with someone. I would turn off the ringing notification but my contact could be notified and, since much of the state where I live has iffy cell service, I might not be reachable. This made my contact very worried. I turned off this Garmin feature. I bet the problem would really be worse if I was riding my gravel or mountain bike.

Had a few Specialized helmets, unlike Shane's, mine never lasted very long - those thin & fragile plastic pieces ( seen at 1.12 - 1.16 ) forming the mips retaining method simply crack and/or snap. I've been riding about 10-15k, every year, rain, hail or shine, for the last 12 years & all over the world - so need reliability, but it's getting harder to find, so now, i just treat my helmet/s as disposables. Sorry Shane, do love your Vids though, as well as, all the other cyclists that do it well on KZfaq and even some of the others - ( just a 'Cheeky' shout out to Harley and all his gals! :):):) Anyway, go for a ride - just wear a helmet, genuine Euro stickers - OK, unless your doing Crit's.... And when you do remember what Jens said "shut up legs" And I'll throw in one for Harley "spin to win" :)

Here in the U.S., the red-winged blackbirds are the true "bastage birds" that we're forced to deal with when we ride! The top of my helmet's been smacked on several occasions!
@Ydegaard
@Ydegaard 3 жыл бұрын
I like the idea about alerting emergency contacts, but it often doesn’t work, and here’s why: I recently had a (non-) incident, that triggered my garmin emergency response during a ride. Two things happened: 1) My phone autodialled emergency services who probably identified my call as a pocket dial and hung up. Not a big help if i had actually been injured. 2) My phone sent a text alert to my dad ,who was in a different country at the time. My dad saw this a while later, and tried to call me, but at that point i had no signal, and he could not reach me. I guess the result would have been the same if i was heavily injured and unable to pick up. A few hours later, he finally got in touch with me, scared out of his mind for my safety. He posed a very relevant question: “What exactly am i supposed to do with the information that you may have crashed?” I think the point is very valid: unless your emergency contact has a car and is within driving distance, they really can’t do much other than worry
@gplama

We've had helmets checked at races. No sticker, no race.

They follow for way.beyond their nests so they really are resident evil. The country one's are worse because they aren't accustomed to.human pedestrians. I hope the helmet keeps cool inour summers, it looks sleek. I'm incredulous

No They are not. Got swooped 3 times on a 1.5 hour ride yesterday, fortunately they all seemed like half hearted efforts,and a wave of the hand in the air stopped them .

In-built crash detection only any use if you have someone at home who gives a f*ck about you. In my case only the cat.

Worthless without the sticker? If I deside to do a race in Australia and come from outside, I have to buy a new helmet? :-(

By the rule book, yes. Nothing to worry about for a while. The borders are closed.

Maggies. Can’t stand them. Don’t like the birds much either.

I love magpies! Very smart birds. They'll usually let you know they're coming so it's just head down and start sprinting.
