Updating to the Specialized Evade III Aero Helmet // A Few Things To Know....

I've always been a fan of the Evade aero road helmets since they launched back in 2013, and I typically upgrade as each new revision is released. The Evade III was the exception. It was too expensive here at launch (recently dropping in price!) and Specialized quietly changed up a few other things that I cover in this video. Side Note: This helmet is yet to be 'Magpie Tested'. This will happen soon. They're just sharpening their beaks for swooping season! ⛑️🦅

I had a recent crash with impact to my neck and collarbone, but no impact to my head or strap. I did not roll on the crash, and for some reason my Evade II helmet came off. So while the magnetic clasp is kinda cool, my guess is Specialized went with a more secure clasp. My Evade II is an awesome helmet!!

I find the fact that they haven't mentioned ANY DATA upon Evade III launch quite concerning. Their previous marketing strategy was extremely data-driven and I feel that a simple "Better ventilation and same aerodynamic" doesn't cut it anymore. I would be extremely interested in a direct wind tunnel testing between the Evade II and Evade III, but I haven't found such a comparison yet. I wouldn't be surprised if the Evade III came out worse. This seems like an innovation for the sake of innovation, not for the sake of improvement.

I've had all 3 versions of the Evade, and ridden many miles in each. I think Evade II was the best. It was a bit lighter than the III and I loved the magnetic buckle. Better fit for my noggin too. Also, I think the key to ventilation on these aero helmets is to have a good exhaust vent for air to escape. With the III they put a big blocky support pillar right in the middle of the exhaust vent.

Absolutely agree it is difficult to find helmets that fit. One thing particularly annoying is what you called the "lollypopped" shape which is seemingly ubiquitous in the industry. Why do they all ride so high? Who has ears that big? Lol. I love the comfort of POC helmets and I have an evadeII I wore a few times. Thanks to this video I am absolutely not tempted in the least to upgrade. I have since landed again on Gyro which tend to fit me the best over the years. I love Kask but unfortunately their otherwise excellent pads run front to back from the brow and I've found the points at the front of these grind little dents in my forehead after a few hours riding. Anyway I have about ten helmets lying around and am still not 100% satisfied. Maybe I need skull surgery!

Shane, What size head do you have? - yes I'm trying to buy a helmet without trying it at the bike store 1st... I am self measuring at about 58.5 centimeters and I'm wondering if I need a medium or large. Evade 2 checks all the boxes for me. It would be my first bike helmet ever-- yes, I've been riding in a baseball cap backwards for six years now!, so i'm not concerned about ventilation and air flow etc at all. In fact, I need a helmet that would be aero and provide speed and substantial coverage to ride it in all types of weather, including colder months. Would you say Evade 2 is a good choice? Evade II he’s nowhere to be found anymore (with the exception of some shoddy website in Indonesia…) so I think I’m going to settle on MET Manta MIPS. It looks awesome. It’s light., and there’s some good deals for size medium. Do you have any experience with this brand by any chance? Also, I wanted to ask you about the magnetic clasp (MET helmets come with that). - Is it easy to operate? And is it convenient/possible to lock with one hand?- This is essential for me because I have limited mobility in my right hand., so a regular clasp would be a pretty big inconvenience. Therefore magnetic seems to be the way to go…. Thanks in advance for any insights.

Here's what I know. There is not a god dam major player in the helmet industry that makes a road helmet with a god dam visor. Hello? 99.9% of all road rides are during the day... WHEN THE SUN IS OUT. And no, wearing Darth Vader dark sunglasses isn't a viable option. A) They don't actually 'block' the sun from shining in your eyes. B) They make riding in the shade dangerous. - They all used to though. Giro, Limar, Specialzed, etc... All used to offer a visor option...

@@hankschrader2353 Um, 99% of riders aren't doing time trials. And MOST riders ride after work, you know, later afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky. (Especially in the spring and fall). And a whole lot of us live where there are trees. So riding with super dark shades in and out of tree shadows doesn't work either... For the hundreds of dollars these helmets cost, adding a $15 plastic clip on visor isn't asking for too much... (Remember, MOST helmets used to come with a visor option)...

“Definitely worth trying one in store before ordering online”? That’s not what I’d expect from you. If I ran a bike shop and people just came in to try my stock on before ordering online, I’d be pretty grumpy. But I’m sure that’s not what you meant. 👍

@gplama Жыл бұрын
My experience for this was the Specialized pop-up store at the Tour Down Under. They had a size M, but not in the colors I wanted. I tried it on and was then confident in ordering the right size online. Specialized wasn't out of pocket. I see how that could be taken the wrong way... but I'd expect a bike store to 1) Match the online price and make the sale right there. 2) Be happy they have foot traffic. Take the time to sell them something else while they're there.
@jeffawiggins
@jeffawiggins Жыл бұрын
I picked up on this as well. My wife works at a local cycling clothing shop and so many people come in to try on stuff with zero intention of buying or even checking on a price match type of option. If it’s way cheaper online sure it likely can’t be matched but to start with that approach just hurts a LBS. Shoes are probably the worst offenders for trying on at a LBS and then heading online with helmets a close second. If a size and colour of an item aren’t available they will bring them in from the distribution partners quite quickly where possible.
@KeatB
@KeatB Жыл бұрын
@@gplama reasonable and I’m usually a big fan of your approach to stuff like this, but expecting a shop to price match online isn’t feasible, at least not here in the UK where the costs of maintaining a physical presence far outweigh those of any online only retailer.
@gplama
@gplama Жыл бұрын
If an LBS who is under licensing/contract to sell Specialized equipment (which I assume also comes with exclusivity arrangements) can't match what they're selling them for online, they can and have it out with Specialized HQ. At the end of the day I'm on the consumer side with this one. AU$475 on the shelf in January was too much for me. A few months later they were $325 online delivered, from a LBS in Darwin who also have an online presence.
