This is a game changer!! Check out this tour of my new Lance 975 Truck Camper. A truck camper allows me to tow my boat, but also allows me to remove the camper when I get to my camper site, and then have the truck free to travel to and from the ramp!

Niiice! As an aside, having more power than you need, with these newer engines, significantly improves fuel consumption. Cabovers, though, are the worst. Have you driven the truck long enough to get a good idea of your gas mileage? Have you done much driving without the camper to do a decent comparison? And you probably know this but....the long arm jacks with the remote is also a game changer. Quick and easy driving out from under the camper (you can raise it up, level it and pull the truck out in less than 5 minutes. And you can drop it down low to the ground when it is standing on its own feet. I would sure feel better with the camper locked and lowered with remotes and keys in the cab of the truck when I have to go anywhere without the camper. Makes it tougher for someone to drive under it and haul it away. Put a couple of very discreet cameras on all 4 sides with motion detectors when you are on the water. Nahhhh....how often do you get a signal when you are out on your boat? Really nice rig. Thanks for sharing!

Personal preference......single-rear wheel. For off-road capability if nothing else. Especially in deep sand.....Outer Banks.....etc. And the payload capacity CAN handle the Lance 975 and 995.......and even the 1062 alright. Obviously there's a LOT more wiggle room with the dually. But the '900' series is specifically made to cater to the SRW or DRW crowd (long-bed). The 1100 series? You need a dually......Period. In any event, I like your setup. Including the truck.....(I have a Ram 3500 long-bed Cummins 4X4....). Happy truck camping! 👍
@SonarFishing
@SonarFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Thats great to hear that you have a good experience with your SRW. Obviously, I lack the experience with different setups since I’m a newbie to this whole deal so I’m glad to hear some different perspectives. I have heard similar opinions on SRW versus DRW when it comes to off-road ability. Have you had any experience towing a trailer (comparable to a boat) with the truck camper? Does a SRW do a suitable job with the additional towing weight too?
@dsn1964
@dsn1964 4 жыл бұрын
So long as your payload and tongue weight don't exceed your max payload you'll be fine. If you (and you said you are) are routinely carrying a camper that heavy and a large boat AND are mostly (if not all) pavement-bound, you probably have the best setup. I mean, 6000 + lb payload vs 4400 or so payload is quite a bit of difference. I never had much of an issue with 'sway' while towing. I'm not really sure that the dually is made for more 'stability' and anti-sway.....as it is built to put a crapload of rubber on the surface to handle a higher payload. Sure. It's a little wider.......But a 1-ton suspension and axle is still a 1-ton suspension and axle. Whether you have 4 tires back there or two. You should check out the youtube channel 'The Fast Lane' truck. They do a LOT of comparisons hauling massive loads up and down 'Ike's Gauntlet'.......Gas vs Diesel.......3/4 ton.....1 ton.......Dually vs SRW........Hell. They had a matchup between a Duramax 2500 vs a Ram 3500 dually. Pretty interesting stuff.
@dsn1964
@dsn1964 4 жыл бұрын
@@SonarFishing Oh yeah.....and when I mention going to the Outer Banks on the sand and stuff, towing a boat wouldn't be a factor in those instances. Just the camper.I DO own a boat, however....and tow it (21' Carolina Skiff). And regarding your Lance 975........I'm looking at a 975 vs a 995. Great campers.

Why dually verses a single? I'm also getting a ram 3500, but with the Hemi 6.4L. The payload on the single, regular cab is 4600 pounds.
@SonarFishing
@SonarFishing 4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what camper you buy and whether or not you are looking to tow anything behind. As far as my camper, I am around 4300-pounds with all my optional equipment. With standard equipment I’d be at 3800ish, so for the sake of the conversation, lets use that to compute what we are really looking at. At a 4600lb payload capacity (which is pretty darn good for a SRW) you have 800lbs to play with after loading the camper. Since Payload capacity includes the driver and passengers in the car, you will need to deduct your weight and any passengers. If you and the passengers weigh a total of 400lb you only have the same amount left for any gear, food, or additional equipment, and that’s assuming you dont have any of the optional equipment installed on your camper or truck. If you plan on towing anything you will be well over capacity at that point and likely wont be very happy with how it handles overall. The reason I am going into detail on this is because, like you, I REALLY wanted to stay with a SRW. Since this truck is also my daily driver, I was trying so hard to stick with a SRW at all costs, but in the end, if you want to go with a SRW (even a one-ton) you are realistically looking at a camper that is closer to the 3000-lb range. I can tell you from my own experience that I am very happy with my decision to go DRW for handling, and my ability to tow without worry. Another thing guys dont think about is the affect that an extension hitch will have on the towing capacities on a truck. I have a 4-foot extension hitch for my camper to tow my boat. This setup, I’m told, can reduce towing capacity by 50% just due to the effects of the added leverage. I was in your shoes when I was trying to figure this all out. In the end, it comes down to whether you want a truck to fit a camper you like, or whether you choose the camper based on the truck you like. Personally, Ill go dually every time now that I know how easy it was to learn to drive, and the peace of mind that comes with not getting too close to the capacities. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching and commenting. -Sonar

*Uhhh, OK. Dude, I don't know what you're getting so worked up about ? Your Truck RV doesn't have anything special that any other make or model doesn't have these days (??) Most Truck Campers as of 2021 are all 4 seasons ready, and having a fuel based genny is a step backwards IMHO. Today you can have a solar charged and operated electric generator, which is silent, doesn't need to be constantly fed fossil fuels, plus they have the full RV 30 Amp plug on them. Check out the latest solar genny's from Bluetti and EcoFlow and throw your Onan genny in the garbage. Tip, you can carry slightly more weight on a smaller pickup truck if you place the exact center of gravity of your truck camper right above the rear axel. You will also get less top heavy rocking on uneven roads. You wanna see a nice Truck RV camper ? Check out the Host Industries "Mammoth" truck bed camper. Now THAT'S a truck camper RV !*

I just paid 18.5k for a hard side Palomino that has everything yours has, except the generator. And to be honest, mine looks cooler grey gel with black trim. Matches my black Cummins and cargo trailer. Left me with enough money to put a badass solar system in it. I never understood why people pay so much for Lances.

The Dudester if the Palomino fits your needs and holds up to use, then it’s going to be a great choice for you. For me, Lance has a long track record of making premium campers, and with as much time as I spend on the road it seemed like the best option. I’m sure we both will enjoy our campers.
