Homeschool Dad here! We are excited to read more missionary biographies this year too. As someone who did years of long-term mission work in the past, I think it is so important to present mission work as a legitimate opportunity for young people (whether that be foreign mission or bringing Christ's kingdom into their local community). There are so many books in that Heroes Then and Now series, that we're having a difficult time choosing which ones to use - but I guess that's a good problem to have :)

We homeschooled all of our children, who are now grown and out of the home...all except our 28 yr old autistic daughter, she will always be home..and we love it...she loves still reading about historical times and places...to the point, we are making our spare room a library/reading/craft/office area...so excited to add some of these books to our library ❤️❤️❤️

The Ology is awesome and is a systematic theology book for kids. I did it with my high schoolers down to elementary. We snatched up the bird unit when it came out and did it for Spring. James Audubon book was great. And we also have enjoyed the YWAM missionary books. They are a favorite of 14 years of homeschooling. Love your videos. Found out about TGATB from you 🥰.

My kids and I loved Lady Cake Farm! Excellent choice! We just read A Loyal Foe. It has suspense through out so my kids didn't ever want me to stop reading. It is more difficult and plot is intricate and may be harder for under 10 to understand even as a read a loud. So great for teaching loyalty and honor in a story though. It is a Good and Beautiful Library book.

We went through The Ology this year. Good stuff. We are currently reading The Green Ember with my 13 and 9 year olds. I was afraid they'd be aging out of it (I think it says 8-12 yrs), but they're right in the thick of it. Reminds me of a younger Lord of the Rings type series.

Great choices! A just for fun book series we have been enjoying as a family is The Vanderbeekers. Its about a family of 7 living in Harlem, New York. The siblings are always banding together to help others and at times it goes well and others it doesn't and they learn great lessons in the process. I feel it has high moral and is very sound lessons. The ages of the siblings range from 11-2 in the first book and the newest they were 14-5. These books will make you laugh, warm your heart, make you cry, and show you how a strong family bond can face anything! We take a long time to read these because we don't want to story to end! I hope you guys enjoy them as much as we have.

Did you ever read the book “The Secret Zoo”? We have that on our list and it’s supposed to be somewhat suspenseful. It’s part of a series too. We are doing our first year of sonlight With my kids so I’m excited to introduce missionary stories to them. I put on torchlight series with Jim Elliot and my son fell in love so he picked out our first one on Jim Elliot and then we will read the ones with our sonlight package. We are using an older version so I’m going to buy a few of the new books that were on the list including “The Ology”.. You inspired me with literature based learning and I am so happy I can marry sonlight and TGATB together this year to see how it works for us. The Wingfeather saga is supposed to be a Christian fantasy series like lord of the rings type also.

Hey Ashlee! I'm not sure if anyone else has commented with either of these suggestions, but apologies if they have! Anyway, a book that I've listened to and really enjoyed was Charlotte's Web by EB White (I seem to have missed out on reading it in my childhood so am glad I've caught up with it even though I'm 43!☺) I found a version on Audible that was narrated by the author and it was great! The other series I am working my way through is the Little House in the Big Woods series, though maybe your boys might find the first one a bit girly! There was a TV series called Little House on the Prairie shown early Sunday afternoon when I was growing up which I really enjoyed - think it was interspersed with The Waltons! - and I read the first book when I was about 12/13. I haven't got to the others in the series yet, but perhaps you've read through them all already! I hope you are feeling a bit better and less tired. Expect you're all looking forward to some time away in the camper though I hope too that you and your husband also manage a trip away very soon. Did you get your money back from the other place? 🤞 Take care and thank you for all your videos! xx

Corrie Ten Boom The Hiding Place, The Chocolate Soldier: Heroism: The Lost Chord of Christianity (A Deeper Christian Classic) The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Winnie-the-Pooh: Classic Edition and Peter Rabbit, Hatchet series, The Lord Of The Rings, The Pilgrim's Progress, Where the Red Fern Grows, Sterling North Rascal, Patricia M. What age did you start reading those to your kids? I would like to start reading those but didnt know if maybe my kids are too young. Also, do you use these books to go along with any of your history curriculum or are they separate read alouds? So two questions…. How many minutes do you a lot for these read alouds? My morning time seems to always be an hour to an hour and a half bc our Bible study takes so long some days. But I want to make read alouds (like the yWAM) more of a priority. So to get through the 4 books you showed, do you think 10 minutes a day? Or more? And then #2… Are there any YWAM stories that were your absolute favorites? Which ones are MUST reads to hook somebody? I’m going to assign some of these to my kids for individual reading also. 😊

How much time per day do you typically spend doing read-alouds? This was an area I totally failed at this past year (1st homeschooling year with 4 of my 6 kids homeschooling). How?! How did you get so much reading done when they were younger?! I have now a 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and prek., but this past school year we went through 4 chapter books, 1 blood from Masterbooks, and maybe 7 picture books. I want to be able to read that much to my kids, but they just won't sit and behave for long. Once they are done with copy writing, they start messing with each other and I have to get onto them more than I can get any reading done.
