OMG YES!!! The X-Men mean so much to me, the comics, the adaptations for media. Literally anyone who is marginalized can find inspiration and substance in their allegories. As someone who is queer, the queer allegory has always been so important to me. I'll never forget that in the comics in the 90's some of the writers wanted to do a storyline about the AIDS crisis and when they were told no they did an allegorical story about it. The X-Men are just *really* something special.

The cage fight in which we meet Logan/Wolverine is not a fight between two mutants. Logan was keeping his mutant powers a secret, so he was kinda cheating. The X-Men comics were created in 1963 to reflect the times of prejudice and racism and the fight against it. Charles and Magneto reflect the two head of that fight. Charles believes passive protest and emotional connection to achieve unity, never retaliating with hatred. Magneto has some similar philosophies of those like Malcolm X, “push me and I will push back”. Protecting his own kind against the threat of evil [humanity] by whatever means.

Stan Lee came up with mutants so he wouldn't have to explain how each character got their powers. The social commentary started more during the Claremont era. Not true, Stan created mutants so he didn't need to give every character an origin story, Magneto was a one note villain and most humans respect and even idolise the x men. Chris Claremont later adds the anti mutant bias but it was based on the Holocaust, with magneto being based on an Israeli prime minister who was a terrorist in 1944 but won the nobel peace prize 30 years later. He specifically said that the deaths of both MLK and Malcolm X were too recent to base characters on them.

Simple way to think about the two sides of the argument. Magneto- Malcolm X, Xiaver- Martin Luther King Jr. As the comics developed, writers began to model them after these two because they both wanted what was best for their people, but believed in different ways of achieving that goal. Xiaver is an idealist who believes in humanity's ability for good and acceptance, while Magneto is a realist who experienced the worst of humanity.

x-men is one of the biggest part of marvel, up until the avengers movies came out, this team AND fantastic four were the biggest teams in the comics. The basic x-men comics throughout the decades evolved into countless comic titles, so it isn't just x-men but x-force, x-factor, wolverine, new mutants, hellions, generation x, ETC ETC, the number of comic titles focusing on mutants/x-men characters are possibly even in the hundreds. The movies get a lot of things wrong, mostly the characters, their personality, who they are, because that is the x-men. While the avengers comics mostly focused on just teamwork, superhero stuff, stopping large threats, the x-men mostly focuses on characters, acceptance, co-existence and representation. While the movies got a lot of these things wrong, because the studio mainly focused just on the variety of the powers and putting in big actors, every x-men animated series PERFECTLY adapts the comics, the character's personalities and the family that the x-men are.

A 24 year old movie with themes that still hold up well today. Xavier and Magneto are very different than typical heroes and villains they both want their kind to live and prosper but go about it on completely different ways. Xavier wants co-existence between mutants and humans he is the optimist the idealist. Magneto is the jaded cynic he only sees survivor through show of strength and if mutants survive he will gladly wipe out the humans for it. Their ideologies also extend to their respective teams. The X-men are Xavier’s children his family and they work as a team. Contrasts with the Brotherhood who only seek yo follow Magneto’s will even the way they fight the X-men fight together against one of Magneto’s underlings. Yeah Wolverine was the star despite the movie being an ensemble. Funny thing Hugh Jackman was not considered the main pick for the role since at the time he wasn’t physically fit but now its hard to think anyone else could be Wolverine. Back then when I first saw this movie I didn’t think much of Cyclops but now knowing what I know as a comic fan they really did Scott dirty.

For me I found X-Men through the comics in the 80s, they were my first real comic book love. I think generally their villains are better than the average Avenger villain because so often they have a reason for doing what they are doing and it is almost never about money. (that does not mean their are not bad ones because comics but there are so many more interesting ones. Magneto hates humanity driven by the holocaust, and so he is a compelling person because his whole concept is to protect Mutants against Humanity "by any means necessary" He is not some rich guy just wanting to gain more money or power. The fact that he is the flip side of Charles in opinion makes him stand out even more. I also like the story of the X-Men, a group based on fighting against discrimination and hatred by saving those that despise them which they have to do in order to be heroes. They have always been very interesting. X-Men series is a complicated one with ups and downs but some of them are my favourite super hero movies.

Someone already suggested the original X-Men animated series (1992) and it's a fantastic summary and far more accurate than the FOX movies. Plus after you're done you can watch X-Men '97 which is the best thing Marvel has done in years! The Jewishness of the X-Men creators (Jack Kirby, Stan Lee) and the best X-Men writer (Chris Claremont) strongly influences the characters. Xavier and Erik have a MLK v. Malcolm X thing, but they're also both two sides to "Never again." Charles believes that "never again" applies to all peoples. Erik (who is Jewish) believes it applies to his people (mutants) and that any action is justified to prevent another Holocaust. There's times they're both right and times they're both wrong, but Magneto has increasingly become an anti-hero over the decades. ♥

X-men 2000, I think, was the movie that made Hollywood finally realize that good comicbook movies could be a goldmine. Soon after this we got the Rami Spiderman movies and it took off from there. To top it off the x-men is a franchise whose themes revolve around the issues you mentioned, like prejudice which can be a difficult topic to tackle. As for who directed this movie... Bryan Singer is a scumbag who we don't like to talk about, even though he made some good movies

In the comics "Homo sapiens" refers to regular humans, while mutants are sometimes referred to (usually by people like Magneto) as "Homo superior".

“How did you do that? How did you know?” Aside from the claws and healing, Wolverine’s got high smelling senses just like a dog. He can track what someone’s hiding or where someone is.

I’m so mad I missed this on Patreon, glad I got it now. Recommend checking out X-Men either on Marvel Unlimited or in Epic Collections if you want to read more. And if you missed the analogy, think of it this way - think of the mutant cause as civil rights in the 1960s. Magneto’s point of view is analogous to Malcom X, Charles’s is analogous to Martin Luther King Jr. Just depends on your perspective who is right - aggressive resistance or passive resistance.

You should check out the 1992 X-Men animated series. Alongside Batman: TAS, which aired at the same time, it is still one of the best superhero shows ever made.

@@MegMageReactsAlso like Batman: TAS, X-Men is also part of a wider interconnected universe of other shows, including Spider-Man (1994), Fantastic Four (1994), Iron Man (1994), and The Incredible Hulk (1996) Although since Iron Man, Fantastic Four, and Hulk aired on a different network, some people and sources tend to mistake them for being in a different continuity, but there's not really much to suggest that, and some characters on every show will cameo or gueststar on others, often with the same design and/or voice actors (although not always) In fact, X-Men '97 more or less confirms that each show are connected, with one glaring continuity error, the details of all I will not get into, due to them being spoilers There are a few other shows from that era like Silver Surfer, Spider-Man Unlimited, and Avengers: United They Stand that do contradict details and plotlines, and thus are not part of the 90s Marvel Animated Universe

Mutations are mostly random, but their are some cases where there is a certain mutations that can runs through a bloodline that can be similar in nature or evolve through generations, or I some cases a power can be directly passed down. Like in the comics, Cyclops has 2 younger brothers that also have energy based abilities. Cyclops has concussive optic blasts, Havok can emit energy waves of plasma from his body, and Vulcan, the youngest brother can manipulate, control and absorb vast amounts of energy.

The movie is a good way to introduce the concept of X-Men. That said it only introduces the BASIC concept of it. All the movies take liberties with the source material. If you actually want to watch a comic accurate take then the 1990s animated series is still the best one.

Erik (Magneto) and Charles (Prof X) both recognize that they each want what's best for mutants. They strongly disagree on just what is best and how to get there, but they each recognize the other as someone who thinks he's doing the right thing. And they deeply respect one another. A parallel would be (if you could find some good politicians - which might be difficult) two senators, one on the left and one on the right, who each want what's best for this country but don't agree on what that is. Or when they were alive, Justice Antonin Scalia and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, about as far apart as you can get in their political beliefs, thoroughly enjoyed debating each other and each recognized the other as a great legal mind. And they were reportedly good friends.

Interestingly, Rogue's struggled for a very long time with her powers but, and i might be misremembering, i believe at one point it was confirmed that her powers activating and sending that boy into a coma during their kiss traumatized her and her subconscious put her powers into "always on" mode to prevent it from happening again. Once that became clear, Xavier (?) Helped her process and deal with the trauma which allowed her to not only turn her powers off but begin learning control, such as only borrowing a mutant's powers without draining life force etc.
