My favorite cessna is the 170, my uncle has a 1949 170A model, zero dihedral wing and stock engine, great fun to fly..

Found and watched several of your videos this evening. That’s a great looking 170, really enjoy the videos. Considering a 170 myself, did not make it Lake Ridge this year but maybe 2023!

Thanks! It’s been fun working on it, it finally has the capability I wanted! 170s are definitely great planes!!! Hopefully I’ll see you at Lake Ridge this spring.

I’ve flown the 170 but this one with the engine upgrades to the IO-370 is the one I would love to come out and check it out for myself

It definitely wakes the plane up, so far I’m trying to capture some numbers, but the cruise (speed/burn) is nice too

Good morning Kevin there is one that has a 210 HP for sale which to me with that much horsepower why would you need it and yours is the perfect one . Power settings are going to fun in ways you want to go faster or slower depending on the altitude you want to be flying at .

How did the weight and balance end up with the new engine and prop? I'm curious as to how much, if any, was the weight increase?
@KevinRudisill
@KevinRudisill Жыл бұрын
My O-300 had a lightweight alternator & starter, so my weight did actually go up a little, but the CG stayed basically the same. My CG now is exactly the same as it was prior to the engine,prop, and bushwheels…. I gained 40lbs, but I think I would have easily broken even with the original heavy generator & starter .

Nice 170! I believe Stoots also has an stc for an IO-390, what are your thoughts on that engine?
@KevinRudisill
@KevinRudisill Жыл бұрын
Thanks! He does have it for the 175 but I’m not sure about the 170. I don’t know too much about the 390 but imagine it will drink a little more fuel. I think one of the benefits of the 370 is it’s fast power response on final & once I get up higher and cruise at 7-8k I think this thing will sip a lot less gas getting to new places.

What did the engine swap cost with panel upgrade? I really want to do this.
@KevinRudisill
@KevinRudisill Жыл бұрын
Do it! It performs so well! I hate to say it depends/ call Dave Stoots for a quote, but with Covid affecting prices over the past 2 years, give Dave a call and chat. I’m releasing a video tomorrow with performance info and takeoff videos and such. I spent about $6k on the panel, doing the work myself & having an EAA buddy & another friend make a cad file & cut the panel. Also keep in mind your engine & prop resale price depends on your condition but I got almost $9k for my engine, prop, accessories. So that helps stretch the budget.

What was the overall cost of the engine conversion?
@KevinRudisill

The STOOTS STC is a complete package….I got the IO-370, 83” hartzell trailblazer, all hardware (motor mount,fuel pump,baffling,control cables, JPI engine analyzer w/ fuel flow, starter,alternator) for $70K, sounds like a lot, but everything is factory new zero time, and after selling off the old engine,prop,accessories it’s closer to $55-60k ish total cost.
@coorsleftfield

What STC did you use for that engine? Total cost with the motor and install ?
@KevinRudisill
@KevinRudisill Жыл бұрын
This is the Dave Stoots STC, look up Stoots aviation based in Fairbanks, AK. he’s mentioned in the AOPA pilot mag since he’s helping convert the AOPA sweeps Cessna 170B! Give him a call and talk about pricing (unfortunately Covid has made this a little more expensive since I’ve done mine). I performed the work as a licensed A&P, so no real install price, his it comes complete with hardware and everything needed, except consumables. 1 STC for prop & engine….. I’m going to post a video tomorrow with some performance numbers and takeoff vids.

I purchased my kit this spring, engine is supposed to ship this week. Pricing has probably changed since then. As far as the STC itself, it was the lowest cost kit of the three I looked at, a little over $16k. The engine is factory new from Continental, about $45k. Prop is also new, just under $17k. Install is supposed to be about 60 hours of labor.
