New-ish Psyche Comps, PB Conspiracy, Dr. John, and more

The "Nuggets" comps just got another re-release, this time on color vinyl. Also there's a new psyche comp that blends the classics with new material the really works well. I talk about albums from the Peanut Butter Conspiracy and Dr. John, as well as, one of those so-called "psychedelic rock" albums that's really more like Three Dog Night.

What I've learned about "psych" records like Phoenix, if it's there for $9.99 with psych hype it's probably gonna be garbage. PBC is terrific though!

I saw peanut butter conspiracy live in 1966 I was 11 years old it was the first live concert I ever saw it was on a CBS television afternoon variety show in the audience was mainly older people that are all gone now and peanut butter conspiracy came out and just rocked they were super loud and I loved it people in the audience were freaked out

I have the LP boxed set. While I'm not normally fussed about coloured vinyl, it would've been nice if they were in the LP boxed set. I also have the 12 volume Rhino Nuggets series which was my first exposure to this music. Great video Robert. Cheers mate 👍😊

Once again invading Gordon's quiet sleeping area... Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is my favorite movie soundtrack. I know that the singer in the movie and the singer on the original lp soundtrack are different. But had no clue regarding any connection to the Peanut Butter Conspiracy (but I do have all three albums). I also have the entire themed Nuggets collection (12 albums). Well, actually all but one. I just placed an order for that one on Discogs.

The Nuggets box is an absolute belter. I think there was also a version concentrating on British psychedelia, but I've not heard it.. There used to lots of vinyl albums with random 60s garage bands in the 80s, and they were surprisingly good too. Mayhem and Psychosis, Texas Flashbacks, and Basement Walls were particular favourites of mine. Great to hear The Bonzos getting a mention, by the way!

The Nuggets II box also included groups from Europe, South America, Canada, Australia & New Zealand. Great complement to the first box

I have the same version of the Dr John album. The cover is one of the best, it really stands out from other albums. I think all his first 10 albums are flawless there is nothing bad on any of them and some of them are really amazing. I got the Pebble's box set years ago which I think without checking is the first 6 volumes of Nuggets comp's. They are all fantastic, I also have a surf themed volume of nuggets which is also really good. You're right they need to reissue all of them. Speaking of The Meters backing Dr John they also backed Robert Palmer on "Sneakin' Sally through the Alley" which I bought a couple of months back soon as I found out it was The Meters. It's a great album and is the beginning and also probably the end of my Robert Palmer collection lol. I'm going to check out the Peanut Butter stuff, I have them on comps but I'll be giving the albums a listen. Gordon is great Robert, He's like I'm in the room I really want to listen to you speak about vinyl, soon as you start speaking he's like "nerd, I'm outs here" Thanks for the videos I always enjoy them and find new stuff to check out.

I've had the Nuggets Vol. 1 and 2 box sets for decades. Great, essential stuff. Gordon looks at you like, "There he goes again. I'm outta here." He's probably plotting his own KZfaq channel to show you how to really get it done. You know how big cat videos are.

I would love for you to make a video covering the different genres of music and the characteristics that define each genre with albums as examples. Examples like garage rock, stadium rock, space rock, funk, psychedelic rock, San Francisco sound, etc.

oh yah - Beyond the valley of the dolls Written by Roger Ebert and Directed by Russ Meyer check out Bonzo Dog Band in the U.K. series Do Not Adjust Your Set also if you can find the R rated version of Death Cab there is a shot of John Lennon watching the show

I wish I had that cat problem. I picked up that Nuggets Vol. 2 and it is fantastic. I had to order the first one online so I’ll have both soon. Both the newer pressing. I’ve heard of the Peanut butter Conspiracy, I will keep an eye out for that one.

Interesting information on the PBC. I have PBC 1st album. Psychedelic Nuggets Vol 2 is it the same as the 1st 4 cd 💿 box set? They have had 3 Psychedelic Nuggets box sets Thanks for sharing.

Yes, it's the same as the discs in the first cd box set. Hopefully, they will release the second cd box on vinyl with the British psyche.

I think Gordon just wants to make sure he doesn't interfere with your shoot. Very considerate. Maybe the meaning of The Peanut Butter Conspiracy is itself a conspiracy... I always just pictured they were insanely stoned when they came up with it. Then again, I thought the same about The Chocolate Watchband. Turns out the name is brilliant and not just the ramblings of the intoxicated. That Dr John song seems like it would work for a Rocky montage, at least by the lyrics. Cracked up at the overuse of "psych" when selling records. Sellers on eBay will put like "ACID FUZZ PSYCH" in the title for a Simon & Garfunkel record, haha.

Cool Dr. John album, saw him and the Meters many times at Tipitina's. Allen Toussaint plays some keys on that one, I think. Pretty sure Bonnaroo is "best on da street" in NOLA French. Gris-Gris is great...Gumbo is good too, but its all trad New Orleans stuff. Nice picks!

HISTORY OF THE BONZOS has "Intro and Outro" where the band vamps and compère Viv Stanshall introducing more instruments played by wackier and wackier persons ("Looking very relaxed, Adolph Hitler, on vibes. Nice!"). Stanshall would later repeat the bit, introducing all the instruments on Mike Oldfield's TUBULAR BELLS. Nice!

I've had the first PB Conspiracy album for years (kinda has a Mamas & Papas type sound) and had never heard that hilarious story about that the name means. But I do recall reading about some of those crazy ways to get out the draft in that book "1966" By Jon Savage. Those psych comps sound pretty awesome, I've had the black vinyl reissue of Nuggets for years, but didn't know about Vol. 2 until I saw this video. I just can't get past The Lovin' Spoonful kicking it off. I mean I like that band, but they're not Nuggets material to my ears. I guess I'd like to think that real garage rock was never on major labels, and this is where Crypt Records Back From the Grave series and the Pebbles comps get it just right. That said, if my local record shop gets Nuggets 2 I'll grab a copy. And that Psychedelique comp sounds promising, though I've heard all those songs on album one, it'd be worth it just to have The Eyes "When The Night Falls" on vinyl.

@@RobertFithen I got most of mine at Record Stop in Charleston. I lived there for many years and still go visit family there every once in a while. I put those dang things on the credit card last time I was there. A friend gave one or two of his Pebbles albums. I've ordered a few from Discogs. They're great, but they are pretty hard to find, and they do all kinda sound the same after a while, but not really. Just different flavors of the same dish.
