To understand TMR you have to get into the "groove" of the music. Once you "get it" it's quite fun. Not recommended for anyone who is looking for melody or "hooks" or standard song structures?

I disagree about trout mask replica! It’s a great album if your mad and want to hear other mad bastards in music, and are currently bored of rock becoming too formulaic, whilst Yoko Ono singing (or wailing in her case) is just annoying! However I agree about The Shaggs! They are an enigma aren’t they? Is there such a genre as “music recorded under duress by your parents holding a shotgun to your head?” I think there should be after that album!!!!

Love it when you endorse reissues, which can be just as enjoyable as originals if done right,. Deep respect, sur. Love it too when you endorse the Betty Davis reissue (and that's my favorite of hers -- my PR company was called Big Freak based on that campaign). If you ever see a reissue put out by the label I work for Org Music, I'd be happy to send you anything that strikes your fancy (right now I'm hyping Westbound Sound Vol. 1 and Bad Brains' I Against I reissue). Thank you for all your wisdom, humor, and experience in the music world shared with us!

Way important what you mention about going deep instead of wide and letting go. Just days ago I traded a couple of albums I did not care for for one I really liked that I was missing since my childhood. I'm not only happy, but I'm also relieved I've emptied some room.

HI Robert. Really interesting subject to dicuss here and definately good tips for vinyl newcomers. The biggest mistake I used to make was getting into an artist and feeling the need to buy absolutely every record they released. What you end up with is dozens of records that all contain the same music, especially when it comes to collecting all the various pressings of one particular single. No matter how much I like an artist or band, do I really need the 7", the 10", the 12", the picture disc, the etched vinyl, the box set version etc etc... Its rather a waste of money in the long run and also a lot of shelf space needlessly taken up too. But I learned by my mistakes and these days I am far more streamlined and selective. Just to finish, you are quite right, have no fear getting rid of surplus unwanted stock. Make room for the records you actually really want. Cheers.

You hit the nail on the head with everything you said here. One difference is I genuinely like to listen to pop, dance, electronic, rock, rnb, funk, jazz, experimental, classical, and a bit of country, so what reflects my taste is wide, but I do have a fair share of favorite artist where I go deep as well.

Robert, great video. Thought it would be another one of these basic tips/intro videos (how to clean, how to store, handling vinyl etc) that are all over the place here. But you hit the nail on the head re buying only records YOU want, not the click-baity list suggestionss etc. And be prepared to dispose of records if you don’t enjoy them anymore. Let someone else have them and use any money generated to buy records you want and will play. Couldn’t agree more with everything on here, well said. Away to go back through my collection once more and bin the placemarkers...!!

While I was in the Air Force 1970-74, I could invested in good quality component equipment, including a Dual 1219 turntable. I admit I've been spoiled, but what a way to go. And the vinyl records sound just as good today as they did when new fifty years ago. If you take care of your toys, they'll last a long time.

Hi Robert, your video made me laugh & smile all the way through! Thank you! I‘ve started collecting records 52 years ago - and made some, not all of the mistakes you talked about. One of my problems were: I couldn’t let go („who knows“ 🥳). But during the decades I had to move several times - and each time I sorted the „cool to have“ records out because I had to. They were hundreds - but I rebought only 2 of them later. Missed the other ones not in one second. Now I have a decent collection of about 500 vinyls and 1000 CDs. That’s the eternal core of my music library. In most cases a huge collection is the result of decades of collecting - and look, here comes a new enemy: lifetime (meaning the rest of it). Now at the latest it‘s time to know who you are, and your music is one thing that defines you. Get rid of all the albums that have nothing to do with you - and enjoy your „friends“! - Thanks again for your wise AND funny video, Robert. Greetings from Berlin, Harry

I gotta say I have a few Waxtime records cause the alternate version is overpriced audiophile versions. I refuse to pay out the as% for a medium that can scratch easily. The sound is decent and the pressing is DMM.I get that it might be from a CD or MP3, unfortunately most represses are digital anyway. I do own a copy of Blue Train on Bkue Note and DOL, the sound seperation is slightly better on the Blue Note pressing but not by much.

I got a terrible Billie Holiday pressing on Waxtime where the songs were even in a different running order. I've heard a couple of others that didn't sound that great. I assume it depends on which release you get from them.

Yep, it totally makes sense. When I started again buying records in the US, I was spoiled lots of places had tons of records for like $0.15, 0.30 or $1 And you don't have much records at the beginning (my collection was still in storage in France at the time). So, you're kinda like heck, for that money, get as much as I can. I would mostly limit myself though to things I knew (oh I heard about that artist or something) or things that caught my eye (cool cover). Well, then you quickly end up with 200 records in a very short period of time, all of which HAVE to be deep cleaned before playing, not the just the Humminguru, we're talking serious clean. And that takes time (well, the drying is what takes the most time). And then, new records are coming out, so you get some etc etc... and in the end of those 200 records I got at the beginning, I think I still have a good half that I haven't listened to (nor cleaned yet actually) The other thing any collector should do is get your records on Discogs so that you know what you have. I got a few duplicates like that because I forgot I already got them. Plus, when you do it from the beginning it barely takes any time so you don't have that huge backlog to process afterwards which of course you hardly do because that takes too long. The other tip, is use streaming... see a record that picked your interest in the store but you don't know much about it, before you buy it, pull out your phone and give it a listen... lots of albums are available on YT. And sometimes you'll realize, nay not really my thing and put it back. Other times, yep I'm grabbing that (just like I did on RSD this year with Pale Shade of Grey compilation because I found a playlist for that album on YT created by none other than Robert Fithen himself. I thanked you for that, and I thank you again) I was very impressed the other, YT put in my feed a new video for a young girl called Honour (@honouraf), she's been collecting for about 10 years and she has 30 LPs... that's it but she listens to them all the time. I was really impressed. Now with over 600 records (I think), yep time to filter out some of those, I usually give them to friends, kids that are starting in vinyl other wise I'll try to sell them. PS: and yes I also have The Nightfly because I was curious about the hype, yes it is not up to the hype at all.. I think I wasn't able to listen to both sides at the same time... but some people love it and good for them.

The main thing to do different for most collectors, is to not have so many records, and the belief that the more records you have, the happier you'll become. You'll actually be less happy, as your listening time will be more divided up, and the very best records won't get played as often because of it. You only have one life, and having so many records, that to play each one 4 or 5 times each would require 3 lifetimes is stupid. Music shouldn't be that expensive. If you had a lot of money, and now no longer have a lot of money, because of buying records; you've done sonething real dumb. Those of us with near state of the art cd players, don't play our lps very often; and it's not because of the ticks and pops. You would have to have one helluva phono cartridge to equal cd sound near it's upper potential. Maybe a phono cartridge something in the $3,000+ range. It just seems to me that hoarding is really foolish. If the Earth spun at a lot slower speed and we had 60 hour days and had an expected life expectancy of 200 years old; then and only then would mass hoarding to this degree make any sense at all. The only smart thing about having so many records is you did have ti go through a lot of music to find artists and albums you really love. But you can do that nowadays by Free Streaming.
@sidesup8286
@sidesup8286 23 сағат бұрын
Even if you listen to 3 genres of music like I do; rock, jazz and classical, I'm pretty sure that you could be 100% as happy with 400 recordings as 4,000. I agree that buying garbage copies until you can find a better one is foolish. Decades ago though, it might have been wise to hear the whole record to see if you really like it enough, to one day pay a collectible price, if it was rare and you couldn't hear it at anyone's house. The only other good reason is that even if a record's condition is not very good, if it's an earlier pressing, it still might sound cleaner than a mint copy of later pressings, when lp manufacturers were cheapening things (and pressing quality) to increase profit margins.

Just went to the Outlaw Music Festival. I was so excited because Robert Plant, Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan would be there. Sounds awesome! But then Willie Nelson got sick and couldn’t attend. Completely fine, I understand health happens, but Willie’s absence was truly felt. Robert Plant was performing with Alison Krauss. Complete bore to me. I was excited to see Robert Plant in person, and I’m still grateful I saw him, but I’m just not a fan of his stuff with Alison Krauss. He played a couple of Led Zeppelin songs that brought it up a bit but the rest was pretty underwhelming. He sang great as usual but the songs themselves just weren’t all that interesting. Bob Dylan was on FIRE. Loved his set. The setlist was awesome, “Ballad of a Thin Man” was MIND BLOWING, and his band was killing it the whole show. Bob Dylan was definitely the highlight. In place of Willie, his song performed. His son Lukas sounds just like him, which was great, but I couldn’t help but feel it was like watching a tribute band. Again, not their fault, but it did kind of bring down the show. Not to mention it was an outdoor concert, people were getting up, walking in front of me blocking my view, just rudely standing up right in front of me, talking throughout the whole show. I had to sit on the grass the whole show because chairs were $15 and they all sold out (our venue didn’t allow outside chairs.) it didn’t help that it was 90° outside. The opener, Celisse, was SO boring. She played for a full 50 minutes and it went on for far too long for an opener. It sounded like she just played the same kind of song over and over. All in all, Bob Dylan was pretty much the only part I was truly invested in. I had seen him back in March, so I knew what to expect, but then he completely subverted my expectations. Seeing Robert Plant was cool but his set was just kind of boring. Glad I went but it was still probably the worst concert experience I’ve ever had.
