FYI: JR pass rravel hack - When I arrived at Haneda airport in April 2023, there must have been 300 to 400 people waiting in line to exchange their vouchers for a JR pass. It was probably going to be 2-3 hour wait at minimum! Instead, I took my chances and headed to Shinagawa station where you can also exchange your vouchers. When I got to Shinagawa, there were all of FOUR people in line! The fare from Haneda to Shinagawa is a paltry $2.40 so if you're heading into Tokyo anyway, it is a great option to avoid the crowds and long waits at Haneda.

Tip: Look into the regional rail passes. They still have a price that makes sense and actually saves money. I used the JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass this year and it was totally worth it, much better for my itinerary than the "general" JR Pass. Its cost will increase in October from 15k yen to 17k yen, that is 13,33% compared to 70% or so for the Japan Rail Pass. Completely ridiculous. Makes me think they want tourists to now go for regional passes and explore more of the regions instead of travelling only between the "usual" Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara cookie cutter places. By the way, out of my 7 trips to Japan so far, this was the best ! Got to see Himeji castle during Sakura season. Easily one of the most beautiful places I have been to in my life.

Yep, I do imagine it's to discourage tourists from travelling to only the popular places. I'm reminded of a book series first published in Singapore where each book took place in a different part of Singapore, then when the author and illustrator presumably ran out of locations within the country to have their stories take place in, they took to other countries, but only the popular cities in each country, like London in the UK, New York City in the US, Tokyo in Japan, and Taipei in Taiwan, with the exception of Malaysia where the respective book had its story take place in Penang instead of Kuala Lumpur.

Well tbf, the general JR Pass was just too broad. We plan to travel through Tohoku and would have chosen the general JR Pass instead of the Tohoku+Hakodate pass since it's just slightly more expensive but valid longer and usable for Tokyo too. The JR Pass was just too powerful for that price

Unfortunately, most of those also become more expensive. Some just a few percent, but others up to 50%. This last bit is for the JR East passes, which had already become much less attractive since they could be used on non-consecutive days within a longer period, but this was dropped a few years ago while the price remained basically the same.

@@WizardOfOss I think it depend on where you are going. Like you said , JR East rise the price way to high for my money. This is why i choose to visit kyushu instead of hokkaido , even if i will visit it another time probably. Basicaly , i went from local pass to local pass until i finish my travel. The JR Sanyo Sanin Area Pass are one of the best pass in my opinion , it cover a huge part of western japan for 7 days for 23 000 Y , only 3 000 more than before . If you stay in Kansai, Kansai pass or the Kansai Wide pass are goods option too . Also one of the best advantage to use local pass is to use local train. Japan have a great variety of nice special train , like the one with huge bay window when the seat in in front of the windows or the one in kyushu with jazz on it .

I did the math for my upcoming trip to Japan. - The 7 day pass is a meme. At the amount of travel you need to do to make it pay back picking low cost flights or overnight buses gives a noticeable increase in time to actually go visit places and do things, which is the point of a trip. - The 14 day pass is a hard sell because combining regional passes will be cheaper. Even in central Japan with large swaths of land without regional passes, it's not much better. I guess that means regional passes for me. - The 21 day pass is arguably barely affected since the only people who'd consider it in the first place are going on a country wide tour anyway, and it's still cheaper than normal tickets for that.

I was going to 10 cities from Tokyo to all the way to kagoshima and was going to buy the 21 day pass green which was 622ish. I calculated it and it would cost about 500ish standard and 122 would be the extra for the green which was fine with me but when they raised it to 1k, now its not a deal anymore.

Not great news for those traveling and looking to move around on Shinkansen. Used the 7-DAY Green Rail Pass back in December 2022 and paid $44,800 JPY (tax included). Used for a total of 7 Shinkansen rides (Tokyo -> Kyoto, Kyoto -> Shin-Osaka, Shin-Osaka -> Himeji, Himeji -> Kyoto, Shin-Osaka Hiroshima, Shin-Osaka -> Tokyo). That''s one Shinkansen ride per day on average, which I consider fairly acceptable. The best was that the Pass was a whopping 43% discount over purchasing the same individual Green Car Shinkansen rides. Now with the price spikes, you wouldn't be able to afford the 7-DAY Regular Rail Pass for the same price of the Green before the increase. There would be very few itineraries that can pay-off the price spike. Guess it's now the turn for the regional passes or fly domestic for longer stretches.

Question, a friend and I are going to Japan on October 10th. Are we able to purchase the JR Pass before October with the current price and just activate it when we get there?
@japanguide
@japanguide 10 ай бұрын
"If you purchase the pass through the official website, you have to select a starting date for your pass within one month of purchasing it. So, if you were to purchase it on September 30, you could still use the old rail pass from late October 2023 into November at the latest. If you purchase the pass through a travel agent, you get a voucher, which must be exchanged to the actual pass in Japan within three months of purchase. When exchanging the voucher, you can select a starting date within a 1-month period. In other words, if you purchase the pass on September 30, you could theoretically exchange the voucher in late December, select a starting date for late January and then use the pass into February 2024. However, by the 2024 cherry blossom season, the Japan Rail Pass - as we know it now - will be history." That means you could buy the JR Pass with the current price before your trip and activate it in October. Hope this helped! Have a nice trip!

The price increase sadly renders the JR pass almost useless. I usually go for the longer 21 day versions (all others already seem absolutely impossible to break even, unless your main reason to come to Japan is riding the trains). Even with a Touhoku-Hokkaido round trip to Tokyo, it's nearly impossible to break even or come close - and the margin is just too much to justify it with convenience imho. Getting tickets is just as easy as getting seat reservations, so yeah idk.

@japanguide 8 ай бұрын
Only the base fare would be covered, and you would have to pay the entire Grand Class supplement fee, which is usually rather large.

I wonder if this is a way for JR to secretly discontinue the JR pass... Basically pull the strategy from Disney: Raise the price of the annual pass to ridiculous levels in order to get more people to buy single ride tickets, which they profit more from.

There are also local subways included but you need to ensure that it is operated by JR... So in Tokyo, you can use it in Yamanote, chuo, and keihin-tohoku Line. The other metros are run by other companies.

I know the answer to my question, but my paranoia is forcing me to ask it anyways.. lol. My issue date on my jr pass that just arrived is August 2nd, 2023. So I should be totally fine to activate this on October 20th right?

That's too easy, in 2019 we arrived at Tokyo spend a week there and then we stay at Osaka for another week because it's more affordable, and we use shinkansen daily to Kyoto. We also use the pass for nelita express. Our pass definitely worth it.

Glad I have used JR pass before price rise to travel from Shin-Hakodate to Kagoshima in my past trips. With the new price I would have to spend 5days travel on a 7day pass to make it worth it.

I’m seeing a lot of comments saying that the price change is a signal that Japan is becoming less friendly to foreign tourists and I think that’s a blatantly incorrect assessment. The JR price was heavily subsidized when it was initially released and was intended to address a gap in their ticketing processes at the time. Now, it is much easier for foreigners to purchase tickets at station offices and machines, so there was no longer a need for a heavily subsidized JR pass. Additionally, the volume of foreign tourists meant the JR pass was becoming a source of financial loss. With this change, travelers will need to be more conscious about their plans to determine if a JR pass is financially worth it for their trip. I will say that you typically do not want to plan your trip to have too many days of travel, so I think most leisure travelers will be skipping the JR pass.

Disappointing to hear. I visited Japan in April this year and the JR Pass was such a fantastic pass to have... I was thinking of coming back next year because the Grand Prix is now in April and to visit places we didn't have time to visit this year. But I'm not gonna pay 50-70% extra. Plane tickets have increased substantially too... It seems like traveling the world will be only for the elite now.

Regional passes and low-cost airlines FTW now. Not tough to do without this pass really. With a shrinking population, JR wants and needs to make money and no longer wants to subsidise all of you filling up the Hikari between Tokyo and Osaka.

Yes, we hope that this video will remain relevant for a considerable time beyond October 2023. If you look closely, you can even see the Hokuriku Shinkansen already being extended to Tsuruga on the maps, which won't happen until March 2024.

In Japan, JR fares are conditionally discounted for the physically handicapped and intellectual disabilities. However, there is no fare discount for the mentally disabled who suffer from schizophrenia, manic-depression, epilepsy, or other mental illnesses. I'm a Japanese living in Japan and suffering from schizophrenia, and I pay full fare on the JR for long distance travel on the Shinkansen. You foreigners are lucky to be able to purchase cheap JAPAN RAIL PASS. You people should thank JR company for discriminating against the mentally disabled. The loss of the discount on the JAPAN RAIL PASS for you foreigners is covered by the fares we Japanese pay on crowded trains. Please travel with this in mind. Have a great trip!

The jr pass is not worth it at all. With increases up to 60% doesnt justify it. Only people who dont research and just "buy" it outright will be the only suckers buying it. Theres literally no value in them at all with the price hike.
