The problem with Powered Up! is that LEGO refuses to pick a system and stick with it. Instead of adding additional functionality to the existing system, LEGO seems to keep making new systems.

@@shawns_Lego I think it could be quite versatile if it's just like the current lineup of motors attatched to a hub. It looked like there were 2 drive motors, so if each side is independent then tracked vehicles are a possibility with the addition of a motorised function using the third motor.

Looks like it holds a single 18650 cell, the most common and therefore most cost effective lithium cell. That's also why it has half the voltage - higher voltage lithium batteries have multiple cells in series, each providing 3.7~4.2V. So as for why this form, I'd assume it's for cost reasons.

And good news is, unless there is some kind of "memory lock", it should be possible to replace cell in case of deterioration (e.g. if left uncharged for too long). As for voltage, boost converters are cheep as dirt, so it still could be compatible with existing HW.

The optimistic in me thinks that this might actually be the fastest RC that lego is trying to make. I think that’s the reason for the rechargeable batteries (for less weight) and combining the drive motor, servo and hub all into one unit could also reduce much weight. I'm very happy with using low self-discharge NiMH batteries for my LEGO hubs - that way if I don't touch it for a year, the batteries are still OK. Imagine not touching a Li-Ion battery for a year - that one will be completely dead and impossible to charge. If only they hadn't introduced screwed covers… However if the battery module itself is easily disassemblable, then the cell inside looks like an ordinary 18650, so at least replacing it with a good one might work…

On the one hand, having motors fixed to the hub is a building challenge in its own way, and might be fun. On the other hand, the lack of modularity in the downgraded voltage are concerning for advanced technic builders........it's bad enough we have to endure the studless technic system

Looks like they will be using rechargeable 18650 Lithium batteries like a lot of rc gear are going too, I wouldn’t be disappointed they pack quite a punch are light weight, compact and cheap to replace. As for the voltage it will most likely be boosted the key thing to look for is 2500mah/3000mah ideally 2 + batteries which should last long enough for some fun 😊

IDK why Lego don't make similar products like Circuit Cubes, maybe little bigger, but still smaller like actual Lego hubs. I don't like actual Lego "RC" products, because oversize, need batteries... My still favorite Lego "RC" product is App-Controlled Batmobile(76112), because relative smaller design for hub(with BT control), like actual technic hubs. I will want upgrade Hub 88009 with more ports and rechargeable battery, this will perfect for me by Lego.

I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure the performance will be nothing particularly impressive. A 1S lithium ion setup doesn't really provide a lot of power for motors. However I am glad to see another one of these compact RC car units; I've always loved past ones. Especially now that the steering output is just an axle instead of a pre-made steering system, so we can create our own steering mechanisms and customize the wheelbase.

Weird choice from Lego? Making those hubs even bigger than they are already? If I worked there I would keep the receiver and maybe even the motor speed controller seperate from the batteries. This will give the builders way more options to place them in their models. Just like the normal RC world has. Seems like Lego does not like wires. Maybe that's the reason there are no wire extenders either.

I think for a company that is trying to appear enviromentaly friendly. The fact that lego still uses battery boxes for things like trains is kind of disgraceful. How many aa and aaa batteries go into the garbage each year? The fact that I can buy a rechargable battery box from temu for my trains, that gets charged by a usb cable without removing the box from the locomotive. Means its totally possible. So why hasnt it happened at lego?

Rechargeable AA and AAA batteries are widespread and available practically anywhere, and they can be used in a wide range of household products. Creating a proprietary battery for a LEGO hub means it can only be used for that specific purpose, nothing else, and it will be more expensive for sure.

Interesting find. Thanks for all the details! But unfortunately it's a big step backwards. Instead of making the motorization smaller and more versatile they design an ugly big brick that only fits RC cars like the Porsche. That rechargeable battery pack is just an 18650 Li-Ion cell with a very low capacity. I bought a high quality Panasonic cell + PCB with 3400 mAh for less than 15€. They could have at least included this higher capacity cell, if not the newer 21700 cells which can go up to 5000 mAh and are cheaper to make. Why decrease voltage to only 3.6V when all motors in the last two decades ran on 9V/7.2V? Would have been better to be able to let the customer add the cell of their choice, but at least they use a high quality Panasonic UR18650A cell. Meanwhile the competitors all use the practical BuWizz form factor for their PF sets together with analog remotes. I really don't understand this companies strategy for remote controlled sets.

I feel like Lego is dicking us around with all the electronics. They have had multiple platforms which are disturbingly incompatible, under powered, waste battery based, screw driver needed, non or not easily programmable, weird form factor and unreliable pieces of trash. It’s not hard to get this right when you have an r&d as big as they have and with third party suppliers you can cheat off (or buy out right for a few bucks). Finally just ask the community what they need instead of trying to deliberately create bad electronics; fairly powerful, 3 fase, speed controlled by Bluetooth, programmable and with a high amp rechargeable battery or transformer. Oh, and a train motor that can actually pull a train with iron rails that only gets power from rails but is controlled wirelessly.
