Checking out the brand new Makita XGT 21 Inch 40V Max commercial battery-powered lawn mower and it's a beast. Is it the best battery-powered mower on the market at the moment? We think so....

I just bought the smaller 480mm Makita XGT last Friday and mowed 3 lawns since. I did heaps of research and have zero regrets. The extra 400 rpm over the 538mm version makes a substantial difference. Only needing 1 battery that can auto switch to a second battery is a huge win over the Milwaukee. Easy to wash just don't hose the self-propel area directly and leave battery lid closed. The torque in dense tall wet grass really surprised me. It ramps up in auto instantly and never came close to stalling. The runtime was excellent on 2x8ah and 2x5ah. It blew my mind how much grass flies through to the catcher from a tiny shoot. It compacts a lot in. Big thank you 'Lovelawns Pty Lyd' for testing XGT Makita against the Ego. It sealed the deal for me.

Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Stoked you are loving the Makita mower. I haven’t tried the smaller version yet but a few people have recommended it recently. Exciting times!

Another detail of this mower that I like is the fact that they have positioned the plastic wingnut/knob thingies that secure the two sections of the handle on the inside of the handle. It seems minor, but for anyone who has attempted to mow close to a chain-link fence, it can be a deal-breaker. It's amazing that most manufacturers miss this point.

I've been using the 480 version (bought for the extra grunt over the 21") everyday for about 2 months and I love it! I've been using a Honda 21" for about 10 years and I finally unpacked it from my trailer the other day... the Makita is that good! Not sure how it will go with wet spring growth, but it's great atm! One thing to watch for is the 480mm swing-back blades aren't available yet. Makita Rep said about 2-3 months... pretty poor from Makita I think! (21" blade are available)

Im disappointed they did not make this mower more powerful by using two xgt batteries in series, Instead It seem the power is on par if not just a little better than the 36v lxt mower. I hope they release another version of this mower that is an 80v tool using two xgt batteries.

Always something to improve upon I guess but I found it had plenty of power for a battery mower.

great review mate,To have the swing back blades demonstrates how serious these are getting towards commercial standing...I new this would happen with battery you invest shit loads of dollars in one particular brand ( husky for me ) with batteries etc then you find something better...how good if batteries were universal lol yeh tell him his dreaming lol...I too have add a crack at one of these and concur totally with your comments . I guess one could say buy the mower with plenty of batteries or the big one and treat it as a good investment in a mower perhaps...thank you for your channel ,once again !!

Hey mate, thanks for watching and commenting. Yep I've also invested shed loads into Husqvarna. If they could bring out a mower similar to this or even better (surely one day) I'd be a very happy chap but at the moment this Makita gear is really good, particularly this mower! I post quite a few little videos talking about gear on Instagram as well if you are on there? A universal standard battery would be amazing!

Just about. Ideally I would like it to go a bit lower but no battery mower goes lower than 20mm at the moment and this Makita is the only one I know of that does. All the other ones are 25mm or higher!

I don't understand what to do with the batteries between mows. For me, that's about 2 to 3 weeks in the summer. After mowing, they need to be charged, but when should I do that? I don't think I'm supposed to leave them in the charger for weeks on end. But should I leave them in the mower? Or wait till the day before I mow and charge them then? Any advice?
@lovelawns
@lovelawns 10 ай бұрын
Just pop them in the charger, then sit on the side, ready for your next mow. 👍🏻

But when? Wait until I’m ready to mow again and then charge it? Or charge it when I finished the first time?
@agusjarlim
@agusjarlim 8 ай бұрын
@@lizbiglerThe battery suffers when it is below 20% or above 70%. Obviously in real life it is difficult to maintain these values, however it is easy not to discharge it below 20, this should always be tried, since also when the battery is low it loses power and therefore wastes your time. When we notice that the machine loses power, check that it only has one light on the indicator and remove the battery. If the battery is above 25% (2 indicator lights) and it won't be long until the next time you use it, you can leave it stored like this. I personally have a simple timer and by pressing a couple of buttons I program the charger for 30-40 minutes of charging, leaving them in a state close to 60-70%, ideal for storage. When I am going to use them, if the work is not going to be demanding I use them like this, if it is going to be demanding I charge them to 100% before using them. There is a study that assessed how many complete charge cycles a battery lasts until it drops to 80% health if it is used at different levels of charge. Some of the values it showed are that it gave 500 cycles if it was discharged to 0% and charged to 100%, 1000 cycles if 20-100 were done (this is easy and comfortable to do) and, at best, 6000 cycles charging 20-70.

Hows it go mulching compared to the ego? I've always thought swing back blades are rubbish at mulching?
@lovelawns

Both are pretty average at mulching to be honest. I’d say they are pretty much on par with the Makita being a touch better due to higher torque. Cheers

Hi there mate, purchased an the Ego select cut 52cm sp about 2 weeks ago and I am thinking of using the 30 day money back guarantee to take it back and swap it out for the Makita 40v would you recommend I do that, just finding it a little bit flimsy type feeling and not picking up the grass properly, cheers
