NEW Metrolink Arrow Train Redlands California

Southern California has a brand new commuter train! On October 24 2022, the ARROW began running in between San Bernardino and Redlands. Upgrades to the route ARROW uses took about 3 years to complete, starting in 2019. Trains run daily with trips departing about once an hour in each direction on weekends with a few additional runs on weekdays during the busy rush hours of commuter traffic. While ARROW is owned by San Bernardino County, it is operated as an extension of the Metrolink system. ARROW uses a brand new fleet of self propelled diesel rail cars, known as Diesel Multiple Units. These particular cars were built by a Swiss company called STADLER at their factory in Salt Lake City, Utah. In this video, we will explore this new commuter line, stopping at several locations along the route to see the DMU rail cars pass by.

There actually weren't as many as I was expecting when I rode it. It's only a handful of miles, after all. I think the horn show in the video may have partially been for the cameras. ;)

That's Stadler Flirt, we have a lot of them in Poland and they are very well designed and built. They come in both commute and long distance configurations. I love the first class on the long distance version, I just sit at a table with some work to be done and enjoy the ride. Flirts are very reliable, comfy, with smooth rolling bogies and easy acess for those with special needs. Greetings from Europe!

Really great how Metrolink is expanding service, especially considering the relatively low population of Redlands compared to something like Riverside.

Yeah, I railfan at the DFW Area and the only difference between these commuter lines is the range, speed, and model. Arrow is a 102 Stadler flirt, TEXRail is 103. The bell on TEXRail is now an E-bell and twice as fast as it used to be, TEXRail operates there Stadler Flirts at 70MPH, I think arrow is below that MPH.

Nice video Mike! When I first saw posts of the Arrow route for SoCal, it didn’t seem really Metrolink like to me from the colors and the amount of time for the journey in both directions, but it does seem like an interesting thing for SoCal here. I do know that Amtrak plans to get them for the San Joaquins although I’m not really gonna be impressed. I agree with what they said on the emissions but it doesn’t seem like enough to hold more passengers and it may not add up to the 28-axle count because of the crossing in Fresno having problems detecting the San Joaquins. AmCal does seem like it needs new doubledecker coaches though, maybe Alstom could make something even for some other state sponsored services. MU’s from other manufacturers like Siemens and Alstom might be nice too.

The Arrow was suppose to be run by Omnitrans (local bus transit company) hence the arrow's livelry. County Transit ended up selecting Metrolink as the operator before service started. On a side note, the Arrow was supposed to be light rail, but SB county had to go the DMU route as it was more financially feasible.

Nice footage, not a fan of the horn though. I feel this line should've been a simple extension of the San Bernadino Line instead of a whole separate route that requires a transfer. Although I hear Metrolink is looking into more Redlands to LAUPT direct service soon.

Great video and I haven't have the time to go out to San Bernardino go and check out the new train sets on my work schedules during the weekday and I live in Los Angeles it kind of makes it impossible to too bad they don't run too are new arrow train doesn't run on the weekends maybe one day Metrolink will do that

It's nice to see there are many other states using Stadler flirts, I railfan an TEXAS DFW. The only thing that bothers me a bit of most Stadler flirts it's almost the same bell and horn. TEXRail used to have the same type of bell but now it's a electric bell but faster than it used to be.

There’s no such thing as Diesel Light Rail, the Sprinter isn’t even Light Rail even though they call it one, it’s not true light rail

What's odd about the operation is that Metrolink contracts with Amtrak, the Locomotive Engineers and Conductors on Metrolink trains are Amtrak employees. Arrow is not, it is operated by TASI, which is the transport part of Herzog. Word on the street was Metrolink and Arrow would combine and the seniority would be put together. But this is because Herzog fawns over Metrolink and hopes to take that contract from Amtrak on the next bid. Otherwise, I'm not sure how the crew integration would work. Not that it really has anything to do with this video, just something to share. I don't work there but I believe Arrow is a pretty sweet gig, at least so far. For the work, it's not bad. Metrolink though, pays like a freaking slot machine. Anyway, I digress.
