Did a 14 day camp trip in NM with my daughter 17 years ago and the catwalk was one of her favorite places.

Loved the catwalk. Will make it a point to do it on my next adventure thru New Mexico. By the way, this year I went thru Highway 60 down in Socorro, Nex Mex all the way to Show Low, down the mountains to Phoenix Ariz and the drive was wonderful. Right after Socorro on the 60 there's Box Canyon, gorgeous place. I stopped to eat pie at a small restaurant in Pie Town called Pie-o-neer. I highly recommend that drive.

This one is in my home territory, I live in Glenwood, home of the Catwalk. You mentioned the Gila Cliff Dwellings, and you definitely need to come back and see them. They are awesome.

We went there yesterday, live in Safford, been going to the Catwalk for 29 years and although it has changed, we just love it every time! The weather was perfect yesterday, and the water was super refreshing! Great video.

One of the most fun things I’ve ever done was drive out west like your doing, didn’t really plan, but found random Pueblo ruins, Grand Canyon, the giant crater, antelope canyon, and arches. But just the changing landscape alone is a great adventure.

I visited New Mexico for work and pleasure while living in Arizona and it was full of surprises. I especially enjoyed the small remote areas, orchards, snow capped mountains, and other natural beauty. New Mexico also has it's own unique style of cuisine, with chilies and fried dough with honey....

What a neat place! Thank you for finding, and taking us along places like this. I love all of your videos, but most especially, the quiet, slow scenes which consist of nothing but the landscape and sounds of water, wind, or stillness. It makes me feel as if I'm there, and it is both calming, and filling at the same time.

We stumbled across the Catwalk on May 5, 2017 when we were camped in Silver City, NM. It was one of the highlights of our 52 day trip to the West. We were mostly taking in National Parks and Monuments however because we have dogs this was an amazing place to be able to take them and also just to enjoy the beauty of the Catwalk. There was only like one other car there when we were there, very peaceful. I am glad that you enjoyed it also.

The whol gila wilderness is a fantastic area to wander . Particularly in the spring , summer is hot and dry ( fire hazards ) . Fall is hunting season , winter can be great if prepared .

Great part of the Southwest! When you do have a chance to go to city of rocks, I think you’ll love it. So tranquil and endless places to explore. When I visited one hot springs on the way to the cliff dwellings, there was a RV tribe that had decided to completely undress and enjoy the water. At face value this sounds sexy and intriguing HOWEVER the over 65 nature of the tribe made it more ‘educational’. It was fine, after a few months of therapy I started talking again. Btw love the mid week video, such a nice treat!

Larry here. I was the one from Idaho who commented on our 'We Found Paradise' video, and I wanted to comment on your Catwalk visit since I am now living about 4 miles away from the Catwalk in Glenwood. The first thing I noted is that you commented on how old the present version of the Catwalk is, and you were basically right, it is now around 4-5 years old. The reason it is so new is that in 2013 this area received about 7 inches of rain in a few hours creating a very large flood. So large that it took the old metal catwalk and ripped it from the walls, twisting it into little pretzel pieces. That is the power of water. They danced around about 2 years or so agonizing about what they were going to do, but had to eventually bite the bullet and rebuild it as it is a very large draw and significant part of the tourist revenue that comes to Catron County. In February this year [2020] I hiked up the Catwalk all the way up past the official end and up to the point where the Gold Dust Trail comes into the Whitewater drainage. They now have blocked off the canyon after the end of the Catwalk, and if you want to hike the Whitewater drainage you must use the Gold Dust Trail to access it. It is a shame that you whizzed through here so quickly as there is so much to see in this area. Mineral Creek for instance is a beautiful slot canyon hike. I am particularly fond of the Gold Dust Trail as well, which ironically gets very short shrift in most of the area's guidebooks.

After watching this video, it was time to take a 3 day weekend and drive to southeastern NM and explore with the grandbabes. They enjoyed the catwalk and loved playing in the water. Then went to Silver City and the next day went to the Gila Cliff Dwellings, we were disappointed the caves were closed off due to covid. Before this video I never heard of the Catwalks and I live in NM! LOL Thanks Tristan for bringing this to my attention. 🤠👍🏽

I had a plate and screws put in to repair broken wrist and my cast was removed a couple days ago..I do my rehabilitation exercises while watching your videos as they help to take me away from the pain while doing them. 😬 Keep the videos coming...as they help keep me focused on ideas for future road trips I hope you are recovering well from your hip surgery. 😃

Oh my goodness! This is four years old so I don’t know if you will even read this comment. I just spent a lot of time in southwestern New Mexico, and became infatuated with the Florida Mountains as I sat and looked at them from my campsite at Rockhound State Park. I thought you might like to check them out. They are supposed to be very rugged and there is a dragon back Ridge and a dragon head Ridge. And I kept seeing the dragons as I drove around them, but then I would see another dragon. Oh well. It’s just a thought! Oh and there’s a wilderness area within the Florida mountains. And they have had to fight to protect that wilderness area from mining claims trying to get hold of it. Just more for you to think about.

I like that you patronize the local establishments. Not always the big chain stores. J

Way late but I just saw this video. The Catwalk had a relatively recent major flood that ripped the structure off the walls. It was closed for several years, maybe three. I was surprised to see it open again since I did not know that they were restoring it. However it looks like they only did a partial restoration since it went back a lot farther if my memory serves. Still some is better than none. I want to get back there when the NM lockdown is relaxed.

Whitewater Catwalk was my exit point when I traversed the Gila Wilderness west from Gila Cliff Dwellings. I took my time and it took me 7 days. It was one of my best longer hikes.

I've never been to New Mexico, but it's a place I've always wanted to explore. Looks beautiful.

I really wish you had seen it before the flood! One of my favorite childhood memories was standing under the big ice cold waterfall after the long hike! (no longer accessible after the flood:( ) Also there was a pretty scary swinging bridge at some point. New Mexico is such a gem. You've gotta make it to the cliff dwellings it's beautiful!

Flowing water in the desert is always more impressive..

That washed-out staircase above the swimming hole used to come down from the actual trail. The trail continued along the upper ledge of the canyon much further in the past. We swam there every summer for 15 years. There used to be a super cool suspension bridge at the upper end that went across to a beautiful alcove. I wonder if it's still up there?

Spend weeks in the area ,exploring the area.

Me and my son rode motorcycles there in 85. At that time you could walk on the pipes. There was a sign in there explaining the term cat walk. It explainedThe people taking care of the maintenance on the pipes. It made them look like cats walking on the metal pipes.Great memories.

Gila National Monument during a full moon is fantastic! The park rangers lead you on a tour to the cliff dwellings. A must see and do next time you're here. There are wonderful sulfur free hot springs on the way to the cliff dwellings.

The area is blocked off now quite a ways before where you went up the abandoned stairs. Like I noted, the flood of 2013 changed a lot in this canyon. I remember hearing a figure of 9 inches of rain in a period of hours in the Whitewater drainage.

There once was a campground at the mouth of the catwalk canyon, but in the 1970's a spring flood trapped some campers so they closed down the campground. During my middle school and high school years (1970's) we camped and fished at catwalk almost every Easter break. The trail at that time was well maintained with good bridges up to the old Electric Power station. The power station provided electric power to the Mogollon mining town

If you want others to sort of follow your route, it would / could be useful to mention the roads you've traveled on. One looked possibly like Route 78 from AZ to Mule Creek NM, the high point of which sports a great campground (Blackjack), another possibly 180? What about the bakery? Where is it? Or the campsite? You've 'advertised' Walmart a couple of times. Those are usually easy to find. But local snack places, routes and camp spots can easily be passed by. Another hint: If you want to see more of the upper White Water canyon area, especially now that the new catwalk ends so soon, head first up the road to Mogollon (Route 159) for about six miles, take a right onto a one lane access road to the trailhead (enough space for several vehicles), then head down the trail to the stream, where it joins the lower trail and keep going upstream. You may find an old 20s or 30s car wreck along the way, plus some mining junk.

My wife and i walked the Catwalk about 20 years ago. It was a random collietion of old grating walkway about two feet wide barely nailed to the cliff. IIRC the water was too high to go beyond the metal part. Then we drove to Mongollon and back.

first hiked the catwalk over 30 years ago. It has seen a lot of change, from being rebuilt only to be gutted by floods to new construction to its current form.

The Catwalk was re-done, probably 2016 or so. The massive flood of 2013 took the old Catwalk and twisted it up like a pretzel, at least that part that wasn't torn down.

Google maps aerial/satellite pics of the parking area shows a lot of construction equipment, crane, etc. so the new catwalk is rather recent. 360 views of points along the trail dated 2016 show construction crews, beams fitted into the rock walls, JLG manlifts and other equipment working to install the catwalk. So it was less than 2 years old when you were there.

WE hiked somewhere in Northern New Mexico to cliff dwellings.You went on your own no tour.You went miles on a dead end road that ended on a river.Then you hike up a little creek to the dwellings.Camping on the river was free.Nobody there,we stayed 2 nights there.It was so awesome. This was back in the late 70's.I think it was Verda River.

Ran accross this video after watching a couple of your others which were excellent. I stumbled upon the Catwalk in 1985-- my!! how much it has changed since then! It was much more crude as to the cantilevered walkway-- some significant money and effort has been applied since then! Still a spectacular and Hidden Gem in Western New Mexico though!

Interesting seeing you come up Hwy78. We do that one very often. BTW: Water coming out of the Catwalk isn't an 'always' event.

Hey Tristan, I have a recommendation for amazing camping in east central Az. West and south of Greer, a small village at 8300' on the NE flank of Mt Baldy, the 3rd highest peak in AZ at 11,400'. Above Greer there is a huge alpine prairie with beautiful views and lots of elk and even wolves. The wolf reintroduction project happened there years ago, I saw 2 of them while I lived there. Great place to photograph wildlife and endless beautiful campsites. Plus Molly Butler Lodge in Greer to have some some prime rib, etc. (Beer?) Elevation is all above 9000' on the prairie, so it's a summer spot. I'm a musician, I used to play at the lodge on weekends a few years back. Love the videos.

As new rock-hounds living in NM, my wife and I were disappointed that you did not look for any minerals. But, we've been to the catwalk several times and it is a gem. We'll have to go back and look for mineral gems ourselves I guess.

I live a little over an hour away, up hwy 180 in Arizona, get by there every couple of months. From Glenwood up to Quemado is really beautiful. On another trip in the area you might consider El Morro National Monument, just a few miles east of Ramah on hwy 53, Zuni to Grants.

Great adventure. No hype and to the point. It’s great seeing how you pick your campsites. That must be hard at times. Very hard finding free ones in the NE. We were in the Adirondacks this past week and it’s almost impossible to find primitive camps. More Scones please!

Spend time there , there is different stuff different just around each corner

The structures looked new because they ARE new. The Catwalk reopened in mid-2016 after a couple of years of reconstruction following its destruction during a major flood event a few years prior. One of my sisters lives in Glenwood, so I heard all about it at the time. Here's an excerpt from an article about the reopening: It’s taken nearly two years of work to reopen and reconstruct the famed walkways suspended in a canyon after flooding took out many of the structure’s supports, and judging by the crowd’s enthusiasm, the absence did make hearts grow fonder. Adam Mendonca, the Gila National Forest supervisor, said that Saturday’s reopening marked a significant event in the area’s history. “We’re really, really happy that we can be standing here on this day and can welcome everyone,” Mendonca said. “We have more work to do, but we’re going to celebrate what we’ve finished thus far.” The project so far has cost around $4.4 million for trail reconstruction and the rebuilding of the catwalk structures themselves, and Hayden Forward, leader of the Catwalk Citizens Group, said there’s nearly $700,000 worth of work remaining to complete the trail restoration. Only the trail up to and including the catwalk structure was open Saturday, and the rest of the trail will take some time to complete, he said. “We have three-quarters of a mile of obliterated trail that actually used to run across the side wall of the canyon so you could view all the riparian areas, but not actually be in the riparian areas,” Forward told the Daily Press. The actual hanging catwalk, he said, is less than 400 feet long, although he could not estimate its exact length. He said the rest of the trail, which takes people up the canyon, has blown out side walls, and bridge repair needs to be done before the trail can be fully open. “The Catwalk is a national historic trail within a national park, and it’s been around since 1933 when the CCC came in and actually built the trail going up to the wilderness,” he said. “Generations and generations of families have a tradition of coming up here.” Forward explained that the trail is one of the most noteworthy sites in this quadrant of the state, and its closure left a real gap. “The advertising for the Catwalk is outrageous,” he said. “You take a look at any GPS and the Catwalk pops up, Google Maps, the Catwalk is all over Google Earth, Trip Advisor - you can’t be in this part of New Mexico in today’s world and not know about the Catwalk.” I'm a longtime Arizona resident (Tucson since 1972) and I love the vicarious exploring I get to do by following your channel, Tristan, so thanks for sharing!

I had to jump forward to see a NM adventure. I've really wanted to go the Gila since I heard about it, and am planning to in October. I always love seeing water in the desert . Seems more beautiful and amazing to me somehow. I have heard of the catwalk before but never seen more than a few pictures of it. Not sure how much I could do beyond the actual catwalk but looks worth it anyway. The ruins are supposed to be amazing because you can get right up into them. Love this state-- not a native. When were you in that area? Curious re: the weather. Thanks. Always love your videos.

I used to live in silver city new mexico went all over the gila national forest on my time off work been to cliff dwellings north of the town of timbres valley nice lakes north of there been to the cat walk up by Glenwood nm on 180there are alot of things to see with in a 100 mile area and still go down there to hanover nm have family in hanover the Santa Rita mine is located there every where you look there is history been going to new mexico for 43 years good food in South hurry at the patio on main Street go south of bayern nm you'll see
