Belts are the way to go. They can slip instead of crash like gears, they are cheap and easy to replace gears are some times impossible to find

@chris Nixon I am definitely warming to the idea. I have done a heap of turning now and really happy with the whole machine and the belts are a standard off the shelf Gates. These belts looked really small and flimsy but no signs of deterioration yet Definitely see your point regarding the gears thanks for watching 😊

Very interesting use of the saw stand on the crate. I'm sure some machinists are losing their minds over it but seems like a very practical salutation to me!

@Robert Craft funny you mention it I have had a few say it won’t work and would get vibration however I have been turning 130mm diameter Aluminum and thread cutting chromoly and works perfectly. I would definitely recommend it for a solution under $100 even holds the weight perfectly on slippery tiles …really happy with it 👍

@@michaelhille261 I have always belived that as long as the rigidity of the tool and the machine is in sync what it is mounted on isn't terribly important so long as it is not being moved or jarred in such a way that it would cause the tool to be moved from it's mounting components while in operation

I have a DeWalt miter saw stand like this not really doing anything else and had considered re-purposing it for a 7x14 mini lathe. Came across this video and heck - I'll reuse the crate bottom too. I'll check its weight rating before mounting the 80lb mini lathe on it.

@@ChristopherJones16 I bought the vevor 8x16 luxury version for $1,250. After contact angler bearings, QCTP, and cast iron tail stock upgrades and some other fine tuning. I'm still needing or wanting to do more tweeking. I really with I would have just purchased the 11x30 precision matthews lathe. I can do precision turning within .002 over 8 inch parts but it requires leveling and tuning the machine each and every time. I wanting to add lead to the bed to add more weight mass. I just wish I would have listen to others and went straight to the precision matthews machine.

I'm not sure if they originate out of the same Chinese factory, but these MX-210 models do seem to be a better purchase than those typical Sieg C3 7x14 models with only a 550w motor. They usually come in at around $800+ here in the US. Main thing is always do a complete tear-down and wipe off that gritty shipping grease that all of these Asian imports seem to have on them, and I believe the same upgrades from Little Machine Shop will also work fine on them.

Thanks for watching Oscar the main reason I got this was due to the fact that these little lathes seem to hold their value so to buy one second hand was almost as much as new and this came with free delivery so it was mainly ease of buying and getting delivered. Yes, that was danged impressive to me as well. Now an oil spill, etc... on concrete sucks, so I wonder how that works with tile? One worry would be a hot chip falling on the tile and melted tile while the concrete would laugh at it.

You know I’m quite impressed with the tiles I thought I would chip them and damaged them but surprisingly I’ve dropped hammers and steel bar on the floor and it hasn’t marked at all. I also weld grind spilt paint and all sorts on it. I’m told they are special garage tiles that have the same colour all the way through if you do in fact chip them. Oil just wipes straight off. @jcmw I’m not sure but if they are the same brand or look the same chances are they could be from the same manufacturer. The quality of this one I was quite impressed with .

This link to the seller of the lathe does not list the lathe you demonstrated on KZfaq. I have searched the internet and cannot find a listing for wm220v lathe. Any additional information you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks

Lathe shows a different tail stock and bed width appears to be wider than the lathe seller lists.
