In this video I am visiting Mission HiFi HQ to meet Peter Comeau who is Director of Acoustics and the designer of the new Mission 770 Speakers. The original 770 was released 1979 and was Missions most popular speaker of its day. I wanted to know more about the new 770 and how much of the originals sound remains but also how much has been improved and modernised

The older I get, the more I'm interested in finding myself a very simple 2.0 system I can sit down in front of and just enjoy my music. Finding an engineer that loves what they've done with their design like this is exactly what I'm looking for and would love to have as character in my system. Thank you very much for this video! Like others have said, I really wish there were more videos like this regarding specific audio equipment like this to help decide.

I appreciate the time and effort you and Mr. Comeau took to explain the engineering details and upgrades in these speakers. I really wish more channels dedicated to hi-fi would put the same effort in analysing a new product. It help the prospective buyer to understand why real hi-fi is more costly than the cheap imitations made by some other companies. Also, Mr. Comeau is very generous with technical details other brands try to keep secret (sometimes there is no secrets, just BS and salesmen mumbo-jumbo). Thanks to both of you and hope to hear from you soon!

I can't personally budget for these but recently purchased a pair of Mission QX2 Mk 2 to replace a decade old pair of Monitor Audio Bronze that came with my Marantz PM6005 amplifier. Really pleased ,such a wide soundstage with good depth. Not as forward sounding as many speakers around the price so less fatiguing. Soft but low rolled off bass( ,so not for heavy rock fans) with lots of treble micro detail 👍 🙂

Great interview, thank you. I have a feeling I would love these speakers. Really good to see the quality of the crossovers. My only issue is with the lack of bi-wire terminals, however, that’s easily fixed with an extra pair from somewhere like ETI Research 😀. So pleased to see them made in the UK too, although it obviously affects the price, it has to be worth supporting our manufacturers.

Excellent thanks a lot. The only thing I would have loved to hear about is the internal damping of standing waves, as seen from pr material from Mission a lot has been invested in damping standing waves. Personally I believe there are two reasons mini speakers are so popular among audiophiles, the first of these are the fact that standing waves inside the cabinet are in a frequency region where they can be easily damped by lossy damping material. So I would have liked to hear a bit about the seemingly advanced interior damping of the 770’s.

Holly cow, now that's a real crossover, Danny will not be offering an upgrade kit for these. I think I may just be able to rid myself of my LS3/5a's. The price is very fair when compared to many of the famous British monitors, ever seen the inside of a Harbeth or Spendor? And two big thumbs up for not building them in the PRC, the enemy of the free world. Beautiful British construction just warms my heart, much success!

I have always revered the british loudspeaker sound since i started venturing into hifi in the 70s. To me they are just more musically & emotionally involving. And elusive elements like toe tapping & head nodding is what makes listening to music so enjoyable. To this day, i still find that ONLY british speakers can invoke this sort of reaction in me when i listen to my favourite music. Its certainly refreshing to see the reissued Mission 770s. I can listen to british speaker designers like Peter Comeau, Alan Shaw, Derek hughes etc talk all day & all night long about speaker design & what makes them so musical!

It is expansive because it is made in UK with high cost labour. Period! I have a few polycone speaker KEF and Spendor that the speaker cone warped after some years. If you live in a hot climate country this is not the speaker for you. Once the woofer warped it has no more value. I trust the Wharfedale Linton is better, with easy on the wallet, great built quality and kevlar speaker that don't deformed due to heat. It is a good buy.

The mission 770 seems to be the Fiat 500 for speakers :) But not when it comes to the price :( The woofer has a full copper cap to reduce the eddy currents, just like the Philips AD9710 full range driver of the 60's. And that driver is referred to as the poor mans Lowther, so yes very good but by now nearly 70 year old technology... It sounds a bit snarky but is not intended to be mean spirited. All in all I really like this speaker by the looks of it, it is just that corporate speak tends to ruffle my feathers. Great video, keep them coming!!
@PursuitPerfectSystem

Its important to remeber Peter is not trying to invent the wheel with this speaker he is trying to mimic the best bits of a 70s speaker and bring the best bits of modern speakers without losing the character of the original. So its not always about the most advanced technologies its about using what is going to work for the desired goal

I have listened to both the new and the old 770's and the new ones sound excellent as the old ones did, better in fact, however I cannot justify the £3,299.00 price tag. It seems Mission like many other companies nowadays deliberately inflate the price tag to make people think they are buying something exceptional and they like like to boast to others about how much they paid for certain things. I would imagine there is a high mark up in the price from the retailers too. Personally I will stick with Q Acoustics that are far better value for money.

To really hear what the new 770 can do they need to be playing off a very good system, exceptionally good and then you would hear where they easily justify their price against other new similar ish speakers available today. You have to judge them against new speakers today to ascertain their true value

@@kevinnewell7880 defo disagree I listen to high end speakers all the time. There has to be profit in products otherwise they won’t exist. I know how expensive it is to have things made in the UK. If you compare the 770 to its main competitors from Spendor and Harbeth they cost less. If they sound like the original 770 that is by design in the mid range but they have modern capabilities at the extreme ends that makes all the difference for a versatile all round speaker. You wont know what they can do bass wise without the right gear. You wont know what they can do sound stage wise without the right gear. I have been using them for the last year comparing them much more expensive speakers so have a very good handle on them now

@@PursuitPerfectSystem The Hi Fi retailers in the UK put a 100% mark up on just about everything they sell, the speakers probably cost Mission around 25% of the price they are sold to the consumers, they cost in store for £3,495.00 they most likely cost Mission around £1,200.00 to produce.

@@kevinnewell7880 it doesn’t work like that prices are set by the manufacturers and they have to allow for dealers and or distributors to make enough to have a business and fulfil their duties. This is true for every industry all over the world for everything you buy pretty much. No one forces anyone to buy anything but value can only really be judged by a products position within the market compare to its peers and the Mission offers at least as much if not more than its peers for the same or less money.

They are going to be too expensive for what they are. You could buy the new khl model 3 for less money if you like the retro look or spend slightly more money and buy a modern dynaudio contour 20i with much better performance. Made in UK is a gimmick for just to inflate the prices

I do not think these speakers are going to be sellers. Mission is a brand that has a certain image: good speakers for an affordable price. GBP 3.300,00 is simply a pricetag where people are going to look elsewhere for their speakers. Like Wharfedale the Mission brand should stick with their heritage/image. (think ,as an example, of Jamo ) This naturally does NOT mean that the mission cannot be a superb speaker.

To be fair they have sold quite a few already and thats without people hearing them, I have started listening to them today and they are going to push me as an audiophile to hear the best of them. These are going to surprise a few people because normally the British BBC type sound comes with some caveats and I think Mission have tried to do away with these limitations and tweeter is sensationally good.
