In this video I am reviewing the new Mission 700 HiFi speakers that are intended to look just like the originals from back in the 1970s and 1980s but they are newly engineered from the ground up to be modern in terms of performance but with some of the best sonic character of the originals. Its a great blend that I think works really well as the Mission are immensely enjoyable speakers to listen to.

As you touched on it ever so briefly, the inverted driver placement can defiantly effect the openness in the top end. If you go back to the days of the original JBL 4311's inverted layout which was designed to hang above the window in the studio thus putting the tweeter / midrange more in line with the engineers ear. A common trick at the time when using them at home was to invert them on the stands which really did improve all aspects of the sound. If you look at the 4312 series which was the same speaker but inverted as a normal design. JBL did this in response to the studios moving on & the market share moving towards home use. I can only recall the Trennor & Frieda ART being the exception to my experience, then again I never heard the ART inverted, I can only wonder. Thanks for your most thorough review, as always.

Excellent review and great to see comparisons with competing brands in similar class. From your comments it seems that the mission 700's have been skillfully voiced along with the retro and rather stunning looks let alone very competitive pricing will no doubt be a real winner for Mission. I trust they have big stock levels as for many they will be a must have...

Great review thank you also, as you say pretty much one third the price of the 770s the 700s are, really worth a long hard look/listen. Sound aside I personally like the look of the 700 over the 770 though that's a personal thing, again cheers.

A very thorough review as always, Terry. I was so excited when the new 770’s came out, but that was dampened by the fact that they were way above my pay grade. So, these 700’s are much more intriguing. Would like to see a head-to-head with the Linton’s as they are both retro-inspired speakers at a fairly similar price point and from the same designer to boot.

They are quite different thou, The 700 is so much more in your face than the Linton's which got a much more lean back sound

I just love the Mission speaker sound. I have a pair of 700s in black after my daft dad gave my original 700 pair to a charity shop. Needless to say he walked back past the charity shop window five minutes later and they were already gone.

Hi Terry, thanks for the reivew. They certainly seem worth demo I'm quite suprised you didn't compare these to the WD Linton's. On that note, which one of the two would you choose betwen the 700's and the Linton's? Hope we can some nice sound Demo's of these new Mission soon ;)

Both the Mission 700 and the Wharfdale Lintons appeal to me as modernised retro looking designed speakers. Any chance if a comparison? Your description is very helpful.

Thank you for a very detailed and interesting review of this acoustics. I really like their design and especially the design of the Mission 770. But the Mission 770 is now expensive for me )) Because I recently bought a Hegel h190 and it jacked up my budget a little))) So I think that the Mission 700 will be a good choice for me now. Do you think they will sound good with the Hegel h190? Thanks

I just had a look at the bottom of my immaculate 770's ( missing the grill cloth) that I picked up at Value Village in Toronto for $40. Serial Number 010337(in red fine point marker). Love them.

I think many people are still wondering why there is a large difference in price between the 770 and 700 speakers. Perhaps you could have mentioned that the Mission 770 speakers are Made/Assembled in the U.K. while the 700 speakers are Made in China. This helps explain, in part, the difference in cost. The 770 appears to be better value as it comes somewhat close to the performance of the Mission 700 at less than half of the price. Thanks for the review!

I rarely mention when something is made, I normally just show the labels which have to say it by law I think. I showed the labels in the first minute of the video not for that reason but it did show it

Providing QC is in place, then it really does not matter these days if the speakers are assembled in China. Its still the same company with the same R&D and engineerig team. it just means that manufacturing and distribution is more cost effictive for the company. This is one of the reaosns why we're able to get such good quiality speakers these days for very reaosnable prices.

It is an acquired taste but those Missions are the nicest looking speakers on the market at this time in my opinion. The 770 brings it also in the financial range of the many more people. I can see this speaker becoming a great hit.

Only five and a half mins in, but I have to say - Extremely smart marketing move on Mission's part, what with the resurrection of the 770, and now a more affordable sibling. I don't know how Mission has been doing of late, as they've been off my radar, but this is a good move for the company. As a long-time audio nut, I'm sure of that.

Perhaps if you apply sticky-backed sorbothane strips inconspicuously to the backside of the speaker stand bars, you can eliminate the resonance of the steel frame.

I was thinking more about doing something on the inside as per normal stands, I didnt even think about it right until the end when I was putting the video review together and I started to do comparisons of things to see whats what. I just took it for granted as the 770 stands dont ring. Not the end of the world situation, far from it

The stands will not ring if you loosen the screws a little bit. Just don't tighten them all the way and they will sound just like 770 stands when you knock on them.

When I bi-amplified my speakers I was surprised at the improvement in sound quality. Seems a pity that the Missions don't have the facility for bi-amplification. Maybe Mission could consider including this facility in future production runs.

I don’t think those dimensions are right .. 485 mm is around 19 inches or so, so that can’t be right. I’m guessing the speakers themselves are that tall, so how tall are the stands? 🤔👨🏻

Sorry I totally mis read your initial comment / question the height of the overall speakers on the stands is 990mm and the height to the tweeter is 730mm give or take depending on how raised the spikes are of course

The frequency bump around 4 kHz might be because the speakers don't have enough hours on them.

I dont think so, its just how they are they track more linear / present in the upper vocal region compared to the 700 so they sound a bit more direct which is not a bad thing I noticed.

To stop the ringing of the stands you only need to fill them with vinyl.

The last components I bought were over 20 years ago, before wife and kids :), I do miss going and listening to new stuff at the local HiFi shop. My HiFi has also beed relegated to the corner of the room and is currently disconected ;(

Maybe the Evo 4.3 & 4.4 would give the 700's more competition on sound quality. The 4.2's seemed to do pretty well in comparison to the 700's and the two floorstanders in the Evo range are in similar price structures. Of course you need to have them on hand to compare. The Evos score more for me as I don't like the 700's looks and I did have an original pair of 770's in the past which I didn't like too much!

Great review as always Terry. Sorry but the driver proportions of the new 700 just look wrong in comparison to the originals ( bass driver way to small😂). Good to see they have screen printed the logo on the front as the original 700 was really cheap looking clear plastic label. I know we’re now over forty years on from the original 700 and 770 but we’re looking at ten times the price ( from memory the 770 was introduced at £365 and the 700 at £119, that to an old fart like me us a massive increase in price although I appreciate the effect forty years of inflation has had! I guess I’ll stick with the three pairs of the originals I have until a lotto win appears🤣

Its not just inflation that effects the price, inflation would only be the determining factor if the product was identical to the original, its not its all new

Don't forget, if these were made in the UK and not in China, the price difference with the 770 wouldn't be that huge.

You had me till you said "crisper" I really like the 770 but, they are as "crisp" as I ever want to go. Makes my ears hurt even saying that word.

if the 770 sound overly crisp they are showing you that aspect of the hifi system, its not the speakers

yeah the 700 are a little more linear in their treble presence region which makes them a little more upfront sounding, but again they shouldn't be too crispy with the right gear.
