The new brushes take 20-30 washes to go silent. It's normal. Good work.

That is the dream. I had a lovely bit of channel iron a while back that I scrapped. Waiting on some more.

@@bootsowen i had the choice between a chinese press for £100 or a 6m length of channel, also £100. I already had a jack to use and a pair of trampoline springs (fly tipped) for the return. Works well but using channel doesnt allow you to pass material between the uprights (useful for a pipe/bar/box radius bending attachment)

i reckon that rough noise at the end is because you put new brushes in. once they're bedded in it should be fine

Fantastic pair of videos Owen! Reminds me of the time I replaced the bronze bushing bearing on a tumble dryer. The dryer shaft had worn through the bronze and was working it's way through the sheet metal at the back towards the motor.

I did one of those bronze tumble dryer bushes a good while ago. It is one of the few times where I suspect a drop of oil each year would probably save them. I think on the one I did you could do the whole job with a screwdriver and pliers.

I really enjoyed this video and once again you've made the devil's job look like child's play! I wonder if the motor is noisy because either one or more of the brushes is facing the wrong way - something I highly doubt, as you've dabbled with motors before, so know how to install motor brushes so they are facing in the right direction. Maybe try swapping the brushes around, as they might not take too well being on the other side. When I had new brushes put in my Bosch Logixx 8, some years ago now, the interference from the sparking of the new brushes played hell with the machine's electrics and it did weird stuff - personally, I suspect the motor wasn't earthed properly. Once the brushes had bedded in, all was good and it was like new again.

The final noise from the engine comes from the brushes, it is possible that they broke in the middle, it would be good to replace them. And one more thing when changing the brushes, it is necessary to clean the commutator well with fine sandpaper 2000 gradation

would like to attempt this one day aswell, if the motor bearings sound a bit rough i just carefully pop the cover off and put grease in it which i suppose is ok but better to put new bearings on if you can like you have done. good job!

How or what do you use to get the cover off. I always seem to bend them.

a very tiny flat headed screw driver, i just work it around gradually until it pops off. not the best method but it seems to work!

6:55 If that plastic wrap gets scratched/torn, will there be any effect on the motor? Sorry if my question is silly, but could you even take that plastic wrap off completely or could you find a replacement for it , if needed?

The little cover that goes over the motor can be forgotten. I have in the past. But it must be there for a reason. I always thought it was there in case of a leak. But it might be for airflow around the motor. Or to direct dust off the carbon brushes.

@@bootsowen Yes what had crossed my mind was that it could work as some kind of insulation just in case any blown away dust or particle should make any improper contact. Thank you for your quick response.

Never seen the 1401 in service Bootsy, what's the deal there? - Was she a spares machine?

I can’t remember where it came from but a friend gave me his old 1401 for spares and then I had 2. Used one for a while and then gave it to another friend until these bearings got too noisy for him.

Dry ice, or liquid nitrogen if you can get it is cheaper. A lazy man would just pop a nail in a can of refrigerant, r12 in the day.
