Triumph Motorcycles recently sent me an online survey on potential new technology they are considering adding to their motorcycles. Some of it I think is cool and some I have questions about. I also have concerns about the possible way they may want you to pay for these new features.

I take pride in working on my own motorcycle. Some of those features sound good but what if it breaks? The cost of repair would be insane after warranty expires.

If I want the feature, I want it all the time and willing to pay for it once. If you have to "pay as you go," the vendor can change the prices. If more people want the feature, they can then raise the price each month (much like traffic based toll fees). I am upset enough that the manufacturers are making it harder and harder to get the manuals for us to do our own service. Keep up the good work.

The answer to your question is a resounding no. No to auto blippers, quick shifters, radar, cornering this that and the other, rider modes etc. etc. They all cost more money, cost of repairs, more to go wrong, more weight. For me less is more.

Hello Craig, as a "younger" guy (early 30s). I can confirm that we don't want subscriptions or nickel and dimeing either. For most of the younger generation that I know personally, the idea of continously paying for something we would rather own is a myth probably by marketing departments to make it "trendy". To give an example, a lot of streaming services are on the downturn since they haven't been making good content, and for people my age who are renting, I don't know a single person that doesn't want to own a house and they are continously saving for one when the market shifts. Just wanted to provide a different perspective and ride safe my friend.

Just because we're old doesn't mean we can't keep up with current tech. My bike is a '22 GSXS1000GT+. I have no problems with power modes, TC, ABS, its auto shifter or cruise control. I've learned how they function, how to ride with them and how they apply in a variety of traffic, weather and road conditions. Its dasboard display that connects to my phone via Bluetooth and plugs into the bike's USB port is a plus for navigation. Using it all doesn't mean that I don't know how to ride a motorcycle, it doesn't mean that I don't have 50 years of accumulated riding skills, it means that I've incorporated the latest in technology into my riding experience. It also is a reflection of my state of mind to life in general, just because I'm old doesn't mean that I have to be stuck in the past and can't continue to be enthusiastic about the present and the future and adapt to it.

I am much the same way. As a long-time BMW owner, I will no buy another now that they have dropped the sales of service manuals to owners. As far as I know, BMW doesn’t offer a subscription for their manuals. I am not opposed to a subscription, but $100/year is outrageous. I’ve owned my K1200LT forever 17 years. I paid about $100 for the service CD when I bought the bike new. $100/year would have added up to $1,700 by now which is nuts. Better to just buy another brand of bike. At some point they will all do this nonsense, but I will have aged out by then.

G’day bloke, I say no way Jose, for me I have recently sold a beautiful Harley Davidson ultra classic after 10 years of ownership. I now have a couple of new Moto Guzzi v7 specials & Royal Enfield 120 anniversary interceptor & G.T. Continental, also a RE Tribute 500. I’ve been riding close to 50 years & am finding the simplicity of these bikes are a major reason for buying them. The Harley was fantastic, however I don’t need any of the gadgets even on that bike. Back to basics, pure, simple, some would say just like me🙄🤣😁. As for ongoing dollars out of my pocket for the privilege, they can shove that where the sunshine doesn’t exist. Shiny side up, Hooroo from down unda 😁

Chain oiler and adaptive cruise control for highways are a good thing to avoid annoying hassles. Also, I love the DCT on my Rebel 1100 (but this obviously is a very polarizing subject). In my opinion, the rest is too much unnecessary car stuff, while riding a motorcycle is more like the opposite of riding a car (e.g. you absolutely need to be attentive and aware all the time). Subscriptions are 100% no-go.

1 chain oiler : big nono ( too dangerous if it's leaking, chain can last long time even you don't do anything, but if you want extend you chain life, do it in your garage. 2 ACC: they have to do it, no choice for them 3 auto adjust headlight, I spoke with another band about it 5 years ago and will be on market soon. 4 software update:(must free of charge)are important for safety and reliability, I will also suggest add Customized buttons feature 5 real face camera: must have 4k ,not only for look what behind you, it's for dash cam function(record accidents if the car driver hit and run)and trip record if you ride with others 6 flash rear warning lights: ok to have it but more importantly the engine brake light should be there as well. 7 suspension lowering: I will have it if they offered me life time warranty on it 8 heads-up displays: let helmet company deal with it 9 sing recognition: useless 10 auto transmission: nice to have that as a option, I know they are improving low speed control and void long distance follow sleep problem. The end : I want all things list above on my next bike ,but I don't want pay more than $500cad for them 😅

Some things are useful such is the ABS (better with the Cornering), the Traction Control, for long straight ride the Cruise Control. Will be useful light up the rear light during an Engine Break, this should be possible, since exist an accessory to put behind your helmet that automatically light up during deceleration. Or just make an accessory to put on the back of the moto instead over the helmet. Maybe adding a warning over the dashboard when a vehicle is on your blind spot, adding an horn behind the moto, to wake-up car rider from their smartphone before rear-ended you, plus the possibility to look (and record even on an SD) in front and behind even inside the dashboard, but without removing the mirrors. Plus remember to put on a dashboard even how much fuel remain, something that isn't always available.

Being a mid-sixties curmudgeon, my first bikes in the 70's didn't have a fuel gage. My current 2021 Indian Roadmaster has way more tech than I know or care to use, to your point, if manufactures have the ability to add or delete these options with key strokes of a laptop maybe they should offer them ala cart at point of purchase include the subscription price in the sales price for 3,4,5 years. However my over all opinion is as with everything else, to much of a good thing is a detriment.

I'm not against technology--to a certain point. I own a Tiger 900 and Harley Sportster, two bikes on the opposite end of the technology spectrum. I don't use half the tech stuff on my Tiger, and sometimes I worry that all those gizmos will fail at some point. I'm already miffed at Triumph for having to take my bike to the dealer to reset that stupid service light when I do my own servicing. My Tiger is a joy to ride, but if I'd known about the service light, I wouldn't have bought it. It aggravates me so much that I'm thinking of selling it. The Sportster is raw, simple and easy to work on, the way motorcycles used to be. Every time I ride it, I realize why I got into motorcycling. I had heard that Triumph was thinking about going the way of KTM, charging subscriptions to unlock certain features. There is no way in heck I'm going to pay a subscription fee to unlock options on a motorcycle. Ride safe.

Hi Craig, hope you're well. I'm with you on this and not only because I'm about your age. Buy the bike, pay for it and be done. Get on with the riding. Was it Nissan who brought out their electric Leaf car, then demanded the owner rent the batteries? Absurd. I'm not a big fan of automatic updates either, as they usually don't give you an opt-out option. Does anyone know what their laptop auto updates are actually doing? Great way to snoop if you ask me. My preference is to stick to switchable safety-enhancing features but I'll have a vintage bike any day without all that wiring. Great video. Thanks for sharing. Ride safe and keep up the good work. 👍✌

My only true experience with modern tech is a drive by wire throttle on my Indian road master. After owning it for about a year the throttle sensor would get stuck at a certain position even though I’m still twisting the throttle then it would become unstuck and the bike would accelerate hard. The issue wasn’t consistent but did take the bike in twice to the dealer. They never could figure it out.

I have a 22 Speedmaster and got the survey also. Big NO to subscriptions. Modern "o" ring sealed chains don't need oiling, plus I don't want excess oil slinging on my tire and bike. Over the air is nice for updates until "big brother" gets involved and wants to shut your bike down. I think Triumph needs to put more effort into making accessories plentiful and available at a reasonable cost than new "gadgets" to increase the cost of their bikes. I had a heck of a time getting accessories when I bought my bike.

Enjoyed your video and many others too. I'll add a couple of items to the list. First is infrared detection and warning. Deer are a hugh problem in the south for cars and especially motorcycles. That's the main reason I don't ride at night. The second, although not necessarly a technology item, is adjustable seat, handle bars, foot pegs, etc. We have all those on cars/trucks, why not motorcyles? I absolutely hate having to buy a bike and then immediately start modifying everything. PS, I too am an older rider and looking to downsize from a Goldwing to an adventure bike.

Heads up displays are tricky to get right and often result in glare. The tech on my 1250GS is about as far as I want to go with electronics on a bike. It's enough and borderline too much, my vote puts the money into chassis, brake, and suspension innovation. Tech is fun until it creates reliability issues.
@Alt-Four

I don't think the auto oilers will be useful, they just cause a mess and modern chains are sealed anyways. I like the headlight features and blinking the break light when the break is applied but shouldn't be used to 'yell' at other drivers. I love the cruse control features and with cameras watching road sighs the cruse control can auto adjust to the speed limit. I'm meh on the suspension lowing. I love the HOD idea, I find myself looking down a lot to check my speed. The transmission are nice. I'm 100% against subscriptions; a lot of people only ride half the year and with activation and termination costs we would just be paying for features not being used setting in the garage. Way to many companies are adding the subscription option for things you used to get for free, you want you seats to adjust, windows to open, airbags to deploy, there's a subscription for that. My bike has a subscription for it's navigation system, I didn't pay for it and threw on a Garmin.

A traffic sign recognition system is for those who don't look on the road in the first place. That also means that said person is a rider who doesn't really pay attention to the displayed rules and dangers. So in the end, said person would ignore the HUD as well. Also I can tell you, as a Gen Z person myself, that the bombardment with subscription services in todays world seems like a lazy money grab from companies, so we have to hope that other members of the younger generation is with you on that one. Also great video, I have to say. It is quite interesting to see what happens on the motorcycle market.

I just bought a new Moto Guzzi V100S and It does have some new technology and I’m just getting back into motorcycle riding after a 10 year hiatus. I’m going to need to read the owner’s manual. I welcome some technologies, but I’m still going to be using my rear view mirrors. I’m having front and rear cameras (VIOFO MT1) installed and I have a 7 year warranty. I’ll have the semi active Ohlins suspension, quick shifter, heated grips and seat. I paid $22,000 and I’m done with it. I don’t want to pay for any subscriptions for my motorcycle!

Took the very same survey and ticked no to most of it. The arms race that is add more and more tech to bikes in the hope it lures in new buyers has reached saturation point, they're adding new unnecessary tech just for the sake of it now. As for subscription charges for features already fitted to a bike you have paid for so you can use it, well, that bike will not be coming home with me.

The majority of "under warranty" issues that new automobiles have to to with the technologies you mentioned. If an LED tail lamp gets broken in a collision it can be a $1,000 ( due to blind spot monitors built in ). When back up camera systems fail on a 10 y.o. vehicle average repair is $800. Power folding side mirrors $1,200 part. New full size Bronco has a system that electronically disconnects sway bar links for better rock crawling. Failed part was $3,000 ( and the vehicle could not exceed 25mph after it failed ). There are no "stripped-base model" vehicles anymore $80k to $100k f150/broncos are the new normal. Yeah-no thanks.

Extras at point of sale is fair enough but subscriptions, nah. Regarding adaptive cruise it'd have to be better than on my Honda (car) which braked for me when overtaking an articulated truck and once when a ball bounced into the road in front of me, on a bike I reckon I'd have been off! Sign recognition not reliable either.

The most advanced technology on my Triumph is a 30 year old Boyer ignition system, the rest of it is 70s engineering (which hadn't changed much since the 50s), but I can service and fix my bike in my shed, using basic tools. The idea of radar assisted cruise control opens up a whole load of opportunities for disaster. What if you are tipping into a bend and the system detects a roadside object, decides it is in your path and applies the brakes when you're not expecting it? More automation means less control. Fortunately, none of this stuff affects me, as I've no intention of buying any more bikes. My 1978 Triumph T140V and 1980 Suzuki GS550L do everything I want from a bike (and at very little cost).

I don't understand how a flashing tail light would annoy a tailgater any worse that your chosen solution of just slowing down so they go around you. If they're so impatient that they're breathing down your neck already, going even slower than the rest of traffic is more likely to cause them to lose it, IMHO. Re: - Heads-up display. Every one I've seen is located below your line of sight, and not an imposition on your view of traffic and the road. Like with everything else, you will get used to it and it will be a non-issue, and you will begin to appreciate how you don't have to look down and away from traffic to check that info... Auto trans, especially DCT's can be made to be more efficient. They're less tiring in city traffic. Yes, I agree pushing these options on the buyer is likely to raise the costs. There could be some economy of scale, and some of their upgrades are inherently modest in cost, as they're pure electronic add-ons. I also disagree with subscriptions. Making the add-ons optional with up-front costs, are preferred to subscriptions.

You can use more of the battery or get a reverse if you upgrade one of the latest models. I pay a subsciption of £30/year for my tracker. That covers the cost of mobile network data. Well done for 'opening up this can of worms'. "Tech I don't want..." How often do we hear riders say that now? I bought a new bike recently, and I say it myself! I don't want rider modes, intrusive traction control, or ABS, I just want the bike to stay the same, so I can learn to ride it without it changing. But were not allowed to have that now, at any price. Front blinkers that stay on all the time, confusing other road users in the name of 'safety', self-cancelling blinkers that either don't cancel, or cancel before you get to the corner, etc. This technology the manufacturers are hooked on isn't that clever! But we no longer have the choice of the bike without all this electronic bollocks. And what will be the thing that fails on the new bike? Yep - all this nonsense we didn't want in the first place. My so-clever TFT has already lost its mind once, and I've only had the bike four months. All a little too close to Devo's song about 'Freedom of Choice' (which then turns into "freedom FROM choice") for my liking! But this 'subscription model'? Oh please. We bought the bike, and now they want to milk us year on year, without having to do anything else, like an insurance company? I don't think so. No access to the bike's manual when you need it? We bought the bike at full retail, and now you aren't going to allow us to work on it, after 50+ years of working on motorcycles? It's getting like the need for 'security' on your computer. Next thing we'll have to get security for the TV, and every vehicle we own, as they will be prone to getting 'hacked'. I can't wait. Like KTM selling you the bike, with a whole lot of 'features', which they then switch off remotely after 1500 kms. Just when you were getting used to them, they make you come in and pay extra, for someone in Mattighoffen to click a computer, and remotely f*ck with your bike. And charge you a bag of money for the privilege of them 'unlocking' features which are already on the bike. A lot of resentment over that insult. I guess we're getting closer to the time when the police can plug into your bike at the roadside, and read where you've been, and what speed you were doing. Yes I'm an old curmudgeon, after 61 years of riding motorcycles too far, and too fast, but surely all this nonsense is exactly what we got into motorcycles to avoid? I know I did. We didn't want to queue up in a hatchback with all the other hatchbacks, we wanted to be different to all that. I might end up back on an old air-cooled two-valver at this rate... ☹ And another Hi from Australia. 🙂

Some of the features sound quite e.g. automatic ride height adjustment. Others are a maybe e.g. rear view video cameras. I would have to see them in operation. The flashing lights if someone gets too close, sounds terrible. I don't want my bike automatically brake checking people. I am totally opposed to subscription services. I don't want to give anyone ongoing access to my bank or credit card. I won't buy anything that can be price hiked later on, or even discontinued on a whim. I won't buy any bike with subscription services. I would go elsewhere, even if the opposition bike isn't as good. Triumph will get a lot of buyer hate if they try implementing this sort of thing.

A lot of tech features address poor bike design. Suspension lowering for example. It is hard work to design bikes that are both comfortable (leg room) yet low enough to the ground. Much easier to design suspension that collapses at low speed. But I can totally see the pumps and servos failing at some point. Why not do the hard work and design a bike with correct seat height/comfort? BMW has developed a suspension system that raises the bike when it detects you want to deploy the centerstand, thereby easing the lift. Why not just design a center stand with a better lifting cam? Better mirrors would mitigate the need for a rear view camera. The camera is a lazy solution. Tech for its own sake. I say: do the heavy lifting of excellent design, and only use tech as a solution to problems that require it.

I draw the line at things that are actually useful like ABS, rider modes, semi active suspension and electronic preloads which actually enhances riding experience. Cameras and crap I can do without.

I'd never consider a bike like this or a company that forces them upon you.

Maybe we should let AI drive the bike for us too and we’ll all just become mindless pillions. Well, maybe not.

KTM started the subscription plan so I did not buy it. I'd rather get an older bike than be nickel and dimed till I sell it. I'd pay to upgrade the cruise control and ride height adjustment but a 1 time fee.

I won't buy a bike without a carburetor. I consider fuel pumps excessive tech. That should answer your question.

My opinion is many motorcycles have become extremely tech heavy. Too much tech! What happened to the operator's responsibility? At some point you are just a body sitting on a machine. And of course, let's not forget big brother getting their foot further in the door. Got to love subscription services, fees!!!

Screw another bunch of subscriptions. Just no. Adaptive cc would be pretty nice though.

My opinion...Being 71 I'm tired of all the tech Bull S@#&#,It's way harder to learn all the new crap and it's making everything way too expensive. My last bike was a 2018 and used it cost me over $27,000.00 Don't need more tech. And I certainly WILL NOT pay monthly for anything. Some cars want payments to use your cell to do things on the car....NOPE NOT ME My opinion Thanks for the videos

I wouldn't pay for the subscriptions, seems everyone has their hand out wanting money for something. Unless I feel I really need it for safety or comfort, I ain't buying.

As far as I'm concerned the new bikes have way too much auto everything. I'm 74 years old. Never owned a new bike or one with EFI or ABS. Thinking about upgrading to EFI hoping it will survive parking for 8 or 9 months then start up and run well. One thing that really ticked me off is that Triumph no longer sells service manuals. Subscription only. Doesn't look like I'll ever get a new bike. You killed me with the $25,000 Tiger. My budget is $2,000 to $3,000

The more driver “aids” that are added, the less skilled the driver/rider becomes. Pretty soon you’re not paying attention, just depending on the electronics. Radar cruise would be nice for riding with a small group BUT the fact that it aggressively brakes automatically when someone passing comes into your lane without leaving the following distance your radar cruise is set to. THIS IS DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS. No to auto updates on the fly. Regular cruise and Abs , with rain mode traction control is all i want Bikes are becoming far to complicated and can get riders in over their head when bike makes them think they are better riders than they actually are. Im good with rider adjustable ABS.and tha

In my opinion, all this "technology" is a bit much. I'm only 56 but I prefer a more raw riding experience, especially when it comes to an off-pavement machine. Then there is the reliability and cost factors that go along with technology. As for subscriptions ..... these motorcycle manufacturers can kiss my a$$....

Do I want it? No, not really. I would much, much rather manufacturers of all vehicles to focus on reliability over tech packages. There's so much bullcrap in cars these days which a growing number of people are taking for granted, and letting the cars think for them. That's a bad thing, and an insurance adjuster I know constantly gripes about claims which prove it. App-based and software based vehicle tech also means every single one of those vehicles has a severely limited lifespan. Imagine what happens later on when the app for your bike is no longer supported, software updates are no longer done, or worse, the flash memory chip eeks out of tolerance or burns out from too many read-write cycles. Suddenly your bike is a brick. No more updates. Those features you'd been paying for turn themselves off because it can't accept activation anymore; the manufacturer no longer supports it. Too much technology sells us all short, and sells short the future generation from being able to have classic cars and motorcycles from the current era. You can find a 40+ year old vehicle in a barn, and there's a chance you can get it to run again. You can restore it to 100% stock. You can't do that so much with a 25 year old vehicle, if the original ECU is toast. You can't do that with a modern vehicle if the infotainment system goes out of spec. You can fabricate sheet metal panels, but not so easily fiberglass ones, to factory spec. Even worse is the prevalence of plastic. Cars and bikes are becoming ever more disposable and ever more proportionally expensive for no good reason.

To add a few comments. Subscriptions to have the tech....ABSOLUTELY NOT..I would not buy any bike that I had to pay a subscription to keep a feature working. Fancy headlight that changes its beam pattern....No way thanks. ...this would make it stupid expensive if it had to be replaced and not needed. If I need more light there are lots of manufactures out there that make additional lights. Rear flashing lights No thanks. Heads up display....Not needed Sign recognition.. No Radar Cruise...possibly

Technology for the sake of technology is a fool's errand. Most of it is unnecessary and only results in a diminished skillset of the operator.
