In his first NHL season, 1979-80, Gretzky was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player (the first of eight in a row) and tied for the scoring lead with Marcel Dionne with 137 points. MVP of the league trumps rookie of the year!!!

Gretzky had the most points ever of a first year NHL player (137 points in 79 games), but he was ineligible as a rookie because he played one season as a professional (at age 17) in the WHA prior to joining the NHL. He did however win the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP his first season, and remains the only first year NHL player to ever do so. Hilarious he wins the NHL’s biggest award, but not the Calder. Later they changed the rules, and gave Sergei Makarov the Calder at age 30, despite the fact he was a professional on the most famous professional team in the world (The Red Army) for about 10 years lol.

The Calder for various reasons has proven tough for all time legendary top guys to snag. Gretzky, Crosby, McDavid all didn't get it. And the fun part is, it's one that once you don't get it, you can't get it. It stays not got. This is part of why there is a very exclusive club - Hart, Ross, Smythe, Lindsay, Calder, 3+ Cups. Kane and Malkin. That's it. Trottier no Lindsay, Gretzky no Calder, Crosby no Calder, Lemieux only 2 Cups.

@@georgial6398 - true, but in Gretzky’s case he was ineligible, so he couldn’t get it anyway. Gretzky’s the only first year NHL player to have the most points in the NHL his first season. And the only first year player to win the Hart as NHL MVP. Obviously he would have won the Calder if he were eligible.

Pretty crazy Ovechking and Crosby is that high up considering what era they played in.

not really, 2006 had 2 300 goal teams, so high scoring

@@Redditaurus yes their first couple years was a high scoring league. then a couple low/in between years. then the dead puck era which coincides almost exactly w the years where the Blackhawks were good.

@@georgial6398 we're looking at "rookie seasons", so your point is moot. 5 players had 50+ goals, and 7 were with 100+ pts

@@georgial6398 I can't see your reply when I click on the comment in my notifications... It absolutely is. Read the title. Ovi and Crosby STOPPED being rookies after their inaugural season. Your comment is completely IRRELEVANT to the topic at hand. They were rookies in 2005-06, but sophomores in 2006-07. Does this finally make sense?
